  1. Thanks for the clarification. Since I was not 100% sure, should have said that I became aware of SA Company through an ad (maybe just a click through banner with their name on it) which appeared on this site. That ad popped up in front of me on this site. No idea of the financial arrangement or if there was any at all; or do I care. I'm happy that this company's products as well as those of some other companies that show up on this site are something that I purchase and am pleased with. Mainly, I am grateful for all the information obtained from this site that I can say with 100% certainty has led me to catching a lot more bass. Thanks
  2. They used to be a sponsor on this site, not sure if they still are. I bought 5 for about $15 a few years ago. Good value, although the material may be a little thicker and they may be tighter than other brands. Since I'm up north, the thicker material is not a big deal for me, and these get thinner the more you wash them. They do have a wide variety of styles, including pirate, gangster and camo patterns, which the fashion critics will tell you they hate; however, they offer many plain models as well, for those that are not fond of the other styles.
  3. BWhole's response was in jest; not knocking the rod maker, although the length and detail of his response may have made that less than apparent initially.
  4. Too funny - great name change, as well as matching avatar pic - LOL
  5. X2 - This is my favorite rod for kayak fishing - use it for a variety of things, but mainly ned rigging. Also - looking at the chart provided by Brad above; I'm wondering how the 2 piece can possibly weigh less than the 1 piece 6'8" model?
  6. Put a Lake Fork frog trailer hook on a Booyah Jr. Pad crasher and you will be all set. Line problem is not a problem for you any more and your hook ups will increase substantially. I have no affiliation with the aforementioned product, matter of fact, when I ordered these from Cabelas a few years ago; they were back ordered, so I had to wait 2 months to get these. They do work well.
  7. I have a finesse TRD tied on at least one of my rods every time out, and usually use the Zman finesse jig head (I flatten the bait keeper that sticks out on the hook down and use super glue to attach the plastic to the jig head) . I have no issues storing them back in the bag they came in with other Zman plastic. Although the only reason I will take a jig off is to switch to a different weight jig or if the hook is damaged - which rarely happens; also, I crimp the barb down on all hooks. The finesse TRD plastic works better the longer it's used as all the salt gets washed away and the more beat up it gets, the more porous it is. I have caught over a hundred fish on one piece of plastic; which was really beat up but kept catching fish. I will add that I usually make sure the plastic is dry before I put it back in a bag.
  8. I may be mistaken, however, I believe the zero is the SK equivalent of the Zman big TRD. I have fished the big TRD and it is excellent in very shallow water as it has a very slow sink rate when T rigged weightless. The other plus with the Zman material is that is almost indestructible, as it's elastec. The minor downside (easily dealt with by keeping it separate)with this plastic is that you can't mix it with other plastics. One pack of the elastec material will last you more than 10X as long as the plastic used in traditional senko knockoffs so you can buy just one pack of the zeros if you wish to experiment with them and not be out a lot of $$ to see what they can do and have them for other applications. If you don't like them you can always cut them in half and use for the ned rig.
  9. Something approximately 6'6" in length is a good all around choice if you only have one UL. I have a few in that length which are good for use on a kayak as well as on shore with brush near the banks. I have longer ULs to use from piers or in areas where I have room to cast farther from shore. Would recommend around 6'6" or so for your starter rod in UL.
  10. If you are looking in this direction, I would recommend spending an extra $25 to step up to the Diawa Presso. I have an 8', 2pc. that I use and really like. They also sell shorter and longer 2 pc. ultra light set ups. Good luck in your decision.
  11. ^^^This is the key for me. All of Brad's points are excellent, but this one especially. I fish for panfish when the bass aren't hitting and use a 6'6" ultralight that makes casting a lighter jig or spinner (e.g., panther martin) much easier. The ultralight makes catching panfish or small trout much more enjoyable, and also makes accidental hook ups with a bass or northern pike a blast. One other thing to keep in mind; if you are using ultralight gear, it's important that you have a good reel and your drag is set properly, so you will be able to effectively fight and land the fish. Best of luck in your decision Matt, I think that if you eventually decide to go with a UL or light action set up, you will find an application for it and really enjoy it.
  12. I have that same reel; it's a workhorse that I use for top waters and heavier lures. If you can fix it for the price of a small part, then why not? Look on YouTube to see instructions for putting it back together. Maybe not something for your exact reel; however, there should be something similar. Also, look on the Mitchell website for a schematic. I could take mine apart and take a picture for you, however, I'm reluctant based on your bad experience, which I don't want to repeat. If all else fails, consider sending it off to DVT. Good luck, hope you are able to get it back together.
  13. This topic comes up multiple times every year. I use snap swivels to make things easy, since I fish for fun. The key is to use quality snap swivels if you do use them, such as Spro. I also use the smallest possible size that will work on lures. I tie direct to a hook or jig for T rig or Ned rig type applications. Do whatever you want and what works for you and have fun with it.
