  1. Haven't fished the tatula. But I wont give up my 50es. I've always thought of the tatula with its heavier spool being a better distance caster for heavier baits, whereas, the 50e would be more efficient at lighter baits. Then again I haven't fished the type r Honestly, not very many reels have trouble casting a 3/8oz bait.
  2. Ill stick with mono or fluoro. Diameter determines depth. Good FC if in an abrasive environment.
  3. I skip these about 10 yards under docks with spinning gear. An nrx 803s is a beast for skipping senkos. Use a Stella. For casting. It does not matter! These things are so heavy. 5" senkos weigh about 3/8oz. Any mh or medium rod can cast that heavy of weight with ease. I use FC because its a slack line technique.
  4. I loosen my spool tension up to the point where it no longer moves side to side. Brakes on 0. Mag or centrifugal. My thumb is there the whole time to manage distance and how softly the bait enters. Only time I add mag breaks is while pitch skippin. Really don't overdo it with distance. Good technique will get you that distance. If you try pitching too hard your technique will fault. It should be really free flowing. Eventually you'll be doing it without thinking. A good day pitching on the lake can get hours of good practice. I don't like pitching in the yard because im higher up in my boat.
  5. Very cool. I don't own that specific model. Really curious to hear your impressions of it.
  6. Good choice! Make sure you don't forget to make a review on it. What model did you grab?
  7. GOLD N GREEN. OOOHHHH SHOOT. If people r not using carbon fiber can we please call em out. That's fraud
  8. Yeah that's a huge jump from a caenan. But if you got the money do it. The 4 I have a workhorses. Ive been really hard on them to test durability. So far so good.
  9. Definitely have the reel cleaned professionally first. See how that goes. Next upgrade bearings. Next supertune. You can't undo a supertune. You can undo bearings. Doesn't necessarily cast further, but one can get the same distance with less effort. Also, its not for everyone. Some reels can get too fast. You don't want your thumb to be the only breaking system that works.
  10. Suffix elite for spinning and smaller test. Suffix siege for more abrasive work
  11. Have you even used a curado? It doesn't sound like you have. Speculation does not equal knowledge. The crucial is nice. The spinning rod with full cork is better for spinning. Sensitivity is very subjective. In depends so much on the user that nobody ccan answer this. Go with what feels the best on your reel at the store. Fwiw If I had to chose one that's in this range msrp. Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth. Theres a few rods they manufacture well. If u buy used, you open yourself up to a Dobyns champion, legend tournament, cumara A, imx, recon 1 or 2, etc. Used will get you the best rod but screws up this debate.
  12. Key word searches are much more effective if you look at it from an analytical standpoint. For instance, micro guide would yield better results than micro guides. A better way to search is hit up google and type "site:bassresource.com micro guide" and Jay, I encourage you to check out as many sites as you want for information. Usually quality is better than quantity however. In regards to the topic I believe the most agreeable advantage of those style guides are the weight savings. Every other advantage is debatable. They can also be a nuisance for connection knots and crap getting caught in them. Hybrid guides that are a little smaller than normal are a good compromise.
  13. Looking at your setup, I see three medium powered rods. Any reason you don't have a rod more powerful than MH? Just curious if you fish light cover, or if you feel a MH does the job well enough for you
  14. Jay, I noticed in another thread you posted that you have used this rod for fishing stripers and such with big swimbaits? And you are looking to see if it could fish well for bass fishing? I guess I would need more questions answered. This reel would be out of the price range that you mentioned earlier. So has that price range increased now? Also, what rod do you plan on putting it on? What techniques do you plan on fishing? What weight range do you plan on throwing? I do not feel I can give you accurate information without a little more imput, or some more understanding from my perspective.
