  1. A net is always helpful. However, you are going to release the fish anyway, so it's always good if you can get it next to the kayak, get a good look at it and it gets off by itself. A win-win for you and the fish. Look at it as a positive.
  2. Got my wife a pair of Chotas for Christmas last year and she really likes them. I just cut off a pair of old hip waders at the knee and wear wool socks with them. Not stylish but they work.
  3. Watermelon Red Magic Baby Bass New to my list this year is Goby - the 4" is working well for me. In the lakes I fish there are no gobies, however, there must be something to the gold tint in this that mimics the bait forage.
  4. Up in the ADKs for our two week stay. Had great luck yesterday at a small lake near Blue Mountain. Caught about 2 dozen in just a few hours. Mostly Smallmouths and less than a foot but good fighters. Caught a few good size largemouths. Using 4 inch goby colored senko weightless on 3/0 EWG hook. The goby color seems to work best for me up here, maybe because it mimics a gold colored fingerling bait fish.
  5. I got the tech spec elite spinning rod several weeks ago when it was on sale for $59 It is a level below the arsenal, however, it is my favorite now. I like it much better than the Veritas I got last year. The elite has 36 ton graphite and micro guides, the arsenal is lighter and has cork. I handled one in the store and it was super light weight. I would highly recommend the tech spec arsenal. Please note I have no affiliation with DSG or Field & Stream. I just visit the stores a lot, mostly to just look around, sometimes I actually buy something when I need it or can't hold myself back.

March 18, 2015 Jacob fromGroveport, OH Age35 - 50 GenderMale Purchase LocationIn-Store I recommend this product. I love all Field & Stream rods. All of them have great value. I bought Tec Spec 7'0" for myself and Inferno for my son last year and both worked very well. This Arsenal rod is not cheap, but considering Fuji parts and super light weight, it is much cheaper than other similar spec rods. This is truly the best rod in the shop!
  7. Please take the time to educate yourself on this, no reason for such ignorance, the case testimony is out there - no need to rely on some biased newscaster to provide your talking points. Not 2 separate things - please read all the case testimony - if the process is not independent and does not allow for an innocent individual to have a fair and impartial hearing then there is a problem as an innocent individual is branded by a bad system as guilty before any investigation starts. This system works in North Korea, thank god we are in the USA. Also, to use any OJ trial reference in relation to this is beyond ridiculous. I'm moving on. Agree it's good the season is starting and fishing is better than this nonsense. Something the NFL top execs need to learn to do as well as many disgruntled sore loser Colt and Raven fans. Here's wishing for the best for all. Go Giants!!!
  8. Manufacturers are improving their offerings every year, even Pelican is coming out with something similar to the Lure called the Catch. Dicks sporting goods also carries the Field & Stream Shadow Caster which is similar to the Lure for $800
  9. The Colts were tipped off by other sore losers the Ravens. Note that There is a range that is acceptable and the Patriots were within the low end of the range. After halftime at the high end of the range, Brady's performance improved and the Colt's were toast. Read all the facts pertaining to the case. Read also Dan Wetzel's piece yesterday in Yahoo sports and you will have a less biased and more informed basis for commenting. Let's move on - new season - Go Giants!!!
  10. An arrogant, know it all bully like Goodell wants to throw his weight around and is envious of Tom Brady- how's that for motivation. Sometimes people in ivory towers need to crush those below them just because they can and this makes them feel good. Sad but true. What a farce this is. Also, on top of Goodell's other character qualities, he's a disloyal double crosser. an all around good guy
  11. So now the NFL is appealing the ruling. A good business person would call this throwing good money after bad. This case could be used to teach any entry level business student how not to run an organization. Anyone familiar with the evidence in the case - read the Wells report as well as subsequent admissions by the NFL to Judge Berman - can see that this whole thing backfired on the NFL and their integrity is now what is questionable. However, they choose to keep this mess going and the dumpster fire that is the NFL headquarters continues to smolder in full public view. I wish this would just go away, however, Goodell and his crew will not let that happen. Go Giants!!!
  12. Thank god we live in the USA, where you can find fairness in the court system to clear your good name. Of course you need lots of money to do it. This is a classic case of the out of touch, so far up in their ivory towers that they are unable to apply a common sense business approach to the simplest of problems. A CEO in any other industry would be shown the door for this type of thing. Maybe this is what will happen to Goodell, who knows. Of course he works for the owners, most of who are far removed from reality, some of who encouraged this nonsense.
  13. Inline spinners - particularly the rooster tail with the silver blade and black body and hair seem to work best in the Adirondack streams for me on bass. Also, the rainbow trout or watermelon color rooster tail work for me as well in streams. These work well on trout as well.
