  1. i use backing on all my reels...you should be fine
  2. I think you guys are missing the point lol.. I have several setups with braid. I was merely asking if anyone in a pinch has tied a braid leader and if it worked. Im talking if I am fishing from shore and only have my rod with fluoro on it.
  3. ^^^^^^ I have a heavy veritas that is a heavier than my dx745 which is rated a mag heavy...
  4. I have several heavy rods. However, where the backbone comes in is just as important as the power. A broomstick with no tip is going to fish very differently compared a rod where there is a good bend INTO a heavy backbone. If there is enough tip, the heavy backbone is very beneficial for turning and pulling fish.
  5. I meant more as an on the fly adjustment. I know it's backwards but if you are in a tight spot does it work or should I just try and stick to straight fluoro
  6. I love Fluorocarbon and have it on most of my rods. However, sometimes I have found myself around heavy weeds and pads etcs and Fluoro doesn't work best there. Has anyone ever used braid as a leader on a mono or fluoro main line? I know it isn't the best setup as the main line has stretch but for a quick fix has anyone done it and did you have success?
  7. I entered into fishing pretty recently and in my OCD fanaticism bought alittle of every rod and reel company. Rod wise I have become totally loyal to Dobyns not only because I love their rods but because any issues I have had were promptly handled with no cost to me. I chipped some guides on some of their rods from loading them into my car. Each time I called, I got Richard and was promptly shipped guides for free, no questions asked. I have never broken their rods but if I do, $60 will cover me. That being said, I do have 2 zillion rods and 1 veritas which just work for what I want them too. Dobyns doesn't have any short rods and the 6'3 medium zillion I have is perfect for what I use it for. Loyalty to Dobyns has given them several thousand dollars but that doesn't mean I won't get something that may fit a particular need, especially if I can get a deal. I got those zillions for 50 bucks each. As for the other rods I tried, I never had a serious issue with any company and I have had a few of each. I feel there is a multitude of good, quality product out there which lends itself to every angler. Reels wise, I am much more open. Again, there are a wide variety of companies which offer good things. I have been lucky enough to delve into some of the higher cost stuff and as such Daiwa has more options. However, they don't have my "loyalty" because I am the one who has spent the money. I haven't had any issues with their products however. As for a lower cost but great value, Lew's is where its at. I have 3 of their reels and owned many more. If I were ever forced to sell my higher stuff, it would be Lew's I would go to again. I have had some shimanos and sold them. Not that they weren't good, they just weren't what I preferred. However, I have a Chronarch D which is probably my favorite reel. The main idea is to keep it open and find what works for you
  8. I haven't had any luck on trigger x baits. Maybe I just don't have enough confidence in them but I threw the flapping bug everywhere and couldn't buy a bite. It was a big/wide and heavy bait for sure
  9. Alright got dx's and some tuned Daiwas... I would have to go with some Megabass Destroyer Phase 3 Rods...Just Cause Megabass Reels or Some JD Dream Zillions....
  10. Let's hope this keeps the used zillion market fresh
  11. Had both and preferred the tourney pro though they were both excellent.
  12. The sharks I get but how does a polar bear sneak up on you lol...
  13. Just happened to see this link when checking my email...Some crazy things in here and funny things too..only like 1:30 long but seeing a guy bringing in a fish to have a polar bear attack it is pretty awesome... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/09/fishing-fails-video_n_3733084.html?ncid=webmail1
  14. You won't be dissapointed. That reel is a frog gets dream
  15. I throw it everywhere man. And type of pads though this it's lighter and so if the pads are really heavy I use something heavier. I throw it in open water if I see some submerged vegetation. Lay downs, stick ups, stumps, under overhangs and shady areas. I've had success everywhere. With pads, 90% strikes are after pulling them the over the pads and killing it on the edge. Around everything else it's about finding the cadence that they want. Some days i cast it and let it sit for 15 seconds. Other days I walk it back super fast twitch twitch twitch twitch roughly 10 times before stopping it.
  16. The d7 has a clicking star drag but does not have a clicking tension knob. The only gripe one could have with the d7 is either lower line capacity Or a larger frame. Compared to other low profile reels, it is a bit bulky. Line capacity is also lower than most. With backing I have spooled all my line on some occasions when throwing a 1/2 rattletrap so backing is now minimal and that is with 12lb. Heavier line may have you wanting to go straight line to spool.
  17. I have a Chronarch D7 and it is smooth as butter. Specifically, it has 12lb Trilene 100% fluoro on it and it's on a DX 703. I owned an MG7 in the past and sold it. They are both smooth on the retrieve but something about the Chronarch just feels better in my hands. Maybe it is the aluminum vs magnesium thing. Some prefer the larger knobs on the MG as well. Though they felt great, again, i found myself liking the Chronarch better. It is also the most phenomenal caster I have. I have one break on it and the spool tension set very low. As long as you aren't going super low weight, you will be good to go. Can't go wrong with either, but there is a reason chronarch d's are hard to find. I was lucky to score one off a forum and it was up for maybe 5 minutes.
  18. and a few more...all these on the same frog mind you.
  19. The Boo yah is by far my new favorite frog. Hooks are set alittle off the body, it soft and its smaller. All these have led to a much higher hookup ratio for me by far. I get more strikes on it too compared to other frogs
  20. I've been using 12lb suffix siege because I have an all round 705cb rod. Also, suffix has a breaking strength higher than it's rated test. It's abrasion resistant and supple...great all round mono
  21. I have a type r as my frogging reel on a 736 and had it on a 735... Though heavier, it is smooth as can be.. It has a longer handle balances better on the rod... Just my opinion though
  22. It's all about finding what works for you...the medium action for top waters is fine however abu Rods tend to be under rated in power....I would use mono to help compensate... as to reel sped, I like faster reels because when I hook a fish I wanna bring it in quick ESPECIALLY if they run at the boat...however there is nothing wrong with a 6.3:1...that used to be high speed years ago and people still caught fish
  23. I just picked up zillion 6'3 mf zillion rod and an alphas type r...oh boy
  24. I have 14 combos. That was whittled down from the 30 or so I had beforehand. Even this may be too much considering I fish from shore mostly. I take about 3 with me when I go walking. If I can fish on a boat, then I take 6 or seven. When I own a boat, it will be all of them. It's an addiction for sure
  25. Funny, because I have high end gear I go above and beyond to make sure it is never unattended. Personally, companies that have sent me stickers have already had my business and I put them on my car to help their business because they have helped me. I figure it is the least I can do for companies that have done right by me.
