  1. The transition period moving into the spawn is my favorite time to fish LOZ. The big boat wave effect is mitigated by the fact that bass are transitioning to spawning areas, and if you find a good one on a bed it'll likely be in some protected water. If it were me I'd start mid-lake and based on water temp/clarity, run up or down lake from there depending on how you want to fish. Jack Uxa has a wealth of LOZ knowledge and you're going to learn alot. He'll put you on em too no doubt. For bass I'd focus on transition banks with chunk rock leading to gravel flats or south-facing cuts/protected pockets. Carolina rig, swing jig, shaky head, texas rig. Brush hog ready to pitch to any laydown/cover near deeper water. Always good to keep a wacky rig handy too in case things get real warm and the wind dies off. I like to bass fish during the day and then hit rocky banks for crappie in the evenings. If they're starting to spawn they'll come up shallow and get aggressive.
  2. forgot this site blocks fb links. here's a screengrab. reminder to slow down in the fog, guy's lucky he didn't hit somebody.
  3. shad spawn and heavy stain made things pretty simple at LOZ, at least on the lower end. quick day trip with the family didn't give me a chance to cover water, but managed 6 in a few hours pitching a 1/2oz spinnerbait to docks and paralleling seawalls. everything had it choked.
  4. thanks backlashers for leaving some goodins behind a couple saturdays ago. ?
  5. I only fish 30mm-Bagnell when I get down, but I'd run up lake with how cold it's been and look for the warmest water you can find. 35-40 WT around mid lake last I heard. Contrary to popular belief that lake, at least the lower end, can be feast or famine January-early March. My buddy was in a tournament down there last weekend... 10 of 30 boats weighed a fish and Sykora only brought in 10lbs on Saturday I think it was. Jerkbait and A-rig is all I'd throw, and don't be afraid to let that jerkbait soak.
  6. lot of ways to fish a texas rig... only one way to fish a jig in the winter... slow. very slow.
  7. Bite was probably good in most lakes around here last night after the cool rain we got. I'm sure the frog bite didn't suck.
  8. If CC wasn't held at the same tough lake at the same time every year, I'd spill the beans. But since it is, and since this place is full of lurkers...
  9. Yeah I guess my buddy made it pretty obvious who we were fishing for
  10. fished corporate challenge this past saturday, we were the only boat out of +100 companies to weigh more than one bass. weighed 3 for 9.24 anchored by this smithville giant my buddy caught up front. that lake is tough but it’s got biggins.
  11. Yeah I’d have no motivation to fish it if corporate challenge wasn’t held there every year.
  12. here’s proof that multiple keepers exist in smithville. all it took was 3 to win our company fishoff, most of everybody else went the crappie route thinking it would make for a heavier sack. we’ll be back next weekend for corporate challenge but will need to do better to beat the field.
  13. Yeah you're preaching to the choir here. Although those girls are just as big if you catch em off a bed before they pop. Males coming up in numbers to make beds, males around beds waiting for females to come up, and females on beds are all different parts of a sequence that depends on stable weather and water levels. My money says you're at least 3 weeks from seeing girls on em, in bigger water at least. Can't speak for the ponds tho.
  14. Be ready to wait longer than that.
  15. 30lb big game mono main line, 1oz lead weight, big swivel, 12” 30lb leader, 6/0 gamakatsu octopus circle hook, cut or live bluegill or green sunfish. I prefer cut green sunfish, they’re more oily and have thicker shoulders. Have caught lots of 20lb+ blues and flatheads off the dock down at LOZ doing that.
  16. Preach! Also not helped by the growing trend of companies offering people discounts/free swag in exchange for some hashtags, has alot of guys convinced they're pro now
  17. gonna buck the norm here, leave the spinning gear at home... it will serve you better to learn on a baitcaster as that's what you'd rather rely on to winch a slaunch out of heavy cover, not a senko or tube on 8lb test. texas rigged double wide beaver, 4/0 ewg, 1/8oz weight w/ bobber stop and you're in business. spool up some 16# fluoro (don't fully load the spool), dial in your reel so that it's as fast as possible, and get after it!
  18. Anybody here been using these on their cranks with success? Thinking about swapping out some stock #4 squarebill hooks with these in #2, from what I've seen on the shelf they look a little smaller. I like the look of the short shank and oshaughnessy bend without pointing back in to the shank like triple grips, but a little leary of them being as strong as advertised with the smaller diameter. http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Gamakatsu_Aaron_Martens_TGW_Nano_Finesse_Treble_Hook/descpage-NFH.html
  19. Tried but couldn't figure out how to!! ?
  20. i didnt either, probably why i was mixed up. meant 705C. http://dobynsrods.com/rod/705c/
  21. Anybody own one of these sticks? Thoughts? Can't find one locally to hold, and TW doesn't seem to carry this specific one, but I have held the 704 and it was a bit whippier than I'd hoped. Jigs, swing jigs, and frogs would be the main applications. Sticking with 7' as it's the length that seems to skip best for me. Thanks!
  22. Just a little levity, no disrespect here. Melverns been so blown out by this forum in the past few years, I assumed every Tom Dick and Harry in KC knew about it. If I had the means I'd make the trip to Perry, sounds like it's been fishing bigger lately but can't speak from experience. I'd probably start out cranking and dragging a big shaky head on, and around main lake points. Good luck!
