  3. Welcome Glenn! Good to have you here! Ronnie
  4. I can't remember a specific "moment" because I can't remember not fishing. I grew up in Plaquemines Parish Louisiana. When I was a kid I knew people who had boats and didn't own a car. I know that I went fishing with grown ups long before I was old enough to be able to fish. Living at the mouth of the Mississippi at the Gulf of Mexico, I had fishing adventures before I was 12 years old that most guys can only dream about. 4 or 5 red snappers on a single cast was common at the oil rigs in the Gulf. In the pipeline canals we caught redfish and speckled trout until we were tired from reeling them in. When I was 11, my brother helped me catch a shark that weighed 5 lbs more than ME. On a trip with a friend of my dad's we caught 1400 lbs of drum in a 400' deep hole 15 miles out in the Gulf. When I was a kid, Louisiana really was the "Sportsman's Paradise". I miss those days, but I still love to fish. Ronnie
  5. Yes I have another hobby/passion........................... Like it better than fishing?? Just depends on what I have planned. I do get the same excitement out of preparing the bike and planning for a long MC trip that I do for a big fishing event. My 15 year old daughter loves to do both with me. LIFE IS GOOOD!!! Ronnie
  6. Even though Shimano bought the company in 1997, all G. Loomis Rods and blanks are and always have been, made in Woodland, Washington by american workers. St. Croix has 3 rod lines that are made in China and all of their branded reels are made in England, Japan, Thailand and China. I don't get the made in the US point. Ronnie
  7. Mick, Loomis has a 7' Medium Fast spinning blank in both GL3 ($105) and GLX ($230) in case you are still interested. BTW - I wrapped all my Loomis rods also. Here's a link to their spinning blanks.. http://products.gloomis.com/gl/products/blanks/alltackle/family.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302032553&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395181201&bmUID=1190845594042 Ronnie
  8. Tony, I don't know where you live, but if you find yourself in central NJ, let me know. You are welcome to try mine out. I am one of the Loomis ambassadors on the board. LOL Ronnie
  9. 5BL, That's a great rod, I have the SJ722. You will enjoy it for sure. Just be careful, you just might be tempted to hang a Straidic or a Sustain on it. I would hate to see you ridin with RW's posse. Ronnie
  10. If you have your mind made up, then why ask the question??? Significantly better is up to you. I haven't fished a St. Croix Avid so I can't make a comparison, but they must be worth it to me because I have a 1/2 dozen Loomis IMX & GLX rods. I think you should try a Loomis before you decide that it can't be any better. JMHO Ronnie
  11. Lookin good! Nice fish! Keep goin after the big ones! Yea! Ronnie
  12. Hey Mike, Keep that livewell working and try fishing some local charity and buddy tournaments. You don't have to win to have a good time and meet some good fishermen. I am strictly catch and release also, but I fish a few C&R tourneys each year. You can't participate without a livewell. They are always a lot of fun and can help a good cause. Just a thought. Ronnie
  13. What he said, only hook the trailer so it will have the best action. In other words you want it to move as much as possible. This usually happens when you hook it right in the center. JMHO Ronnie
  14. I just counted and I have 10 Shimano reels. One is brand new, one is over 30 years old and the rest are in between. All work flawlessly. I guess we don't all have the same experience. Yep I am in the posse. Ronnie
  15. Good one Kidd brother, You had me all the way. I hope you don't mind if I recycle that one. Ronnie
  16. Here's my crazy story...... I spotted a beautiful 6 acre pond in Amite, LA when I was surveying the right of way for a 500 KV power transmission line from the Pearl river in MS to Baton Rouge. I stopped to ask the owner (turned out to be the care taker the owner lived in NY) if I could fish the pond. His answer was an emphatic NNNOOO!! So I changed the subject and asked what he knew about the big power line that was comming through. He was very interested (as was everyone as this was a very controversial project) so I gave him a few juicy pieces of information and promised I would stop by from time to time and keep him up to date on the power line. Anyway, I stopped by once a week or so and chewed the fat with the old guy and told him what I knew about the power line, which wasn't much, but he