  1. If everone keeps talking about how good regular power pro is and how reasonably priced it is at wally world they're gonna raise the prices. Power pro is expensive and horrible line. Mono backing? That's just plain crazy! ;-)
  2. Should work good for spinnerbaits. Yes let us know how you like it.
  3. I do fish the reel hard. So far I m surprised. I hope Daiwa trys to tweak these more someday making it more rugged like a tatula but light and palmable. If you use left hand retrieve (cast right) and switch hands you can hit the twing hood to re engage as you switch. Kinda neat feature also.
  4. Yes the 8 to 1 ratio does have very little cranking power. I haven't had the line bunching problem so far. I was able to horse two 5 pound bass in so far but you notice the lack of cranking strength. I ran mono on it for a while and it seemed to rough up the line quick(cheap line) then I switched to braid.
  5. I picked one up also a month ago. Their handle aren't great easy to replace. Its made of a strange plastic that gives it a hollow feeling. Has a spot on (perfect) anti reverse. Casts very well. The lifting hood and twing is a little gimicky but I really like the real alot. I changed the handle with a bearing supported knob handle from an older reel. I enjoy the 3d breaking. It works real well with braid. For the price it is a fun reel that bombs certain lures really well. To me it feels like the line kinda pinches occasionally during re engagement in the twing. This seems to have corrected itself over time may have been a small imperfection. If I could, call me crazy, I would buy more. Also would like the t3. They are great gimmick reels that I found myself really enjoying. I got the 8.1 ratio and was rippin in a chatterbait, it made it really chatter cause of the reels zaion material(plastic polymer I think). Aside from all that I still really like the reel.
  6. Have you fished the mg and or the premier? Just wondering from your experience. I was impressed with the mg. They are definitely two different reels. My friend has several high end quantums and I agree about the qc issues but the mg seems different somehow. I'm assuming it's the weight. Everything about it seemed solid. No handle backplay, knobs were tight, drag was smooth spool weight seemed low. Im guessing because it had good start up considering he had the tension knob tight and and breaks on three. Also there wasn't any in and out play in the gearing. What quality control issue have you come across in the quantums? The few I have used have been a little odd to dial in considering I'm used to little tension and breaking. Not sure what their flaw is perhaps their line guide? Maybe their hybrid bearings? They have polymer races could they have trouble with hard repeated casting? I may be over thinking it but I'm very curious.
  7. That last line is classic! I do use big game but I'm just trying to save money. But that is a good one. To the pickerel problem, talk about having your cake and eating it too. Thats a tough one but I would try short leader or the do make wire like leader line you can tie. I have forgotten what is was called but we used it for musky fishing and it wad a limp wire you could put a loop not in.
  8. Your spool I believe spins on three bearings. One inside the palming side plate. Open it put a drop more or less in the center groove in the bearing. It will work itself around when you spin the spool after reassembly. The next bearing is where the spool shaft enters the gearing add a drop on the center groove. The last bearing is under your tension cap. Do the same and reset your tension cap to the proper tension. Always be careful not to allow any loose parts to drop out. Sometimes the washer in the tension cap may pop out. This washer can also use a dab of oil. Some, I do, also very lightly grease the very ends of the the spool shaft. Just a smidge. Not absolutely necessary and some people don't because grease tends to get into the bearings and make them spin less. Similarly too much oil or dirt. Too much oil and the bearings have to push a wave, so to speak, of oil. You could also Google how to maintain a shimano baitcaster. Welcome to baitcasting this is just the tip of the iceberg with making them operate at there best. Don't overdoe anything and always take your time when working on them and you'll be very pleased with it.
  9. A baitcaster definitely keeps it interesting. They are great when making a lot if casts, cranking abd winding covering water. With practice they are more efficient. They make fishing more fun and you look like a professional using them. Im kinda kidding but when you're experienced with one it does make you more confident ands helps to make hundreds of casts. This is kinda what it takes to catch them. I was watching facts of fishing tv show,. They break down the amount of casts to the amount of fish caught. This show was like 857 casts to 12 fish caught. This can be what it takes many times and using a baitcaster can make it easier to do in many circumstances. I truly enjoying tossing them and all too often when I am just casually fishing I call It casting practice. Making tons of casts in the same spot. Many times I have been rewarded with fish almost as if they became curious in time, came over and hit my lure. If you're also a hunter they are similar to your favorite rifle. You learn to care for it, sight it in , make sure it's in good working order so you do succeed. Gives you a better sense of pride in your accomplishments. Aaahh just use a spinning real once and a while to mix it up a bit! Tails up!
