  1. Sure wish I had an answer. Thought about hitting the Savannahs in the kayak after seeing some pix on Instagram from Stuart Angler. Been itching to get out but the couple of times I did I didnt have any luck. (on foot) Cant even get the little ones to bite in the backyard canal. Just turtles.
  2. Thanks for the tips, I hope to get out a bit this week to try them out. I haven't had any luck with jigs so I don't try them enough, I know stupid but I have been ok with senkos when I do get out.
  3. So I'm trying to take advantage of some time off and do some fishing. Every day has been roughly the same, bluebird skies and some wind or alot of wind. I'm in the treasure coast area, on foot for now. Fishing ponds and canals. I haven't had much time to fish because of work, now that I do I'm not sure where to start. My confidence technique has been senkos, t-rigged. I caught a couple dinks on a fly rod messing around with poppers but that's it so far.
  4. Had a little luck yesterday messing around in the canal behind the house. By Thornhill and Airoso. landed 3/4 1-2 pounders. Nothing spectacular but it was better than working.
  5. Nice update. Been a while since I fished freshwater because I broke my leg. Been hoping to get out there soon. I did catch one small one a few weeks ago in my canal, it hit a watermelon/red flake stick-o hard enough I thought I was snagged. The canal used to be productive, even had a couple of big ones until they sprayed for weeds. Now it's work to get anything. Mostly just turtles.
  6. Nice! Most of my fish have been caught on Senkos or Senko like worms. Especially in those colors. I have the same rod and I love it for everything but very light plastics. I use wide gap worm hooks. How do those circle hooks work for you?
  7. Thanks from me too.
  8. Managed to catch one on a Storm chug bug tonight. Went out with the dog and heard a splash, grabbed the rod and hooked up. Nothing huge and only my third bass at night but it got me out of the foul mood I was in. PIcked up some bluegill colored creme swimbaits and a KVD crankbait to try but there's grass and hair algae in my canal so i do alot more weeding than anything. Can barely fish with a jig or crankbait at all. (Unless I'm doing something wrong)
  9. I haven't been anywhere but the canal behind the house lately but thats the same thing I am seeing. I guess I haven't figured out their pattern completely. I'm not even catching small ones anymore. Been planning on venturing out toward Tradition but my lack of success has slowed me down. I thought I had it sort of figured out. I tried senkos (my go-to) spooks, flukes, spinners, frogs on top, zoom frogs, rat-l-traps, a jig, you name it... Only thing I haven't tried is fishing somewhere else.
  10. I need to get off the fence and start using the jigs I bought. Senkos stopped working in my canal a few weeks ago, maybe a jig will. My biggest issue is all the hair algae (slop) where I have been fishing. Guess I need to figure that out or fish elsewhere. Thanks for the tips and inspiration.
  11. This happened to me today. I have decided to just throw frogs for a bit til I get familiar with them. Got a couple of little strikes and yanked it away from them before they tasted it. Big hit, fish swimming with the frog, tried to set the hook but the drag was light. Guess I need to be more patient and check my settings next time. Totally different bite than senkos or flukes.
  12. Another one from last weekend. Switching to frogs, going to see what I can learn. Got a couple of strikes today and had one on for a few seconds but I guess I messed up the hook set cause he spit it out after a short fight.
  13. I fish the canal behind my house all the time, mainly just the 75' right behind the house. I call it the practice canal because I taught myself how to cast a fly rod and a baitcaster, how to fish flukes, senkos and lots of other firsts there. I have caught a bunch of little and even tiny fish there. I have learned where to look based on conditions and lots of other stuff. Tonight, I got home and figured I'd try a few baitcaster casts into the wind, something I have struggled with the last few weeks. first cast, dropped a senko at the edge of some grass where I got bites the other day. Tap Tap thud. Thought it was a dink caught up in some canal slop again until it hauled ass into the middle of the canal. Biggest bass I have caught back there. It puts the "if you're catching a bunch of little ones, there aren't any big ones" theory out of my head for a bit.
  14. found this on the canoe outpost page. I'm going to give my old standards a try, white flukes and watermelon/red senkos first. Depending on how fast the water is. Looks like I might be fishing in the rain.
  15. I'm headed across the state to do a little paddling trip. Staying at Brownville park. I have paddled the river there twice but not fished. Any tips for me? I figured I'd bring a rod or two so I can sneak out by myself for a bit.
