  1. Big M - yes, that is very similar to what I want to carve!!!!!!
  2. Thanks Big M - I was thinking of using basswood or cedar and the size and profile of a smlet or ciscoe. All the swimbaits seem too big for smallmouth - and they tend to represent forage like bluegills and trout. I am looking to make a much more subtle swimbait for smallies.
  3. I am a pretty decent carver - carving several wooden decoys - but I've never carved a fishing lure. i know this is a pretty general request, but I want to carve a swimbait for largemouth and I am looking for info regarding where and how to start. Can someone point a newbie lure carver in the right direction. Where can I find pointers, guides or tips and techniques. Thanks ever so much!
  4. What about using the same dye that lure makers use to tint soft plastics when they pour them. Couldn't one dip a paint brush in that and use it???? Thanks
  5. I would like to custom paint some soft plastic baits like Zoom flukes. I know about the Dip It stuff but the color choices are very limited. I am looking instead for a way to take a thin paint brush and paint on a lateral line and different colors using some different dyes and hues. I was in a huge chain Craft store and they literally had hundreds of different types of paints, dyes and permanent markers for things like porcelain and paper and china in a huge variety of colors and hues. Can anyone tell me if one or more of these things will work on soft plastic lures and if so, what is the best one(s) to buy. Thanks ever so much.
  6. I've been having goo dluck using soft plastic baits rigged wacky style using the Falcon type weedless wacky hooks. But man are they expensive and I keep gettign bit off by northern pike when I am fishing in the weeds. I've been thinking that one might be able to fashion weedless wire guards quite easily and to wrap them on standard EWG hooks. Has anyone tried doing this. Any tips and advice? Also where can one purchase the thin wire needed to make the wire guards. Thank you!
  7. Thanks - Senkosam where do you order the Colorite? Direct from the company? I did an internet search and can't find hardly anone that sells it. Thanks
  8. Oh, yes, I meant to add one other thing in my post above. I've tried the Spike it dye stuff but I don't like the awful garlic smell that I think masks a heavy "industrial" odor. I'd much rather use something with more color options like the dyes and colors worm and grub makers use. Thanks
  9. A question for some of the more experienced hands who pour their own soft plastic worms ans grubs. If I buy small bottles of the worm dyes can I paint them on my lures to creat custom colors. I am not so much interested in making my own soft plastics as customising those I buy. So, can I simply use the dye with a paint brush????
  10. Earthworm - I read with interest your post about making a brass chatterbait. I was wondering if you could explain how you attach the "blade" to the jig. I think you posted that you don't use a split ring and that has me confused. I want to try making some small ones for smallmouth bass - but I am confused about how you attach the blade to the jig. Thanks so much for any and all assistance.
