  1. The LTB looks better to some, is a bit lighter and has more backbone.
  2. What techniques do you want to use it for?
  3. Which rods do you think are better than St. Croix for the money. I don't think you can make a generalized statement that about one brand. They have rods that are an excellent value, and some very light sticks as well. However, each is entitled to their own opinion.
  4. Look at a St Croix Trout series or Panfish series. I like my trout series a lot better than my Premier. The trout series also has a faster action that the Premier. Another great UL rod is a Fenwick River Runner. I have one of the old models, and it is probably my most used rod. Not sure about the newer models though. The Pflueger Supreme is a good reel, as is the Shimano Sahara. Spool up with some light (2-4lb) copolymer or mono or 2-6lb Fireline, and you should be good to go
  5. Ice not thick enough to ice fish, but too thick to punch with a 4oz weight...
  6. I prefer a shorter casting rod for Senkos, because I like to make very accurate casts to cover. I use an LTB 6'8" MH/F with a 50e Chronarch and 10lb copolymer or 20lb braid. Spinning gear with, as suggested, a MH power and fast action will also work well.
  7. Nope! not when you have a winter steelhead run and awesome perch fishing through the ice.
  8. Lol I was looking at that picture for a good few minutes thinking: Shimano doesn't make centerpin reels???? Nice reel though!
  9. Head size: Match the size of head to the depth of water you are fishing. Shallower water-lighter head, deeper water-heavier head. Head color: Match to the color of the bait. Not really a key factor in catching fish. Trailers: Beavers are a great bait to use on wobble head jigs. Rage bugs, Pit Bosses, and Ugly Otters all works well. Paddle tail swimbaits like Grass Pigs and Swing Impacts are also great. Craws like Chiggers and Rage Craws work exceptionally well when dragged along the bottom. Experiment with different baits. Ribbontails, Senkos and grubs can all work well. Rod: 6'8''-7'6'' M/XF or MH/XF casting rod. The extra fast action is perfect for getting good hooksets, especially with big, heavy wire hooks. My favorite is a 7'2'' MH/XF. Reel: Just about any baitcast reel you have will work fine. 6 to 8 gear with a good drag. I use a 7 gear Shimano. Line: 20-40lb braid or 10-17lb flourocarbon or copolymer line will work well. In clear water scenarios, use a fluorocarbon leader with the braid. I prefer Sufix 832 or Power Pro braid in 20 or 30lb test with a 12 or 15lb leader. Retrieve: Try experimenting with different retrieves. Fast, slow, start/stop, drag, swim and hopping retrieves all work. Good luck!
  10. I use a 7' ML/F Avid spinning rod with 6lb P-Line Floroclear in open water with 1/8 to 3/16 oz jigs. If I am ripping them through weeds, I go to a 6'6'' M/F Avid spinning rod with 10lb Power Pro braid and a 12lb fluorocarbon leader. Any less than 1/8 oz, a light power trout rod is perfect. 2000/2500 size spinning reel on the ML/F, 2500/3000 size on the M/F.
  11. There is an ad on my screen right now that says ' Top 10 mistakes that cold callers make '. Sometimes the web scares me...
  12. Fireline is a very good option, but I felt that it frayed fairly easily. my recommendation would be to use P-Line floroclear in either 2, 3 or 4 lb test. It is sensitive, supple and invisible underwater. Good luck on your crappie adventures.
  13. Happy New year. May 2015 be a bassy year for all!
  14. 1:19 I almost threw up.
  15. I don't even like those Macs.
  16. The Muskokas are a great place to fish. Welcome to the forums!
  17. Chompers Tubes Bite-Me tube heads.
  18. < caught on 4lb leader and a light power Fenwick trout rod (With a 3/8th oz crankbait ) Short answer: Yes. UL rods are my favorite way to fish for smallies. In fact, I rarely ever use a rod heavier than a light power for them. UL rods are a much better choice when used in small creeks that probably do not hold large fish. They also work well fishing small ponds. And if you think 4lb test is a challenge, try 2lb test. If you set your drag right, you can land some pretty large fish.
  19. Since it is a larger spinning reel, go with a 7' MH spinning rod. Bring your reel into a tackle shop and put it onto all sorts of different rods until you find one that feels right. Welcome to the forums!
  20. I use 40 for frogging and punching and rarely break off. You could get away with lighter if you fished more sparse cover.
  21. Nice job, you killed it!