  14. If you are pairing it up with a BG4000, keep in mind that you are seeking a spinning rod, not a casting rod. The Berkley rods mentioned by Darren above are good for the application you are looking at; or you may even try an Ugly Stik in the length and power that you are looking for, which will hold up to just about anything you will hook into and will not break the bank. Best of luck. PS As far as the mojo bass kayak rods, I believe they are all 7' or longer, which is longer than you want. Personally not a big fan of the SC yak rod idea, as I have regular 6'8" mojo bass spinning which works just fine in my kayak. If SC made the yak rods 6'8" or shorter I might think about it.
  15. I haven't fished these since the first time I tried them, years ago when I was a kid, so I can't really recall anything about them. Just for kicks, I will try them again this spring. I don't think they make/sell these retail any more, so I guess they were probably not very effective and are more collectors items now. I researched on the web and I see that some are for sale, or have been for sale. I just posted these as I thought, hey it's the middle of winter, I'll post a picture to break things up, some may be interested in goofy lures from the past. I recall a post a few weeks ago about inventing a new lure; if we look back, someone has probably already tried a lot of things that you may think to invent today.
  16. Going through my old "stuff" and found some lures I got when I was a kid - a long time ago. I think I used them a couple times with no luck, probably because I didn't know what I was doing, more than anything else. Sort of a Dr. Frankenstein type of attempt by the lure company (Storm) to put 2 types of lures together - crankbait/soft plastic. They came along with a little plastic stick to jam the soft plastic into the slot on the back of the lure; although the soft plastic could be fit in without the stick. just thought I'd take the time to share the pics on a freezing cold day if anyone is interested.
  17. Have one and tried it for the first time this year in the ADKs. Nothing else was working, so why not try it. Shallow lake, fairly windy day; threw it out for the first time and bammo, the biggest fish of my vacation week slammed it. At that point, I was batting 1,000. I proceeded to cast it over 100 more times before catching another one, so I can only conclude that I don't know much, except -like any other lure, it has it's place and time, finding out when that is; is just fishing. It is fun to watch it do it's thing and hope something will smash it.
  18. Use copper pipe insulating foam. Comes in 6' lengths, can be cut easily with a serrated bread knife. Doesn't take much to make your rod & reel float; just 3-4"s. Place above the handle on a spinning rod and in the split of the grip on casting rod. I dumped my kayak once the first year I had it. Taught me some important lessons, mainly wear a PFD at all times, also be aware of conditions - stay off the water if it's too windy - don't take chances; you're out there to have fun and it's no fun fighting waves and wind. Good luck
  19. The Original Storm Thin Fin is very effective. The best color for me is Metallic Silver Blue and the 2.5" size works better than the larger one. These have great action and cost less than $5. This does not have the typical stick bait shape, but don't let that dissuade you, it works. I have caught just about everything trolling this; but it is especially good on brown trout.
  20. Went out yesterday, beautiful day on one of the little NY finger lakes. Had a great day - see my report in the local fishing forum for NY. Hoping to get a few more days like that before the snow flies. I can handle colder temps., it's the wind that makes it hard. As of yesterday, I can attest that the fish are still there and hitting.
  21. Was beautiful yesterday, so went out from from 2 til 5:30, bumbling around in my hybrid canoe. Initially things were slow, caught one in the first hour. Went to the other side of the lake where the wind was coming from and it was much calmer. Caught at least 2 dozen LMB over the course of the next 2 hours and 3 SMB. Most were small, from 1 -2#s and all were super shallow, in 5-10' of water. Took pictures of the biggest LMB & SMB, was unable to get weights as my cheap scale was not working (at least I knew the air temp was 13 Celsius LOL) I estimate they were over 3#. A great day, saw only 2 others out on the lake, one of the guys was coming in from bowhunting from further down the lake.
  22. Very sad to hear about the loss of your father.
  23. Loved looking at this thread and seeing an old post from SirSnookalot;miss his practical, down to earth posts.
  24. Owner Shaky Ultra head is an excellent option - also, comes in green or brown
  25. ^^^^^ Yes I shake my head when I see my neighbors that were complaining a few years ago about Walmart putting the little local vendor out of business, now getting Amazon packages delivered non stop every day. Now they do all they can to avoid doing any shopping locally, where they may interact with other humans; which is o.k, but it would be easier to understand if they weren't such big hypocrites to begin with. I like shopping online as well, Use Walmart.com all the time, there's no prime membership fees and if an item doesn't have free shipping, I get it delivered to the store for free. I enjoy going to Walmart; the one near our house is pretty decent and the people that work there provide excellent service. With all the above said, I'd rather be fishing and looking at nature than looking at what's wandering around at Walmart.
