I’m right handed, and I do all my casting and my reeling with my right hand. The whole “switching hands” argument makes me laugh. It happens so fast that I went 25 years without even realizing it. It’s a non-factor. For whatever reason, on the rare occasion I take my fly rod out, I do my winding with my left hand as it just feels natural with a fly rod.

One week from today, every team will have had their pitchers and catcher report to spring training. Can’t wait! Opening day of baseball and ice-out on the lakes are usually within a week of each other.

I use Yo-Zuri HD Carbon 100% fluorocarbon leader material. Not meant to be used as a mainline, strictly leader material. It’s sold in spools of 20 or 30 yards. Never had a leader knot fail with it, and esox bite-offs are rare. Anybody who follows basketball knows how out of left field this trade was. When I first saw the headline, I had to check the date and I expected to see April 1st. Pretty hard to justify trading away a 25 year old superstar who has top 10 all time potential and just led your team to a Finals appearance. This trade seems like possibly the worst trade in history, and the more I think about it, the more it seems like Dallas has inside information that Donçic’s leg was about to fall off or something. Even if you point to his injury history, it still doesn’t make sense when you realize the player they got in return is 6 years older and even more injury prone. Im glad I’m not a Dallas fan.

I sometimes hear these guys hooting when I launch my boat before the sun is up. Very spooky sounds they make. Unmistakable. I hear them right outside the camp a lot as well in the evenings.

I have Shimano, Diawa, Lew’s, Pflueger, Abu, and KastKing in my arsenal, and the only brand I wouldn’t buy again is Abu. My Pfluegers are work horses, and my Lew’s serve specific roles that made them the best option when purchased, and are joys to fish with. Would and will buy both brands again. My one Kastking just keeps working no matter how much hell I put it through. At the prices of Kastking I would definitely buy again. Going on 10 or so years of abuse on that reel, never serviced it, yet it keeps hucking. I stay away from Shimano spinning reels. I haven’t had great luck with them. Their casting reels work fine for me though and would buy again. My daiwa reels, nothing needs to be said. Would and will buy more Daiwa. Variety is the spice of life.

Athol as in Warren County, NY? Tons and tons of opportunities for shore fishing in Warren county. And if you hike in, those shore opportunities can be even better. The Hudson, Schroon, and Sacandaga rivers have public access along the road throughout the Adirondacks. I see it looks like a different Athol. Apologies. Point stands though, if you’re ever in the other Athol lol

Old girl love the snow. She seems to walk better in the snow, I think it feels good on her arthritis.

We’re a winter wonderland once again. Got 6” over night, more coming tomorrow evening. Up to 25 total snow events for about 28”. So far we’ve managed to avoid a monster storm. But March is usually good for a doozy or two as a final middle finger as winter ends.

I use Power Pro and Sufix 832. They both perform great on casting gear. Haven’t found issues with either line on casting gear, other than it flattening out after a lot of use, which is the same as any braid I’ve ever used.

A lot of people use braid on spinning gear. I am not one of them. For me it’s strictly casting gear because I hate how it performs on spinning gear, but I recognize I am in the extreme minority. Some braids cast better than others, but I think that’s more brand to brand than it is casting to spinning. And now they make scissors designed specifically to cut braided line, so if you get a pair of those, your cutting woes should be non existent.

Hard Candy and Fire Craw from Rage Tail are great. Green tomato is a spinnerbait skirt color from Strike King and its accounted for more bass than probably any other single color or pattern for me the last decade. Siebert Outdoors colors Bama Craw and Bluegill are two of my favorites as well.

Chug Bug Jitterbug Culprit ribbon tails. These are still mainstays in my tackle box.

We’re at 20” total this year with 22 days that received some type of winter precipitation. Not bad for my neck of the woods. It’s been frigid cold, but we could easily receive a single storm that dumps 20”, so that amount spread across 2 months so far isn’t bad at all.

First and foremost, my boat is powered by “pounds of thrust” rather than horsepower. Kind of hard to fish a tourney when your top speed is so slow.

When I went to Baccarac, we were told to bring a minimum of 20lb line, and they recommended that line be nylon. So I went with several spools of 20 and 25lb Berkeley Big Game. Seemed like a perfect choice. The cover can be abrasive. As@A-Jay mentioned, the cover is mainly submerged trees. Lots of rock structure as well. The trees are of the very tangly variety and you definitely don’t want to let a big Mexican bass bury down into them. I don’t remember ever seeing a single blade of aquatic grass or any type of seaweed.

I haven’t used dirty jigs, but I do use Siebert jigs exclusively and the brush head is my favorite. It does well coming through weeds. It may not be the best option for heavy weeds, but it comes through weeds well enough that when I’m done pitching it to brush, I don’t feel the need to change jigs when I hit the hydrilla or milfoil next. To me it’s a jack of all trades jig, and an ace at coming through brush/timber.
