Hey Keith,
If your truck is not at least 20 years old, chances are, there is (should say was) a spring or seive in the filler tube that prevents siphoning. Which means it's now broken and pieces of it can/may be in your tank. Thieves would have to break it to get a hose into the tank. The broken pieces can damage the fuel gauge and/or pump) if it's electric and mounted in the tank. Not all vehicles have these, but it is pretty common. The best way to find out is from someone who has the same truck. Of course, if you have ever siphoned from your own tank (for the lawn mower or boat) the answer is clear.
Just thought I would cheer you up. Sorry, I know it's not funny, but you should check on it as you make your repairs. I have great disdain for thieves. Really sorry for your circumstances.
