  1. Tonight I was getting consistent bites in some wood throwing a jig and craw but never hooked a fish. The bites felt like 2-3 pecks on the lure. At one point I made a cast and right as it hit the water the line started unraveling like something was carrying it away but then nothing. There are also a ton of little turtles around too and I wonder if it was them. Any suggestions? One thought I had was going with smaller tackle in these situations.
  2. My pole is somewhere in the 6'5" range.
  3. That clears it up then. As for soft entry, I noticed if I release the reel at a certain time in the throw the lure stays close to the ground all the way out instead of arcing so I just have to figure that out. I wasn't wildly inaccurate but not pinpoint. Any accuracy tips?
  4. I decided to teach myself pitching. So, after a few youtube videos and went into the yard and practiced for a while. Farthest distance so far is about 15 yards. What is the typical pitching distance?
  5. I've tried several of those spinnerbaits and just don't like them. The blades feel weak in the water to me and they rust easily.
  6. Actually, we have a 2-3 person canoe but now that we have an infant we haven't been taking it out until she can handle being on a boat...it's a bit big for one person to handle. Thought about a sit-on-top fishing kayak.
  7. All of you martial artists out there will probably relate to this...particularly those of you who do mma-type arts like bjj and muay thai because they seem to embrace Bruce Lee more than others. What I have realized after reading boat loads of fishing articles and doing a lot of fishing is that there are no set rules...and the rules are really just guidelines. What might have been the "gospel truth" in fishing years ago is now broken (e.g., Kevin Van Dam). And what seems to work for some doesn't work for others. In other words, what fishing really comes down to is "use what works and discard the rest" and "what works" could be different for each person. This is Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do actualized in bass fishing. BOOM! That just happened
  8. Haha, "panic box" I like that.
  9. I might check out braid. I've always used mono. Braid should up the sensitivity to strikes also I think.
  10. How do you tend to cycle through your lures on a fishing trip? I almost always start with a spinnerbait, then move to a jig or plastics, then maybe a different spinner or go to a crankbait, then back to a plastic...sorta alternating reaction vs. finesse lures.
  11. I wondered how those things work...i'll have to check it out.
  12. and I was fishing from the bank today too...I left when I lost the "weedless" t-rigged craw -- it got stuck between two branches
  13. Two spinnerbaits, a diving crankbait, and a Texas-rigged craw....maybe I'll just fish soft plastics for a while since they are cheap haha.
  14. Agreed. I think the "ponds are easier to catch fish" is a bunch of BS too. If I had a bass boat I would be on a lake more but ponds are much less hassle.
  15. lol, yeah you did. It's ok though, I was done with it.
  16. practically speaking, if I can see the whole thing at once and walk around the thing in a reasonable amount of time then it's a pond
  17. Anyone ever start your weekday morning with a few casts before work? I'm talking a job you have to be at by 9am at the latest. I go after work but only get in 1 to 1.5 hrs at a time.
  18. There have been small turtles everywhere at a pond I've been fishing lately. None have bitten my lure yet but they sure do make me nervous for that reason...not sure of the species but they are not snapping turtles.
  19. I would just find a map you like on Google, put it in Powerpoint and add the arrows and text you want to the picture.
  20. That is exactly my approach too!
  21. I would say enjoy the experience of fishing rather than only focused on catching fish...sometimes the fish don't come but it is fun anyway.
  22. I typically prefer fishing on small ponds rather than massive lakes. I think they are easier to break down than a lake. Found a new neighborhood pond just the other day and caught a nice bass just before dark. Then again, I don't have a fancy bass boat with sonar etc... Who else prefers ponds?
  23. either a spinnerbait or a plastic worm, can't decide which
  24. What span of time are we talking about here? I caught a good bass two evenings ago at my neighborhood pond just before dark. I was using a small Booyah Pond Magic spinnerbait. I tend to do better near dusk. Also, try not to stand right at the edge of the bank. I've heard people say that certain types of clothing can spook fish too...
