  1. MY FISRT HOT THREAD, altuogh I also hate "thinly veiled commercial," if it teaches me something I'm happy. If it weren't for outdoor TV, I never would've learned of GULP, Rapala, and KVD cranks, which altogether admittedly catch most of my fish, but i learned to use them from the shows where they were advertised. Thank your lucky stars for bassresource, where you can learn and read reviews of products hawked at you on TV.
  2. As much as I love outdoor television, I have my fair share of pet peeves. number two on the list, is when a pro dismisses an impressive fish as small. Perhaps it is because I'm in Northern IL, and up here bass grow slow, maybe it's due to me fishing from the bank, but when I catch a 2 pounder from shore i'm more than satisfied, a three pounder means I'm ecstatic, and a 4 pounder makes my heart skip a beat. I certainly do not however dismiss a fiesty lil uno pounder as a nuisance. My number one, and perhaps more justified pet peeve, is when somebody makes a bad/ lame shot a celebrates. for example watching whitetail freaks yesterady, the chick gut shot a buck and proceeded to squeal, celebrate and preach of her good shot. This is nearly as bad as some "pro," who was knife hunting boars; the dogs grounded him, and the guides took his legs and immobilized the boar, then said pro proceeded to stab the boar in the lung and talk about how hard this quest was. So come on my fellow outdoorsman, delve into your inner david e. petzal curmudgeon, and vent your complaints and pet peeves.
  3. This is a forum on bass behavoir right now: are they bedded or cruisin the shallows, are they agressive or suspended on ledges, etc... I'm in illinois and i've had a little luck on ledes and points due to the fluctuating weather we've been having, but, given that said weather is stabilizing, my luck is going to schtako. So, tell us where you are, whats lures have been workin, the bass' behavoir, and where the hell you've been findin 'em!!!
  4. I would go w/ a flouro leader slightly lighter than the braid. For pretty heavy stuff, I have a spool of 20lb braid w/ a flouro leader
  5. I admit, I woefully underuse soft plastics, most likely due to my having taught myself to fish at a young age. I needed a fast, more interesting way to fish. (I was ten and got bored easily.) Now however, I would like to better utilize them. When do you use soft jerkbaits vs paddletails vs soft craws vs worms vs tubes. Which ones are used for used for what situation as opposed to others. I fish most w/ a t-rig. Which do you rig in what ways for what circumstances? Mostly I use jerkbaits in more open spaces, above and around the edges of weedbeds/stumps. I use soft craws to drag/yo yo along the bottom. I use tubes in heavier cover, and worms for smaller spaces where short casts are necessary (I fish from the bank) i.e. through lily pads, heavy cover, and bluffs/steep areas where vertical presentations are used. I tend to use paddletails as an alternative to jerkbaits, especially in muddier water. I have no experience w/ grubs, or really any soft plastics outside of these listed. Also, which are better search baits and which are fished slow (oviously the got worm there) and how? Rereading this I feel like I total novice. So, I guess this is soft plastic 101.Thanks in advance.
  6. also when to use floating sticks like the rapala original floater?
  7. I am quite cleless as to which is better for bass. I have never understood why a tight wiggle action crankbait could be more effection than the alternative and so I throw quite a few stickbaits. Which is better for what situation and why
  8. WHich do you prefer tight or wide action crankbaits and when...and in what cover. How would you tell in store the action a crankbait would have. I have never seen why somebody would want a tight action and as such i gravitate more towards stickbaits than shad crank unless they are sharebills. What aboud you?
  9. THat depends, has any body heard of ohhh i don't know: Bill heavey, David e. Petzal, Bill Heavey, Phil Bourjaly, Bill Heavey, Bill Heavey, Bill Heavey, Bill Heavey, or Bill Heavey !!!!!!!!!!!!
  10. I personally love weed beds in summer, and logs/blowdowns in spring. Rocks are great in early morning and anytime during spring due to their absorbtion of warmth/radiation. when it comes to choosing in summer between weed beds and logs, indecision reigns. What about you? what cover do you favor based on weather and time of year.
