  1. I've looked at the pflueger combos in the $70 range, and I think that is doable for me. My wife said it could be an early birthday present for me! Ha!
  2. Thanks for the feedback folks - will look into that!
  3. I didn't fully witness it but heard all of it - my parents and grandmother and myself were cat fishing one day when I heard everyone scrambling down the bank from me. My grandmother telling my dad don't move, let me get the net. My dad had caught a monster cat apparently and it was right on the bank, he moved his pole and the hook popped out - fish still laying there, he reaches down to get it and fish flops in water. I hear him yell, my fish, then I hear a big splash! My dad jumped in after that fish! He said it was the biggest one he'd ever seen!
  4. Yeah after reading a little I realized there were suitable kids poles out there that were better quality but she had her heart set on that princess one! Funny thing - I had a snoopy pole my grandmother got me as a kid and she ended up using it more than I did and caught so many fish on it it's not even funny! She wore the reel out! I still have the rod! Of course that was 30 years ago - they were probably better made back then!
  5. Let's say something on the lower end honestly - don't have a lot of money to invest. I know you get what you pay for, but I'm talking fishing maybe 1-2 times a month thru the spring and summer. Maybe!
  6. Yeah I realize there's a learning curve. I've used a baitcast a few times fishing with my cousin when I was a kid and seem to remember doing okay with it. I just didn't know if there were any particular advantages given in primarily pond fishing and if there were any particular differences between the two given the type of fishing being done.
  7. Didn't mean to exclude spinning - would it be the "better" option since my primary use is plastics?
  8. I hope this isn't one of those topics that should be avoided - but for someone looking to upgrade from their old zebco 33/404 - what would be the next step? A baitcast? Primarily all the fishing I'm doing is gonna be bass and catfish from lakes/ponds with plastics primarily and good old stinky stuff for catfish. Or am I just as well suited with the spincast?
  9. Sorry - I just realized you were responding to someone else about using the braid.
  10. I didn't use braid and if it came with 8 I just replaced it with 8! Ha. I thought I had read 4 or 6# but I can't find that anywhere now.
  11. Thanks for the replies. Got it done. Not sure I did a great job with it being my first try - did better on my own reel but it's done! Ready for our fishing trip now!
  12. Okay - thanks! I had searched everywhere on the net for some info and couldn't find anything. Will probably be doing that tonight - got another fishing trip planned for Saturday. Will be the first time I've respooled a reel too! Yes, I'm a newb!
  13. I've always heard it had something to do with the barometric pressure and that there is a connection or something - I could be way off! Ha!
  14. Thanks for all the welcomes! And I agree you can't beat SEC football!
  15. My grandmother always said if the cows were all laying down the fish weren't biting!
  16. Just thought I'd introduce myself - name is Brian, I'm 36, started fishing as a kid with my grandmother who was the main fisherman in the family. All we ever did was bank fishing in ponds and lakes for catfish, bream and bass - mostly catfish though. Have just in the last couple of years started fishing for bass and using plastics, etc. grew up using everything zebco and actually still have a zebco 33 and 404. I hope that isn't fuel for huge debates here - ha - I haven't fished much since I was a kid and just never branched out to anything else really. Took my 3 year old daughter fishing for the first time the other day and I think she loved it, until the fish flopped and scared her half to death! Looking forward to getting to know everyone here!
  17. I bought my little girl a pole recently - yes, one of those cheap character ones, she's 3- she wanted the princess one! I was wondering if it'd be possible to replace the line on it. It did stand up to landing about a 1.5lb bass the other day. I have some 8lb test line I was thinking of putting on it, but didn't know if it'd handle it or if it'd even be worth my trouble. Any advice?
