I have a very few amount of swimbaits that I use on occasion and one of the things I have also noticed is that they usually don't get hung up as much as you think and when they do they are very easy to get unhung with a plug knocker. So you are paying $60+ for a bait that can last many years of fishing is a pretty good deal.
Any Spinning Reel can hold a good amount of 20lb braid. 20lb mono, copoly, fluorocarbon... no bass spinnining reel will do the job that well IMO. With those lines of that size you should be using a baitcaster.
You can get a Chronarch CI4 on Japan Lure Shop for $220. I got my CI4 at the end of the season last year and maybe used it 3 times so I was not totally experienced with it yett. I had said that I liked it more than my Curado I's but I was not sure if it was worth the extra money. However I have a lot more experience with it now and I must say I think it is definitely worth the extra money. My only wish for the reel is if the offered a few more reel speeds such as a 5 gear and maybe another 7 gear reel but with an IPT of 30". I love 7 gear reels but the 7:6:1 with the 32" IPT is just a tad a little faster than I like
Probablly is a bad lemon. I got my CI4 at the end of last year and had only been able to use it for maybe 3 outings. I had said that I liked it more than my Curado I but I did not think it was worth $100 more. However after using it since ice off of this year and getting more experience with it I do think it is worth the extra $100 (you can find it for much cheaper than retail though)
IPG is a 5 gear ratio reel while the IHG is the 7 gear ratio.
Personally I only use 7 gear reels unless I'm deep cranking in which then I would use the 5 gear.
I spend more on rods but I have a few reels that are more expensive than the rod. I mainly own Dobyns but St. Croix has a soft spot in my heart since they were the rods I used when I used to fly fish. For reels I use only Shimano however they are mainly curados and chronarchs.
I'm actually thinking of selling my Curado E's and Chronarch E's and replace them with the Curado I's and Chronatch CI4s since they've impressed me so much!
Heavy braid is mainly used to help pull up cover. For instance when punching you use braid because you hook a 3lb bass but bring up 20+ pounds of weeds with it. Same thing with brush it helps you muscle the fish out to get him out of that cover.
Also since braid has no stretch it makes the fight more fun becasue you can feel that fish thrashing and shaking its head more.
I'd finesse fish dropshot, split shot rig, shakey heads, ned rigs, and tubes. I would use the smallest weight possible and use very small baits like a 4.5" roboworm in natural colors.
734 is the best option. Dobyns over rates their rods, a 4 power is a medium heavy instead of a heavy and a 3 power is a medium instead of a medium heavy.
