  1. 1. lost cove - San Jauquin delta 2. Lighting bolt - Lake oroville 3. Beaver beach - not tellin' - kinda XXX rated. It realy doesn't matter if the bass are biting, it's just worth the cruise by! :bushy-browed:
  2. X2 on the boaters Lic. I've seen to many stupid things happen on the water, not just the idiots drinking, but the "I didn't know" people! Remember boats are like trains. They both take a lot of room to stop.
  3. Use and sell the same round bend hook and never had a problem. The sickle style i wasn't a where of. I make the red Matsuo in 3/0 for your local guide and have tried them myself, don't like them. Dull way to fast, hard to re-sharpen, quality control is? I'll be looking into E.C. for a replacement. Thanks!
  4. X 2! Can't express how important this is!
  5. i use the round bend "neetle pt." 60 & 90 degree hooks and have no problems with them at all. Like the hook, price, & quality control. Plus their made in the U.S.
  6. I live in the mts. of N. cal. and have had a wood rat problem before. Tried the peanut butter trick, D-con, and others to fight off the problem. The green blocks are the best imo. Not to many stray cats around here. We have much bigger cats that eat them. And small dogs also.
  7. Out here our tournaments don't start untill Nov. and go thru May. The only ice we worry about is on the ramp early in the morn.
  8. Just turned 60 last July and made myself a promise to fish more while blowing out the candles to fish more touraments and more often. I started at the ripe old age of 10 (late bloomer), caught my frist bass at 12, own my frist boat at 12 1/2 been a junky ever since. now 13 boats and several $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ later I still get excided about not only a tournament but also a great day on the water.
  9. The old series revos are one of the best reels on the market then and now. If i was looking into buying a "new" reel, I'd look into Lews line of reels. I sold my corados and bought all new Lews TP1HL (left hand retreive) wait for sales coming up and get as much as 25% to 30% off of the $199.95 price. If you plan on getting a revo, look on E-Bay for a gen. 1 or 2 only. Quality has gone down.
  10. Dead on the money Sam. Couldn't have said it better. I have my BAIT CASTER set on as free as possible without turning the knob off the reel. A standard FLIP should only be 10' to 15', while a PITCH can be as far as you want to.
  11. Try having a senko ready when you get a miss on top water. Toss the senko where you got the missed strike.
  12. Living room - 2 deer racks (1's my late father-in-laws, the other mine) with 8 sided bamboo rods in them, 6 toruney placks - 1st. place (the others are in "their place"?) Shop - all over the place, old lures, rods, lake & Cal delta maps, display boxes from old lure companies, racks, boxes, & bens full of jigs & jig heads, some 100+ molds, a couple tons of lead (outside in the shed - big shed), 30,000+ hooks, and god only knows how much skirt material, flashabou, ect.
  13. I beleve it's outdoor life that also has a "contest" for a certified world record. Prize is $500,000 plus a new truck & boat. Tackle copanies wouldn't take the chance (I know I wouldn't) on having bogas ads. If by chance you caught it on one of my jigs or another co's. tackle and you could prove it you'd most likely get some kind of deal from them? If your marketable (had a better than avg. face, most of your teeth,& smarter than a rock), you might have a slim chance of making more $$$ than that.
  14. "I go fishing when I want to get drunk" was said to me one day. Great! 1 more idiot on the bank. I believe it's only 8% of Americans buy fishing lics. There are times I think that's 7% more than need one.
  15. Thanks for the great info. The jig part I had a good idea about (the color patterns {crawdads - crayfish}). The "training" of bass I always wondered about, not ever doing it myself. As for the transporting of bass in Calif., I had a experance with this. I caught a 8 lber. and called our local game warren and was told it was only legal if the fish was concidered a "trophy" sized bass. Trophies (in Cal.) are 10lbs. and over. Because of what I was planing to do with the bass they would look the other way. As far as the private water to private water? I'd call ahead to find out. Could result in a hefty fine. I know of a hatchery near Anderson, Ca. (N.Cal. near Redding) That raises Fla. strain & N. strain for sale to stock ponds and small lakes. "You still have to have the wardens inspect the water(s) prior to planting". This statement came the hatchery.
  16. Better? As far as fish and fishing less than yrs. pass but we stayed busy all spring & summer with only 6 or so times on the water. As far as bussiness goes, a great yr. in the tackle buss. Our tournament trails will start in another month and the pro/ams and opens soon after. I made myself a promise to fish all the pro/ams & opens on Oroville (if there's any water left in it) Clear lake & some on the delta. I've got this brat kid that's been hanging around the shop trying to learn the bussiness and seems to be getting it quite well. He's my great nephew so he's got no choice! Give an old man more time to fish!
  17. As with Rual, a 5 lber. is common place out west (clear lake, Cal. Delta, ect.) For a spot, 6 lbs. could be considered a "lunker", Smallies, 5 (to me) would also be concidered, as for large mouth, 7 to 8 is a nice fish. Thropies are 10 and over. That being said, a couple of times each yr.
  18. The biggest for me is the first Sat. of May every yr. That's when we put on our town's kid's fishing derby. To watch a child catch their first fish still give me the "that's why we do this" feeling.
  19. You might want to try a bigger profile. Try a jig for the bottom and a swim jig or swim bait for top to bottom. To get a better ans., you might want to give more info. Like water temps., types of veg. in the water, bottom (hard, soft, ect.) If you have a hard bottom or rock plies, I'd throw a jig. Grass, try a swim jig or swim or glide bait. Tulles, pitch or flip either a jig or big tube. I thought we had a thread about more info. The better the info., the better the ans. or advice can be given. Hope this helped, good luck in these methods.
  20. Your dad's right about 6 out of 10 times. A friend showed me this. Use a large snap swivel, a split ring, and a 3/4 to 1 oz. cannon ball sinker. Put all 3 together (snap swivel connected to the split ring, split ring connected to the ball sinker. Put the snap part of the swivel on your line and let it slide down your line. I tied 50' of old 80 lb. braid to the "rig" to retrieve it. Works like a charm and I'm out 50 cents for the whole thing. Works great in rip-rac (levee rocks), trees, ect. So far 100% recovery.
  21. I feel the K.I.S.S. idea is great if your having trouble with a cretain bait or two, or if you know the lake/river/pond your fishing. If it's water I know (time of yr., water temps., ect.) I'll rig up 4 rods all the same a couple others with stick baits (senkos, flukes, ect.) 2 with blade baits, another couple with tubes, and ALLWAYS at least 4 rods with jigs. I'll also keep a rod or two rigged with swim baits and the same for top water. I also carry around 20 rods in the locker. On a tournament week I'll narrow it down to what's working and only have 10 rods on the boat on tourney day.
  22. True story. I find it hard to give advice to someone who's from where? I pass on those.
  23. Great find. I've fished some lakes that it was hard to keep your train of thought on just fishing. Lake Shasta, Trinty, & Whiskeytown are just three that come to mind in N. Cal. Shasta I have to go for a week prior to a tourney just to get the rubber necking out of my system and get get down to fishing. If you haven't been their it's worth the trip. Just for the sites alone. Fishing = lots of spots, not much on size.
  24. This all started when I was taught (was being taught) how to flip. I had to stand on a 5 gal. bucket and flip into 9" pie plates. Once I got to where I was hitting the plates on a reg. basis they were fulled with water. I got a lot of strange looks back then. I'm glad I kept it up.
  25. My best friend out here is a guide and his is the same. To my knowledge he's never had to give a free trip, but this is Oroville. If you can't catch bass on Oroville you shouldn't be wasting your $$$ on bass fishing. Maybe quilting would be your best bet.