  14. I like the convenience and comfort of hip waders for instances when I don't go too far into the water. I have chest waders for going a little deeper in. The breathable ones with the separate boots are nice, however, not as warm as the ones with the insulated rubber boots attached as part of the waders. I bought a pair of these last year so now I have all three types. Another non fishing application where these chest waders really came in handy was last winter when I had to use the roof rake to clear off the snow from our ranch house roof. In the past years when I'm on the ground moving around the house, I used to post hole in the high snow and get soaked and cold. Now with the waders on if I sink up to my waist in the snow it's no problem.
  15. Good first effort. Could be improved by having microphone closer, as even at highest volume it was hard to hear. Thanks for your contribution.
  16. I use the GYB 3 3/4" craw on an owner ultra shakey 4/0 head and it works beautifully. The plastic fits perfectly on this hook.
  17. Fishing from a kayak, I take only 2 rods. Fishing for bass, they are 7' MF spinning outfits. Any more than that is a recipe for disaster, with the potential for all sorts of trouble caused by things getting in the way. I've learned to spend more time fishing with less stuff, instead of more time messing with stuff and less time actually fishing.
  18. Very well said. When it comes to issues of ethics or morals; if you have to ask, in most if not all cases, you already know the right answer to begin with. In this case, it doesn't matter anyway. Become an official member of the UFFC (unofficial fish for fun club) and you will no longer have to worry about stuff like this. It's easy to join the UFFC, there are no forms or dues - just relax and have fun.
  19. I don't do both in the same day, usually hunt on the weekends with my hunting buddies at hunting camp and fit fishing in during the week around general house upkeep stuff. Used to hunt turkeys in the morning in Delaware County and then go trout fishing in the afternoon in the Delaware River in May. I'm not into turkey hunting as much anymore after having shot dozens over the years in the spring. If turkey hunting were like video games and they would revive after getting shot or if it could be catch and release like fishing, then I may still be into it. Now I'm just into deer hunting and I'm amped up at the beginng, but by the end of ten weeks of it I'm ready for it to be over as I need to get into the holiday things. I enjoy each season and then enjoy getting into the next one.
  20. Best wishes for your recovery. Enjoy all the fishing you can, hopefully it will take your mind off the other stuff and make things go a little better for you.
  21. If by summer you mean until the official end of summer, September 21, I would recommend a lake in the adirondacks. You can check out one of the for rent by owner adirondack sites and get a place for a very reasonable price. We go up in September each year and it is fantastic - less crowds, no bugs and perfect temperatures.
  22. John, when it comes to dropping or losing things out of a boat or kayak, it's better to be worried and prepared before something goes bad. More likely to happen in a kayak than a boat due to proximity to the water and tight quarters. It's a case of everything is o.k. and then in a split second, it's not. I know from personal experience, having dumped my WS tarpon several years ago after being hit by a wake from a boat pulling away from the launch - the wake hit me from the side as I was facing into some small waves. Lost two rods with reels, which just a few inches of foam copper pipe insulation would have saved. Since then, I use the foam insulation and it doesn't get in the way and if something happens, my set up will float. Also, there are no leashes to get in the way of anything. I recently dropped a pole over the side and was able to easily get it back as it was bobbing next to me in the water. No matter how anyone wants to go about preserving their equipment, it's most important to actually be around to retrieve the equipment if the ultimate snafu happens and you tip over. So the first order of business should be to wear a PFD, especially if you are in a kayak.
  23. Just get some of the foam insulation - the gray tube shaped hollow in the middle stuff they use to put around copper water pipes. Comes in 6 foot lengths. This works beautifully and is cheap. Cut the length you need (cuts with scissors or a bread knife)and you can tie wrap it or use a thin piece of wire to wrap it tight on the ends and put it around the rod above the reel or below the reel if you have a split grip pole. One 6 foot length will be more than enough as you only need to use a foot or so to keep your rod & reel floating enough to retrieve it if you drop it in the water. Best of luck to you in your kayak fishing.
  24. Consider also the Field and Stream Elite TecSpec rods. I recently purchased one at Dicks Sporting Goods 25% off of the $80 regular price. You can check out the description at the DSG site. It has micro guides and 36ton graphite blank. Lighter than the Veritas that I have, with a better handle and better feel - a very good value. So far it has been my favorite to use paired with a Pflueger Supreme spinning reel. I compared some of these "house brand rods" as you would call them, in the store with "big brand name rods" and some have many of the same features for half the price. I am guessing that in many cases these are both made by the same manufacturer and just labeled differently, similar to a food product that you buy in the grocery store. For example, frozen Green Giant carrots are the same as XYZ store frozen carrots, you are just paying more for the national brand label. I have no affiliation whatsoever with any type of equipment maker, so the above is just based on my own observations.
