I use an 8.x:1 for applications where I’m using the rod to move the bait. Topwaters, jigs, plastics etc. I want to be able to pick up that slack with a single turn of the reel handle.

Stuff You Should Know. Thousands of episodes, and the two hosts really do their research and breakdown a topic in a very digestible, humorous way. This Past Weekend with Theo Von is really good too. For fishing, BTL is the best, especially Thursday episodes. Tackle Talk is ok too, if you remember to skip the 20 minute ad read to start the show.

@throttleplate yeah The Clone Wars is an animated series. Didn’t think it would be my thing either until I gave it a shot. It explains so much of what takes place between Episodes 2 & 3 and gives context to it all. It’s very entertaining and was easy for me to forget I was watching an animated series. I highly recommend it, especially if you’ve watched all the live action content. It gives a ton of context to the universe, and makes it all the more interesting in my opinion.

I am of the opinion that “pattern” fishing is one of the most overused, overstated phrases in bass fishing, as if fish have a hive mind. I don’t believe that every bass in the lake collectively agrees to something such as “we’re only gonna bite a jig that hops 3 times. If it hops less or more than 3 times, we’re going to ignore it” or something like that. Patterns certainly exist, I just don’t believe it’s to the extent, or to such specific circumstances that many bass anglers claim. I think back to a Tactical Bassin video in which Matt stated that sometimes he’s fishing a jig and if he does a double hop he will not get a single bite, but if he does triple hops with the jig, he can’t keep bass off his line. To me that seems like a silly notion.

I rarely work soft plastics all the way back to the boat. I’ll pitch/cast them, let them fall, lift and repeat a couple times, then I reel up and make my next pitch. To me it’s a waste of time working a bait back to the boat when 99% of my strikes occur during the initial descent or shortly thereafter.

So far it’s been mild. A 10 inch storm and a few 2-3 inchers is it. But February and early March are the real tests. The Ariens hasn’t gotten too much use this year and I hope it stays like that.

Based on the last several years, it will probably be about 5.5 pounds and 22 inches long. And I’m going to assume it will be caught on a spinnerbait.

I fish from shore when there isn’t enough time to get the boat out. Sometimes my Dad and I will hit up a golf course pond. Walking the bank and fishing casually can be a nice reset.
