  1. I'm very confident with six pound mono Sufix elite. I took my biggest bass this year on it from a kayak. I'm wondering if moving down below six will increase my chances of getting bites from the larger bass. I have two books from the 70s or early 80s, Lunkers Love Nighcrawlers and Slider Fishing and both books are fans of light line. Charlie Brewer said he used 4 pound mono the most and the rest of the time 6 pound and I think maybe even 2 pound sometimes. I have five pound Maxima Ultragreen on one of my reels and I'll be honest - it does feel a little too light to me. I can actually break it if I have gloves on and pull hard. I've not tried that with my Sufix six pound mono but I'm pretty sure I would have a tough time and I doubt I could break my Sufix 8 pound mono elite. I Texas rig most of the time and have done it pretty succesfully with eight and six pound mono. But this five pound Maxima seems a little too light to Texas rig with. Maybe instead of experimenting with lower line size I should try different six pound line? I really fear P-Line Floroclear but I will admit I did catch a lot of bass when I was using 8 pound. Maybe I'll try their six pound line.
  2. I agree on cutting the field down. I'm not a big fan of tournament fishing but I do follow it some. I've only been fishing for three years and my favorite tournament fishermen have become my favorite from watching MLF and not Bassmaster tournaments. There are just too many in the Bassmaster tournaments.
  3. I'm getting more and more confident. I'm wetting my lines more and slowly cinching them down.
  4. To be more clear - if you have 4 pound mono and you have fluorocarbon that is equal in line diameter to the 4 pound mono, is that fluorocarbon stronger or weaker? To be even more clear - if I'm going to fish 4 pound line, do I want to use 4 pound mono or 4 pound fluorocarbon?
  5. Senko Lover, when you fish senkos, do you use weights or go weightless?
  6. Is 4 pound fluoro stronger than 4 pound mono?
  7. Lets say I want start using 4lb mono or fluorocarbon or copolymer line and only use soft plastic worms/lizards. What kind of hooks would you use, what kind of weight, and what exact soft plastic would you use if you were going to use 4lb or 5lb or even 2lb for bass? I'm talking about big bass too, not baby small bass. The five strip pits I fish at here in Indiana are frustrating me. Looking back, I think I've had my best success on six pound line. I've been using eight, ten pound, and twelve pound fluoro leader but have not had much success catching large bass. I'm hoping focusing on six and four pound line will increase the number of large bass I catch (which stands at 1 this season). Thanks!
  8. I don't understand this. This happened on a lake here in Indiana. http://www.wbiw.com/local/archive/2015/05/boat-capsizes-on-lake-lemon-one-man-dies.php So a sixteen foot flat bottom boat capsized from the wake of a larger pontoon boat. None of the three guys had on life jackets. One died. How does a sixteen foot boat capsize from the wake of a pontoon boat? I have a Ride 115 kayak that I would put up against he wake of any boat on any lake in Indiana. How does a sixteen foot flat bottom boat capsize from a Pontoon boat? I don't own a pontoon but Iv'e been on a few the last few years and I don't think I've ever seen a pontoon go fast. So, were the three guys standing all on one side? I know accidents happen but those guys don't sound very smart.
  9. Championship round is on CBS.
  10. You are correct, it has taken the fishing world by storm. It's a cool and fun little rig. Also works for stocked trout.
  11. I don't have a problem with people asking the same questions over and over again. I was new once and probably asked the same questions others did. Also, this is a discussion board about bass fishing, so why not ask all your questions here? I don't really like it when people tell other people to use the search function. I don't like it when I ask questions on forums and someone says "You ever hear of Google?". I find those kind of remarks rather jerky and they can go go jump off a bridge.
  12. I bought a Sims Sun Gator over the winter to help protect my face (also where a wide brim hat) and so far I really like it. I also bought two Hanes Cool DRI sun block long sleeve shirts for $7.00 each over the winter and I've been wearing them while out on my kayak and I like them so far. I just bought a pair of Gander Mountain hiking pants to use too. They are supposed to be SPF rated and are thin. I got all these cloths for when I go kayak fishing.