  10. If you need to send it to DVT. It does sound like a worn or missing part.
  11. The bearings the spool ride on need the most attention. If you make a lot of casts that one day a week and its hot out. Those spool bearings may require a vey small amount of oiling. The lightest drop occasionally. Dont over due it. If your reel seems a little off and your line isn't too roughed up, your bearings may need a drop. I m notorious for overdoing it but I prefer not to run them dry. Use good oil like hot sauce or ardent. Those I'm familiar with and work well. I favor the quantum hot sauce but don't own any right now. Occasionally I borrow some. It seems to allow greater bearing speed. This can be a hindrance too without proper spool control via breaking mechanically or manual thumb control. With hot sauce you really don't wanna over due it cause it can fling out and get on the spool causing it to rotate improperly. The ardent oil seeems a little more forgiving but not much. I like the hot sauce even more in colder weather. Not sure it matters but it seems more temperature friendly. I have heard here on the forums people like Tsi321 or 301 oil. One has a solvent(321 I think). I haven't tried it but I can't own it all as much as I would like. Others swear by sticking to reel specifications and using oil brand specific. Shimano with Shimano oil. Im sure it works well. Keeping the bearings clean and properly oiled makes the reel work it's best. There are links at the top of the forum that will help you also, good fishing and tight lines to ya.
  12. Looking for constructive thoughts on the two baitcasters. I own the premier gen 3 and really enjoy it. A friend has a quantum tournament mg. I used it briefly today and thought it was a really well made reel. It cast well and doesn't feel loose at all. Might buy one or another revo. Any input would be great.
  13. Thank DVT good temporary solution. Very much appreciated.
  14. Thanks for the info. How much can that little clip cost?
  15. During some reel maintenance I lost the non-handle sideplate bearing retention spring( or clip). My question is can I still use the reel safely without it? It still works and I'm hoping it is ok to use until I get the part. Will it damage the bearing or something if I cast it without it?
  16. Add weight to a 1/2 oz with a big split shot between the skirt and trailer. Pinch onto the hook shaft with a little super glue. Seems to work for me.

    Frogging

Im from Pennsylvania and I want to get into frog fishing. Can someone tell me good retrieves and lures to use. Im having trouble walking the frog with a booyah pad crusher, and there are no takers. Can I just reel it in slow and steady, twich it in? Anyone have lures or retrieves that are successful?
  19. What is the difference between ardent reel lube and there oil? What are each used for?
  20. Yeah it's hard to wait when you want something. Those big stores are getting a little long in the tooth. Go wit tw. Wish I could help but that price matching thing always seems to have some loophole when I try. Btw I got a t3 at tw and despite some bad reviews I like it especially with good braid. Gotta change the handle though. I put an old bps reel handle on it(one bushing one bearing) now I really enjoy the reel (don't be afraid to push the price matching issue though always worth a try)
  21. My stx (3)has back play, more after I have lubed it.you notice it more when running lures that you impart a lot of stop and go action to. I still really like the reel.
  22. Its seems to be the whole gen3 line is that way. I don't like it either. I would like to find a fix also. I had a Daiwa zillion that way also. You would think these high end reels would have a solid anti reverse. I read somewhere it was an engineering issue they are more durable or corrosion resistant.
  23. Might help or not... Sometimes the nut holding the rotor on is just a hair too tight. The big half inch nut at the base of the shaft. I have taken them apart and sometimes overtighten it. Gotta back it off a little but not so much the rotor wobbles.
  24. I was having issues before but now I do need to add more breaking. I'm used to running the tension break loose on my Stx. The new breaking may not work as well that way? (abu variable breaks)
