Most versatile hardbait? Depends on what you mean by versatile. I would probably say lipless because of the various speeds and parts of the water column you can cover, but my go-to hardbait in a tough situation when I need to get bit would be a toss-up between a square-bill and a jerkbait.
That's the "necessities" for me. I catch more fish on plastics (in particular roboworms, tubes and anything that says Yamamoto on it) than anything else. Plus those owners were a great deal. Can't beat a buck fifty a bag with the Memorial Day sale.
It's getting worse here in California. Weather reporters are still talking about an El Nino Local lakes are drying up. Lopez at 38% capacity, Nacimiento 27%, Santa Margarita 16%, Cachuma 16%, and San Antonio 5%.
G loomis e6x 845c, 10 lb big game and reel is currently a 6.8:1 lews lfs. Going to get something nicer for it soon, thinking curado I or even Metanium or aldeberan.
California's definitely one of the top states for bass fishing. But hunting and gun laws are another story. Plus the drought could change things if it continues for another year or two.
Its not for the actual retrieve, with that I can speed up or slow down. It's mainly to keep the fish pinned and catch up with them when they make a surge for the surface or come straight at you. You need to make sure you use a high quality reel with enough torque though.
I agree, great baits. A few months ago they were discontinued. I got a few in clown and trout at tackle warehouse for $1.50 each! The hooks alone are worth almost that much.
I like it but don't love it. It makes the nose of the reel bulky and harder to palm, plus it's not great for flipping as others mentioned. I haven't noticed any difference in casting distance over shimanos and lews in the same price range, however it is a little more effortless especially when pitching.
How bout right in the middle. 3.5" is the only size tube I use. My favorite jig head is the 1/8 ounce, 2/0 hook, owner darter head. My favorite colors are green pumpkin and old ugly (made by dry creek and skinny bear) and brown craw green flake (gitzit). EDIT: darter head is 1/4 oz not 1/8 oz.
