  1. thanks for all the replies. Due to the inshore salt use I prefer to stay with a reel that has a carbon fiber drag and an aluminum or carbon fiber body, not graphite. Occasionally can hook into a good sized drum and they will tax your equipment, especially a 30 sized reel.
  2. My wacky senko rod is a dobyns sierra 693 sf. I actually like the 3 inch shorter rod for senkos since sometimes you are skipping around trees and docks. Rod feels like it was made for a wacky senko in my opinion. Balances better in the 3 power than the 7 footer. I had one of those as well.
  3. I have used about every brand of spinning reel over the years known to man and woman. Just wondered what brand do you feel is on top of the game right now? I am sure Daiwa will come up quite often. Reason why I ask this is because I am looking to move away from all of my lews spinning reels. I really enjoy their baitcasters, but completely unimpressed with their highest end spinning reel offerings. Each year or 2 they offer a new spinning reel in the 120 dollar range and each time I think that its gonna be the one. So far its not been even close. What are some of your guys suggestions as far as value for the money. I have an okuma rtx that I use for light inshore and bass and I have loved that reel.
  4. Thanks for replies. The new Expert Series Amistad from falcon has a much stouter tip on it than the DX745. Probably by atleast 50%. I am not sure if the older Cara Amistads were as stout as the new Experts are. Going to try the DX746 and see how I like it. Not so sure the 3/4 jigs I fish aren't closer to 7/8 and the trailer I use weighs at least a 1/4 oz so I am over an ounce easy with this setup. I have owned many different rod brands and it seems that many companies create rods with stouter tips for the power they actually are. Dobyns rods I have used seem to have lighter tips overall but more of the power lies from the middle to lower part of the blank. Part of the good balance factor I would think by keeping more weight closer to the reel seat. I am speaking specifically of fast action rods.
  5. I just bought a Dobyns 745 dx hp and I have been loving it for 3/8 and 1/2 oz jigs. I tried a 3/4 oz football jig with a large bodied creature bait trailer, which is a bait I fish a lot offshore in summer and it seems a little underpowered. Just getting an opinion on which rod you think may be best from whoever may have experience with either or both. Are both of these rods relatively the same power? Thanks.
  6. Stren Original. There was a video testing abrasion resistance I believe it was made by SaltStrong. Stren actually beat big game in that test as well as several other competitors fluorocarbon in abrasion resistance. It also casts very well. Been using it since I was a little kid and I can say it has never let me down.
  7. I bought a Dobyns Sierra 683C last year for throwing mostly vision 110's and flash pointer 100's an 115's. I also throw some LC Staysee 90's and vision 110+1 and +2 as well. At times I feel like the 683C is a little to stiff for my liking. Not necessarily for working the baits but definitely feel like you have to hit the thumb bar when fighting fish. Has anyone fished some JB's or topwaters on the 682C. One thing I discovered from holding the 684CB is that the CB line of rods is way different with the same power rating as the regular rods. My 683 sierra is definitely stiffer than my champion 4 power CB rod. Just looking to see what anyone who has some experience with this rod thinks. I am scared to move to the Champ 684CB and lose the fast action. I have tried mod-fast jerkbaits rods in the past and just not a fan. Especially in warmer water when you really have to work it hard.
  8. What about the dobyns sierra 683c? This rod is MH fast and rated 1/4 to 3/4. I heard dobyns are a little lighter than stated. I am looking at it for a jerkbait and topwater rod as well.
  9. Trying to decide between two rods for both topwater and jerkbait duties. Mojo Bass 6'8" Medium Fast or the 6'8" Medium X Fast. The first is considered to be their jerkbait rod and the second is called a topwater rod. Anybody with experience with either of these two rods that can chime in and offer some advice? I like to fish gunfish, sammy, various poppers, vision 110s, and LC staysees.
  10. I was thinking about buying this rod to throw deep crankbaits like a DT20 and 6xd for summer ledge fishing. The boat I fish on is not conducive to 8 foot rods or I would get the McAbee 8 ft cranking rod. If anyone has this rod can you please give me an idea on how it would work for deep cranking duties? I already have a dedicated squarebill to mid crank setup. Thanks.
  11. I was leaning towards the 683 just from reading the ratings on the rod. I will be using this as my primary topwater and jerkbait rod. Thanks a lot for the responses they are much appreciated.
  12. Just wondering if any of you guys have any experience with the 6'8" Dobyns sierra casting rods? I am looking to buy one for jerkbaits which I will start to fish a lot starting this february. I lost my good jerkbait rod last year overboard and have held some friends dobyns rods and they always feel pretty good. Plus it is always fun trying new stuff. I am just wondering for vision 110s and pointer 100s which would be better in this particular rod the medium or medium heavy action? Are the dobyns rods usually on the high end of the power rating or the low end. For example I know that with my other rods St Croix is relatively stiff for its given action (medium seems more like a medium heavy.) And my falcon rods are the exact opposite, they seem to be lighter than what their rating is. I have no way of feeling the rods since no one around here sells dobyns. Thanks.
  13. Just curious as to what type of set up you are fishing your rage rigs on. I think it would work real well for what the fish seem to be doing on my lake right now. Baitcast or spinning and what type of line? I will be fishing around laydowns so I dont want to go too light. Was thinking of fishing it on a spinning reel I have spooled up with 20 lb braid with a 6 foot fluoro leader 15 pound.
  14. Wonder why lowrance took the update to 6.0 software off of their website? I had just updated mine a couple of days ago and went to download the update for a friend and see that only 4.0 version is available to download. Wonder if they might have had some issues with the 6.0 software?
  15. I checked on gofree and sure enough my serial number and content ID were wrong. As soon as I changed this information, downloaded the map again and put the card in it immediately recognized it and I am up and running. Thanks again for the help eddallen.
