  1. Great info guys. Just a little more info on the lake: 1. One place is pretty much featureless. its has a big contour change since its on a channel edge but as it goes back, its pretty shallow. no lay downs or cypress trees. It's a prime duck hole during the winter. 2. The other grass flat begins at a channel edge where the lake was dredged. The channel goes from 10-12 feet to the 4 foot flat. as you move up toward the bank, the depth nears 2 ft and the edge is matted hyaciths and stuff, which i usually punch. The flat has kinda patchy grass. A clump here and there mixed with pad stems in some spots. The flat has has a good many cypress trees which I've caught fish off of. However, I think that that the that the bigs ones shy away from the trees bc everyone hits them. Once the grass matted last summer, I fished a frog and caught some pretty good ones, but once the sun came up, the top water bite died and the grass was too thick to swim a jig or swimbait. So I flipped around around little bit with no success and then punted and ran to the cypress trees.
  2. The water depth ranges from 2-4 feet and the grass grows anywhere from 6 inches to all the way to the top of the water column (depending on time of year).
  3. My home lake has a lot of bank beaters, and there is really not much deep water structure. I'm wanting to give punching and flippin' cypress trees a break and start fishing the huge grass flats that the lake has. Any tips on how to attack giant grass flats that run anywhere from 2ft-4ft? For example, 1. What to look for? any subtleties? 2. Bait choice? (square bill, trap, chatter bait, fluke).... 3. When to move? 4. Cast in the grass or parallel it? 5. Work top of grass? middle? or bottom? ( how to attack each zone?) These are just a few that i can think of, but any tips that y'all have would be great. Thanks guys.
  4. Does anyone know why the rage tail line has gone up in price? Only a few baits like the structure bug and lizard were $5.49, but now almost all the Rage tail line is going to that price.
  5. No. No big mountains but I there are a good many hills in north Louisiana.
  6. yeah. im having similar thoughts as everyone else. the brakes are bad just for driving. much less when pulling ~3000 lb. i know its not ideal but im in college so im stuck with it for now. all i need it to do is pull the boat on 30min-60min trips about 3 times a month. i think it can handle it if the boat's weight is well distributed about the trailers axle. I have towed an weldbilt 1460 john boat with diamond plate decking and a heavy 25hp 4-stroke. And when i set the cruise, it usually gets about the same gas milage as without the boat. i was still able to pass other cars up with relative ease. i know the 175vs is a much bigger and heavier boat, but hopfully the jeep can "handle it" but not "excel with it", if you know what i mean.
  7. I think im gonna make a deal on a 2006 ranger 175vs i am concerened about pulling it around since i drive a Jeep Wranglar sport. What do you guys think about pulling the boat with a short wheeled based jeep?
  8. I love roboworm's worms so I was curious about their craw. Not much on YouTube or google. Thanks guys.
  9. okay. i installed it a while back and i couldnt remember if it was dual or not.
  10. Does anyone know if lowrance sells just the power cable for the elite 5 DSI unit? I found a transducer on west marine.com I have the unit mounted on my trolling motor but i really would like to have one to use at higher speeds so i can cover more water. I am a college student and i cant really afford to by another unit. My plan is to have 2 transducers and 2 power cords, and switch the unit from the front of the boat to the rear as needed. Thanks.
  11. that makes since. bc most of my fish are coming off of cypress trees. so if the bass are using the tree to pin my bait agsinst the tree, then that would put them in between me and the bait.
  12. happened twice this morning. one was a t-rigged senko and the other was on a rage rig. both tied w imprpved clinch knot. the only thing i can think of is that im waiting too long to set the hook. the fish have been biting very light and not very aggressively. so once i feel the bite, im waiting a little longer than normal to set the hook. im not really sure. i just dont want to harm the fish.
  13. I've noticed this year, more than normal, I'm hooking fish in their bottom jar and tongue area? I know it all depends on how the fish eats it sometimes but what is the deal?
  14. I saw a thread with a guy that would, for example, take the bottom half of a brush hog and connect it to a sweet beaver. I am looking into doing the same thing to get a bait color that the manufacturor doesnt sell individually, but sells the two colors individually. Im guessing i could use a soldering iron or something like that to melt the plastics together. Any ideas?
  15. Did you fish it in and around heavy cover, or in open water? My thread seems kinda dumb because my last frog rod was a 6 foot MH. So my new rod is much better suited than my old one, and i seemed to manage the fish in heavy cover pretty well with a little 6 foot rod. lol. But im upgrading all my rods and reels to dobyns and 13 *** reels. So I just want to try and get my combos right. That way I dont have to backtrack or buy another rod bc this one isnt performing as I hoped.
  16. I recently bought a dobyns Savy series rod. It's a 7ft heavy action. It's rated for (1/4)-1 oz lures. When I took it out the first time, the action seem a little lighter than I expected. I ended up throwing a caffeine shad and doing pretty well. My question is for those guys with dobyns rod: do you think it is able to throw 5/8 oz hollow body frogz and 3/8 oz dirty jigs swim jig? During the summer, I do fish around so pretty thick grass when frogging. I bought this rod with macro guides bc I planned on tying a short leader to my braid when throwing my swim jigs. I know a lot of guys like longer rods but I had a 7'6" once And hated it. 7 ft is perfect for me to fish out of my kayak. Anyway, please let me know of any experiences with the heavy action dobyns rods and how they performed with frogging and swim jigging. Thanks.
  17. Z mans frogs float and they produce! They are also very durable, I swung a small gar , we call them copels, into the boat and he was only biting the leg. I used the bait the rest of the summer.
  18. Whatever you do, don't try the Z man pop frogz
  19. It's hard to ignore whenever he is always catching pigs on the show! I have used it and have caught two 4 pounders. It's a pretty good sized bait so it probably intimidates smaller fish.
  20. Does anyone know where I can locate some black/blue, black, or sapphire Zoom Fat Albert Single Tail Grubs? I have searched the web and called my local tackle shops and I cannot locate any. I found a place in Montanna but they are closed until they thaw out. Thanks for any suggestions.