  13. Next to soft stick baits and plastic worms, lizards are one of my favorite spring time lures. I can't believe the local Gander Mountain only carries one brand of lizards, Zoom lizards. The last three or four times I've been there I've looked for lizards besides Zoom and found nothing. No Yum lizards, no Berkley lizards, no Strike King lizards, no other lizards but a few packs of Zoom. But they do have tons of flipping creature bait lures which I don't use much and I've never caught a bass on on. It's really pathetic how they are pushing those creature baits and of course crank baits but hardly any lizards. I don't have anything against Zoom lizards, I have a lot of them and used them today bank fishing with success. But I would like to have see some lizards from other companies. Walmart is just as bad. I like to Texas rig my lizards on eight or six pound mono.
  14. This is the only video you need to watch if you want to learn about the real nature of baitcasters. It's a classic. And don't pay attention to the guy talking but the guy in back.
  15. What size of line are you using? I love throwing Yum-Dingers on eight pound Sufix mono line with a 3/0 wide gap hook on a spinning reel. That is my main bass fishing set up. Soft stick baits are so effective for me that I'm considering trying an experiment in 2016 - only use soft stick baits the whole year plus lizards and that's it. That's how much confidence I have in soft stick baits. When I say soft stick baits I'm talking about Yum-Dingers, Stick-Os, Senko's, and also soft stick baits with paddle tails like the Strike King Rage Cut R worm.
  16. Welcome to the world of real life baitcasters! No, you probably are not the problem. The problem is baitcasters in general. They all are pretty much lame compared to the effective spinning reel. Spinning reels work for the fisherman, they work and work very good. Baticasters on the other hand make a slave out of the fisherman. You have to pick the right line, the right rod, the right lure weight, the right lure aerodynamic (how it flies though the air), the right cast, you can't cast too hard or to light, etc... Remember, all the tournament fishermen on TV have twelve or more rods rigged up ready to go. They have the right rod with the right line for the lure. Plus TV usually does not show them dealing with a backlash (sometimes they do). Plus they have a nice big area to cast from. But, if you do want to learn how to use one then go for it. Take your time. I would focus on one type of lure (like jigs or crank baits) and buy a rod specially for that style of lure and buy line specifically for that baitcaster, rod and lure. I bought a rod specifically for crank baits for my one baitcaster. Yeah, it works, sometimes. But it's still lame and does not work as good as my spinning reels. After two or three outings this spring in my kayak with my baitcaster I've retired it again for the rest of the year, just like I did last year. I've come to realize it's not me and hardly ever me, it's the design of the baitcaster, it's a stupid awkward design surpassed by the spinning reel.
  17. I don't know if this rod would be good for drop shots but I really like my Fenwick hmg spinning rods. I have two of them and they are $100.00
  18. What is a good low cost auto-inflate for a kayak fisherman?
  19. I can't wait to see the new Avengers film. I think this film is the official start of the summer movie season even though we are in spring. I can't wait! Also I can't wait for the rest of the summer movies particularly Ant Man. So is anybody going to see Avengers? I'm going, probably next week. I am reading some so-so not so good reviews about this movie but still it looks fun.
  20. So what colors are you all using?
  21. I have some Plano double sided boxes but not those. I'll have to look for those the next time I go to the store.
  22. I really like my Flambeau boxes. I think tho to lighted up I will have to start throwing different brands of worms in the same compartment. I don't mind though, I don't think the bass will mind. When I kayak fish I've been taking three soft plastic boxes and one hard bait box and one small tackle box. I want scale that down to one soft plastic box, one small tackle box, and maybe the hard bait box. I don't switch lures much when I'm kayak fishing or bank fishing.
  23. I wish they made containers specifically for plastic worms and soft stick baits. I want something that is double sided and has about ten to fifteen narrow columns but each column is deep enough to put in six to ten plastic worms/stick baits/lizards and also room enough to get a finger or two inside to pull the worms out. I've noticed with most Plano and Flambeau boxes, there is a lot of wasted space that could be used better if they designed it better.
  24. I'm also on the search for the perfect tackle set up and trying to find a way to reduce what I bring on my kayak and while bank fishing. Some times I think I will have better luck finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.
  25. Take a look at KVD casting a crank bait. The guy reels it in fast and as soon as it's in he casts it out again wasting no time. I can't believe how fast he is going. What's he actually doing though, covering as much water as possible by going so fast? Is that the main reason he's reeling and casting so fast? He's like a robot, cast after cast. Cool footage.