enjoyed the conversation. One day I learned he was partial to Mountain Dew soft drinks and salty peanuts, so I began bringing some along on my visits. After almost a year went by, during one of these visits I asked, "so when are you gonna let me fish that pond?" He laughed out loud and said "you can fish it anytime, just don't leave a mess and let me know you are here". After work on May 18, 1982 I stopped to fish with a guy from work. After checking in with the care taker we started casting the banks. My friend hooked up right away with a nice big fish and I watched from across the pond as she jumped and spit the lure. I remember thinking that fish had to be 5lbs. My adrenalin was pumping big time. He landed a couple more about 3 lbs and I'm working hard without a bite. I had a brand new ABU 5600 (I think this was the first ABU reel with a thumb bar spool release) and a "Worm" brand rod. I had over a hundred $ in that setup and that was lot of money 25 years ago. I tied on a 1/2 oz Arkie jig with an "Uncle Josh" black widow eel and made a perfect cast into a pile of myrtle bushes along the bank and #@%*! the freakin reel wouldn't retrieve. I fooled with it for a while and couldn't get it to engage the spool and finally gave up. That was the last time I didn't have back up rig since then. I yelled for my buddy to ask if he had an extra rod. He sent me to his pickup to see. I found a combo, LOL a "Zebco" 202 with a 5 1/2' rod with one of the guides busted off. Undeterred, I tied the jig and eel on the twisted up line and made 6 or 8 casts against the only bluff bank on the pond and finally the jig & eel bounced off the bank and as soon as it hit the water the line took off like a rocket towards the middle of the pond. I reeled down and set the hook hard. Only then did I learn that the drag on the little zebco just didn't work. It was miracle that the hook snagged the tounge of this bass. So now I am hooked up with a 6 1/2 pound bass and can't reel him in. This I can't retrieve line thing is getting to be a big problem. I am screaming at my buddy to get his butt over to help me. I finally wrap the line around my hand and walk backwards up the bank and just as I get her to the edge of the pond she makes one last bolt into a myrtle bush and gets tangled up. I am screaming like an idiot for my bud to get in there and get that fish or come hold the line so I can. This whole thing looked like Abbot and Costello meets the Little Rascals. My man jumped in the pond waist deep and gently untangled my prize from the herbs. My heart was beating the buttons off my shirt. I remember carrying that bass back to the truck and looking at her mouth and thinking "this is why they call them Large Mouth bass". The taxidermist said she weighed about 6 1/2 lbs. I have caught a few that have come close, but she is still # 1. After 25 more years of fishing she was certainly worth the time & Mountain Dews. Thats my crazy story. Oh Yea! THE FISH................
  17. Welcome to the Shimano Posse. You have been officially deputized. Congrats on the new reel, enjoy. Ronnie
  18. Although I like to fan cast an area with a spinnerbait to cover it quickly, I can also cover a lot of water with a jig with short range pitching to stumps, stick-ups, under docks, etc. I just keep the boat moving and pitch to every fishy looking spot. Land the jig softly, let it sink to the bottom, hop it once or twice, reel it up and hit the next stump. Have caught some nice fish this way. Never thought of it as searching, but I guess that's what it is. LOL Ronnie
  19. Alpster

    I got

    Excellent!! Congratulations! :) Ronnie
  20. +1 Ronnie
  21. I use the "Water Gremlin" sinker stoppers. They are tiny split bullets. You just pinch them on like a split shot in front of your regular bullet sinker. They are very easy and don't hurt the line. Check them out. http://www.watergremlin.com/sinker%20stopper/sinkerstopperindex.htm Ronnie
  22. Several boxes full in the office. I usually take 1/2 dozen spinnerbaits & 4 or 5 buzzbaits in the boat. These are expendable baits for me. I twist the heck out of them to make them run hard to the left or right so they bang into stumps & sticks better. Next to soft plastics & jigs, I catch the most fish on spinnerbaits. They don't have to be fancy, they just have to spin properly. JMHO. Ronnie
  23. I am very line consious, it has to fit the technique and be fresh. Me too! +1
  24. ....you have been gone for 3 days while bass are on the bed and your wife is confident that you are not cheating on her. Ronnie
