So… I’ve never had anything like this happen to me before. I had quite an ordeal landing this one fish lol.
Fishing off this little walkway that runs over a creek that joins two ponds together, I was flipping a jig into the creek when I missed a strike. I followed up with a Texas rigged 7.5 inch green pumpkin culprit worm on a spinning setup with 8lb mono. I made a bad cast over a limb that was hanging inches above the water and got the line wrapped around it.
Before I could reel it in to make a better cast, a 1lber inhaled my lure and got wrapped around another branch. I’m standing there thinking to myself the hook is going to pop off and he’ll be on his way. No such luck, he was stuck there 15 feet down the bank in the middle of the creek. I made my way down to the bank pushing through poison ivy and thinking about the 3 foot long copperhead I saw in that spot a few months back. I get down there and had to use a stick to pull the line towards me and unwrap it before I could lip the fish.
Finally I get to the fish and find out he’s hooked on the gullet. Crap! So I’m crouching over 4 feet of water standing in snake infested poison ivy, working on the fish with my pliers when they slip and fall into the water. Fish in one hand and frantically trying to feel around the bottom with my other, I turn up empty. In the end I was able to cut the line and push the hook out through the gills and revive the fish and watch it swim off.
I called it a day after that and walked away minus my pliers and feeling kinda dumb. At least I saved the fish and my tackle though. It wasn’t funny when it happened, but I thought someone else may get a kick out of it.
