I used to fish the city pond in a somewhat "affluent" neighborhood. The conversations were pretty good. One time I hit a jogger with a pounder that flew over my head after a Bill Dance hookset. Pleasantries were exchanged and I, uh, did not get her number.
I haven't fished one yet, but it will probably be my next rod unless I stone up for a Mephisto or something stupid.

On topic, rods and reels matching is not always under my control. However, rod socks must match. No exceptions.
36" is a good start. Adjust longer or shorter according to your personal preference. I use a lot of 10 lb Red Label as leader material as it is cheap and doesn't suck.