  15. Yeah that's tall for his age. I would get something nice he could grow into. That price range you open the doors to a veritas, mojo, vendetta, diesel, ethos, Fenwick ET Smallmouth, and so many others. A rod that seems to be a staple in most people's arsenals are those 6'8'' M/XF spinning rods. Very useful, very versatile. if he grows up and wants a bunch of rods, he will sure hang on to that one. Most what people say comes down to preference. Someone can like rod A over rod B for many different reasons. I am biased towards the Fenwick ET Smallmouth. I've seen them go for $70 at some local places. Its that time of the year stuff goes cheap. If you could grab a M/XF spinning version you or your kid would have a keeper for sure. I use them along side of my megabass rods, when the situation calls. What to look for? A rod made with graphite. A rod that feels balanced and light. The guides are straight. The blank is straight. It comes with a warranty. Make sure you take your reel, mount it to the rod and see how it feels. It should feel good in YOUR HANDS. That usually is what wins people over and gives confidence. What to NOT look for? Graphite ratings, any rod made of glass, any rod that is a graphite composite i.e. an ugly stick. A rod that is all Yellow! Check out the cork too, does it have pitting? how bad is the pitting? What is the reel seat made out of? If you buy used. Check to see if you can sneak a Gen 1 Cumara for $100 bucks. You'll be spoiled. I've seen Avids go for $100 bucks. You can really stretch your money buying used. You are going to want sensitivity. The lighter the rod, the better balanced the rod, the better experience you will have with the rod in my experience. PLEASE DO NOT BUY A ROD/REEL COMBO. Just don't do it, its not worth it, buying separate will get you a much nicer rod. Some may say there are some exceptions at bass pro shops. They do make a good carbonlite rod. But 99% of the time the combo is going to not work out as well.
  16. I would take that money to the bay, the flea market here, craigslist, etc. you can get a $200 reel if your reel patient. Its getting cold, people sell their stuff, less people willing to buy the stuff = cheaper prices. A shimano curado supertuned with abec's I've seen go for $130 tooooooo many times, that would be pretty cool. Or you could get custom parts for a reel you already have.
  17. I go first with the Picasso Bait Ball Extreme. Throw a ton of baits at them. Work it at different depths and different colors. If they don't want that I go with a hard jerkbait. If they dont want that then you are in for a day. Jerkbait is normally the thing that nails them suspended dudes. Find out how they like it, and get one that works to their depth. Anything that puts a bait in the water column has the potential to work. A senko is an obvious one, just takes a while to cover water. You can throw swimjigs, lipless cranks, regular cranks, spinnerbaits, just run it at the depth they are in. My first 2 choices are above though.
  18. So how much are you looking to spend? I think you should go 7 feet. You can always cast sidearm, overhead, underhand, w.e. to get the job done if need be. Your kid should be fine with the ugly stick. A step up would be just about anything though. A lightning rod is not a bad idea, I think 6' is just right. How tall is he?
  19. SEAGUAR MAKES ALL OF THEIR RESINS. THAT IS WHY THEY PRODUCE THE MOST CONSISTENT LINE DIAMETERS OF ALL FLUOROCARBON MANUFACTURERS. THEIR QC IS MEASURED AS THE BEST AT THE MOMENT. THEY GET TO .0001 OF AN INCH CONSISTENCY. SUNLINE SHOOTER, A GREAT LINE IS AT .001 MOST SEAGUAR LINE IS RATED BELOW OTHER LINES IF YOU LOOK AT DIAMETER/BREAKING STRENGTH RATING. INVIZX IS THE BEST HANDLING FC NEXT TO TATSU THAT SEAGUAR MAKES. GOOD BUY
  20. Your 7 year old may have some serious problems with a 7 foot rod. From the shore it helps to be versatile. Sometimes its tough casting a 7 foot rod with limbs n stuff. THO if it is more open a longer rod is optimal. You can cast further, and reach more fish. The president is a good reel for the price. I would probably get two of those unless you want to invest in a higher dollar shimano with line propulsion management or w.e. its called. Not a huge fan of the sahara.it feels too cheap. The president is the best low dollar spinning reel at B&M. You can stretch your money by taking care of these deals online. Brand does not matter unless its a St. Croix. If it is a St. Croix you probably have the best rod ever. On the cheap end I have bought youngsters vendetta's and lightning rods and they still use em, so I guess they are happy. Good choice going spinning for what you are doing! On a better than cheap rod end get a Fenwick Elite Tech Small mouth M/XF. Buy it at a discount. What is ur price range? Your kid should be good with a 6 foot Medium lightning rod.
  21. After two trips with a couple different models. I think they may turn out more like the R series reels than the regular.
  22. The black wild XXH carrot stick.Beast for frogs and a rigs. Cheap too. Don't need to feel it like an expensive dobyns
  23. Yeah in this case he gets a brand new rod for free. Not too bad, especially since this rod dominates any rod out there for sensitivity.
  24. NO I DO NOT LIKE THIS LINE IN THAT TEST. IT IS TOO STIFF. POWERPRO IS NOT AS STIFF I PREFER POWERPRO FOR THAT STRENGTH. THATS WHAT IM SAYING CHALK
