  1. What were the weights on some of those largemouth? NICE JOB
  2. It's a great fish to bread & fry. The only times I eat bass are when I am camping or thinning the herd in a pond.
  3. Ice was about 3" thick, I took an aluminum canoe on the ice to spread my weight out just in case, because it isn't considered "safe" until you have 4"...The trout ate a minnow suspended under a float (the minnow's intended target was largemouth)
  4. You can say that again
  5. I didn't know how to fish a baitcaster or target bass until the fall of 2013, now all I ever do is think about green and brown fish...Started with a silver max, and I am still using them until I can switch over to some lews. The black max isn't far behind and should be a great reel to learn with. I would advise against braid since it will get very expensive very quickly if you get a couple really bad back lashes. Get a bulk spool of 12lb mono and have at it!
  6. VA has two days every year I think.
  7. No matter how well you play your cards, fish can always spit the hook. Even if you split their head wide open with a 5/0 flipping hook and 65lb braid.
  8. Enough filets in the freezer for this guy to swim free
  9. Did some canoe-assisted ice fishing today, it was too cold and I didn't last long (wind chill was around 0 degrees) but I managed a nice rainbow. Pretty fish!
  10. Today is the third day I am out of school because of snow (only 5-6"!)....Normally when it snows it isn't cold enough to freeze ponds and rivers, so I get to fish.....And if we had these cold temps w/o the snow, I could at least ice fish, but the snow just keeps the ice unsafe. Spent the past 2 days towing a kayak behind a UTV and it's getting old
  11. Find the warmest water. Watch what thaws out first when you have skim ice, or just fish shallow water that gets a lot of sun exposure if you don't get ice where you live. They are more active and easier to catch when they go to the warmer water, even if the change is only a degree or two.
  12. And that fish looks a LOT bigger than 2-300lbs
  13. Before the zebra mussels, snakeheads, and lampreys, they reached that size regularly
  14. Any fish on that swimbait yet? Nice job on the bass, what sort of temperatures were you working with from the plant?
  15. Waders. Nothing gets wet.
  16. I fish out of a kayak that is basically the same as that one, mine is a 10' sit in. I have a fishfinder on it, and have landed ungodly amounts of fish/paddled many miles in it. I weigh around 150lbs and I can stand and fish from it (takes practice), in 3 yrs I have only fallen once, this is including throwing swimbaits and the hooksets that come with them.
  17. Try hauling 46 geese back to the truck in boot foot chest waders (yesterday)
  18. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVYup3Qwh8Q Music video is STRANGE but the song is GREAT
  19. I was standing in my kayak, and made a very stupid flip behind me over my right shoulder to a piece of cover I missed. Got bit, and made the most awkward hookset ever, didn't hook the fish, and decided to jump out instead of rolling my kayak over. Water wasn't over my head so it turned out alright, continued to have an excellent day afterwords. My friend slipped on some ice in February last year while goose hunting, and swamped his waders. We were a quarter mile from the tractor we used to get there, and a mile from the house with 15-20" of heavy wet snow on the ground. I was very worried about him but luckily we made it back to the house and he warmed up.
  20. I catch way more with a buddy----because when I'm alone, my bait choice tends to prevent numbers of small fish . Except this time of year....I am a pretty patient guy, but I don't fish big baits in frigid water. I am happy with any bass right now.
  21. I like casting parallel to the bank like you said, but I will do what I think is best for the situation. The only time I cast before getting to the bank is if I am directly approaching a "fishy" spot.
  22. In the Lower Chesapeake, eels are the way to go. Back when I was 10 or 11, my little brother and I caught two giants near the CBBT on eels. Mine was 48lbs, his 45lbs, and my dad got a 39 the same day. Never had fishing that good since then.
  23. The more of the little guys you take out now, the more of the big guys you will have in years to come. Good stuff
  24. Was your 7-6 on a taildancer caught while targeting smallies?