  11. I meant to also add weedless spoons into that question.
  12. Which do you prefer and for what situations, lipless crankbaits or spinnerbaits.
  13. beer and fishing aren't exactly mutually exclusive I pickup up a pack of havoc fatty craws (watermelon w/ red flakes) I've been wondering if they were good.
  14. my smallest fish was a minnow I caught when my bait slipped off the hook while panfishing. no pics, but the little guy was feisty enough to strike an unbaited hook.
  15. it was a little Colorado blade off a beetle spin, so it spun, but for really muddy water I might use an indianna blade or big Colorado blade. I was aking a question but I guess I got caught up in the excitement. So, officially, what are all your guys' favorite soft plastic and how do you rig 'em n fish 'em
  16. I have never been much of a worm guy, just was never good for it. I have always harbored an affinity however, for soft plastic jerkbaits and crawfish imitating baits. Recently, while fishing in a shallow farm pond I came upon an area with a plethora of shallow, cut, close to shore trees. I considered running cranks through it but bass were holding to thick sideways branches half of which were sticking out of the water. The bass in said pond do not have a distinct favor towards spinnerbaits. I figured I should fish a soft plastic jerkbait, but the water was so muddy. Low and behold in my tackle box I stumbled upon the answer. I took a blade off a beetle spin, attatched it to the hook of a Texas rigged, gulp smelt, a caught a ton in no time. This is now hands down my favorite rig for shallow muddy, snag rich cover where only a jerkbait will do.
  17. I have almost no experience w/ buzzbaits, (though I do keep skitter props,) and decent experience with zara's. I may not be the most accurate caster but I do like to work poppers by hard edges i.e. topwater weeds, shallow submerged brush, and have a tendency to use zara spooks over shallow grass and coontail. I swim in a lake before I fish it, since I don't have a bass boat with gadgets, this lets me explore the geography of the pond and actually see where bass hang out. They are really bold around snorkelers. MY point being, I've learned that in thick shallow weedbeds I know there are travel routes, this is what I typically reserve a zara for
  18. The Walmarts around here have nifty $20 matzuo M action spinning combos, or some 2 ball bearing reel and 6'6" ugly stik would be great. After a few particularly conductive trips, provided you have taught him more about tackle so this won't be so overwhelming, plan a "trip" to your nearest cabelas. I've turned a cou[le friends onto fishing and it never fails to amuse me, the look when their eyes glaze over after that first step into cabelas or BP. No, the other BP. BTW 12 pound test low vis trilene and some Texas rigs will be good nuff for now. Most importantly, if he is having a bad day with bass, just to keep him from souring over with fishing, go after some bluegill, and teach him how to fillet them. After some fried blue's he might want not to catch bass on the next trip.
  19. Due to my ability to use common sense I quite enjoy topwater fishing, but I've always been confused as to which lures are better for what conditions. When is it better to toss out a skitterpop vs a zara spook (my favs) or a buzzbiat instead of a rebel pop r or skitterprop or other propeller bait. S.O.S. Thank in advance
  20. This is for those in the illinois, wisconsin, and iowa area, I've had terrible luck lately. Where are you guys finding them. I don't want to know your favorite fishin hole, but are you catching them in the shallows yet or are they still in the depths near you. Are the near the rocks, muck, or last years weedbeds. This is a discussion about where you're finding them, what your catchin them on, and your first good fishing stories of the year.
  21. i'm gettiing a new reel for my new graphite and fiberglass mh rods. I'm considering a braid because i'm gonna be ripping it through weeds and also in light cover. I am wodering what test i should use... 20 lb? Should a use leader, if so, mono or flouro and what test.
  22. brand isn't as important as types: colorado, indianna, andwillow leaf..have a couple of each. They've been workin great around here recently. you also want a rod with good back bone for setting that hook and rippin thru grass.
  23. Mark Zona is an alumni of my high school. I juast found out one of our security guards is an angler who has fished with him occasionally. HHHMMMM... I woder if I could get a chance to meet a celebrity. BTW I know this is not a very productive discussion, but according to my girlfriend spending hours by the water with a stick in my hand has never been productive.
