Hello folks, I just created an account on this site and hope I am posting in the right place. I have been fishing recreationally for the past couple years and I really enjoy it. I have a 4'6" Cabela's spinning rod/ reel combo with 4 pound fluorocarbon line that has served me well over the past few years. I have been fishing mostly small pools and streams where there isn't much room to navigate and most of my casts are no more than 8-12 yards. I either run a small spinner or a worm on a hook and catch mostly trout, sunfish, and shiners; all typically in the 5-10" range.
I moved to a new apartment complex and there is a pond right out back, probably 100x50 yards in size. When the season opens, I would like to start fishing this spot. I don't have a boat but I have walked around the shore and have seen some pretty big fish swimming around as well as lots of surface activity. Couldn't really make out what they were but they were definitely much bigger than what I have been catching in the past. I asked a few neighbors and they said people have caught 4 pound largemouth bass in there as well as 10 pound carp and catfish.
I'm looking to buy a new rod/reel setup that is ideal for this setting. I would really like a baitcasting reel; I have never used one before but I would like to learn. I know there are some disadvantages and they take some time to get used to but I am willing to deal with that. Cabela's currently has a combo on sale for $50. It's an Abu Garcia Black Max 2 with a Cabela's brand "Pro Guide" rod. It comes in 6', 6'6", and 7". I am open to other brands and models but from what I have heard, this is a pretty good bang for the buck and has good reviews. Would this be ok and if so, which size? Next, is the line. I know there are different kinds: mono, fluoro, and braided. Which would be best and what test would be appropriate? Are there any disadvantages in using a heavier line than necessary? I don't really know too much about bass lures but I will I will save that topic for another time. I just want to focus on the rod/reel/line for now.
Thanks for your help,
John