  16. Hmm, tagging along. I'm interested too. I have tried to establish patterns but I need work on my catching skills first.
  17. Stopped at a spot on the way home and nothing. I was in a hurry and a kid had just tore all through the lake in a jonboat right as I arrived so I didnt try too hard. All this talk about baitcasters motivated me to pick up a new rod for mine. I picked up a decent one I think, took it out back to the practice canal. After a few casts to get used to it I managed to catch a decent sized fish for this canal. Caught him on a houdini senko clone from BPS. First bass after dark and on a brand new rod. I think I might skip lunch and fish tomorrow.
  18. I stopped by on the way home today. With about 10 minutes of sunlight left I figured I'd get a couple of casts in. I threw a watermelon/red senko into that pond behind gate 2 a few times and managed to land a little one. Plenty of activity and hits but I messed up a couple of times. (need better hooks or some patience) I had a nice one on, not a monster, but it got free while I was wrapped in the lily pads. I think I'm going to bring my canoe out there, just don't want to meet any gators the hard way. They grow them pretty big out that way.
  19. Dad and I fish together as much as possible. For a while now we have been saltwater fly fishing. We're not great but it is fun. He only fishes using fly rods. I end up fishing with a spinning rod usually throwing soft plastics like flukes. I discovered this site, applied some of the tips and now I feel like I usually have a shot at catching bass. I am dreaming of heading out to Lake O and giving it a shot. Thing is, I don't want my Dad left without a chance for success. Last time we went it was africa hot, we almost got run over, got stuck in hydrilla etc... I'm itching to give it another try now that I know my boat and maybe how to fish a little. When would be the best time to go and as a bonus question, what flies should I get for us? I tied up a bunch of deerhair sliders a while ago and the bass in my canal liked them, what else works? I know I'll pick up some poppers too. I think I'm also going to bring him a spinning rig, maybe I can convince him to try. I don't care as long as he has fun and maybe catches something.
  20. I caught my biggest bass ever on Christmas Eve and it had a similar sore. It was on the saltwater side of a spillway in Palm City so I figured that was why. The fish was also slow but I attributed that to the cold water.
  21. Funny, you've got about a year on year on me in Jupiter. I have lived elsewhere but I consider Jupiter my hometown. I managed to catch a couple of tiny bass there in the few attempts I made. I considered dropping my canoe in so I could fish the other sides. I can imagine the sides accessible by foot are fished regularly. You can only get to about 1/4 of it on foot. The rest is swamp or gator country. (5' tall reeds and grass) I also nearly had a heart attack there. Pro tip: Just because you can no longer see the huge gator doesn't mean he's gone. Turns out they do not like having a fly popper dragged across their forehead. When that guy jumped he was 6' away in the lily pads and I nearly peed myself. That ended my day.
  22. I am sitting here killing time in the office, using Google Earth to scout out some places. I work in West Jupiter and live in PSL. I have stopped by the canals in the Hungryland and made some attempts at catching fish but nothing more than a couple of tiny fish. I am sure the spots I fished are the most heavily fished ones because they are so easy to get to. I didn't venture very far last time but I see there are a couple of miles worth of canals. I saw what I am guessing was a snakehead the last time but I couldn't get close enough to see it. Has anyone fished any of these canals and caught anything decent? I am trying to find some spots I can hit on the way home from work without too much hassle. I see a couple of possibilities like the square pond near the old indiantown rd trail. Just wondering if anyone has tried these places. Not looking for honeyholes just stories. Thanks, John.
  23. I stopped by last night and again today, wanted to check out the frogs and jigs.. Came here to remind myself of what I wanted so I wouldn't go crazy. Almost walked out of there with a lime green kids fly rod just for fun.
  24. I am glad to hear I'm not the only one who feels this way. Caught a Jr. in the canal behind my house. Crushed the barb and was able to get him back in the water safely. Missed his eye by this >< much. Only after I was done did I realize I had been talking to him the whole time. Neighbors were looking at me funny. "hang in there buddy we'll get this out in a sec.... quit wigglin, it only hurts for a sec..." and so on. Oh well. They eat the turtles in the canal so I end up lookin at them weird too.
  25. Resources to look at: http://forums.iboats.com/boat-repair-restoration-408/ www.bateau2.com www.microskiff.com www.thehulltruth.com www.classicmako.com There are rebuild threads everywhere, with various levels of completion and finish quality. I went for a work boat finish, some go to all exotic hardwood and new hardware etc.. Thats up to you.
