  1. Rip it right out of the grass or count it down so your just barely ticking the top of the grass. You can also just cast it out and real it in like a lipless crankbait.
  2. I do not fish them vertically very much. I take a long cast and let them flutter to bottom. Then I hop it slowly back to the boat. A lot of the strikes I get is when it is fluttering back to bottom after I left it a couple feet off bottom. I have a lot of confidence in this bait in the late fall. Of course I love to fish jigs to but there are many days when you simply catch more fish on a silver buddy. I have my most luck fishing it around very steep drop offs where there are schools of baitfish. It is an excellent late season bait. I rarely vertically jig it.
  3. How were you retrieving them ?
  4. They are a very effective bait in the fall especially when bass are relating to baitfish in deeper water.
  5. Nice little article. The silver buddy is one of my go to baits in the fall. I am sure there must be other guys that do the same. I fish 10-45 feet with them.
  6. Does anyone else use silver buddies ? When and where do you prefer to use them ?
  7. It has been a pretty warm September. This past Monday though it was a balmy 26 degrees in the morning. I will be on vacation from Oct 17th-27th. I will for sure be fishing almost every day and will know exactly what the water temperature is. I DO NOT hope for any early ice. I would much rather be in my boat as long as i can. Last year I was ice fishing on thanksgiving just a couple days after being in my boat bass fishing. I really hope it stays warm in the 60s. If it is in the 50s the last two week of Oct I will be happy. Overcast, light winds and light rain will make me very happy.
  8. In 2 weeks the water temperature will be pretty close to 50 degrees. Winter fishing to me means ice fishing. I usually break the ice a few times with my boat before I put it away around thanksgiving. Right now for most places the water temperature is in the low 60's to high 50's around Maine and Vermont. Right now my three best baits are a jig, a square bill and texas rigged worm. Once the water cools to 50 degrees I stick with the jig and blade baits like the silver buddy.
  9. Once the water temperature drops under 50 degrees I fish very slow and deep
  10. Bob, I haven't stopped shaking. lol. One heck of a fish. Did he get it weighed on a certified scale ? Congrats to him. I don't recall seeing him during the Maine Bass Trail tourneys.
  11. The girth on that thing looks bigger then 18 inches
  12. That bass is a fish of many life times. One heck of catch. How deep did he catch it ? He must be getting a mount ? Did he take it to the taxidermist ?
  13. WOWSERS That thing is huge. There must be an article to go with it ?
  14. I love fishing in the late fall here in New England. There aren't many people on the water. Summer tourists are gone, kids are in school, and a lot of fisherman switch to hunting. The bite definitely slows down numbers wise but the average size increases a lot. Late fall is a great time to catch a truly monster bass. they become somewhat predictable. There are times when you have to fish 40 feet and others when 10 feet is fine. They key is isolated offshore structure. I fish right up until the ice is too thick for my boat to break through. I usually fish until about thanksgiving.
  15. The fish in that pond are very stressed, the water there is extremely low. It is the lowest it has been in 50 years. The odd color patterns, the pinkish areas, are open sores. The fish in that pond have been extremely skinny and sickly. We need rain there in the worst of way. This year I have caught a lot of fish with open sores like that in that particular pond. Once the water level comes up and the water cools most of the sick fish will heal and put on some weight. Even though they are stressed and sick they can still be caught. They have to eat.
  16. A good bass is between 20-22 inches. A big bass anything over 22 inches.
  17. I didn't have much time to fish today. My friend Aaron and I fished a small pond by his camp in Buckfield, ME. We fished for 3 hours and caught 13 bass between the two of us. Off shore weeds in 6-8 feet was where we caught most of our fish. We didn't get any big fish. We did get 2 fish that weighed in at exactly 3 lbs. I wish we had more time to fish this pond but maybe next time. We had three hours on a pond that neither of us had every fished to figure things out. If we had 8 hours on that pond I am sure we would have caught more fish. I think that I will be going back there in the spring.
  18. Got a couple fish today fishing in the wonderful state of Maine 5-2 5-2 6-8
  19. The bite was a bit slow today 12 bass but half were over 3 lbs. 5-2 5-2 6-8
  20. Got on the water a bit earlier today. I was on the lake at 730 am. It was windy and overcast. Water temperature was 62 degrees. My first bite of the day was a 3 lb 12 oz largemouth. Caught another small fish after that then it was pretty slow for awhile. The wind picked up 10-20 out of the east as the front was passing through. With the strong cold wind from the east the water temperature cooled down to 61 degrees. After the front had passed the sun came out and felt very nice. The wind stopped for awhile around noon and the water temperature jumped up to 64 degrees. During this time I had the best bite of the day. The fish were very scattered. I caught them on off shore weed beds and other isolated off shore structure. I fished until dark landing 12 largemouth. At the end of the day the wind picked up again out of the east 10-15 mph. Biggest 5 fish for the day were 6-8, 5-2, 5-2, 3-12 and 3-10 for a total of 24 -2. Pretty good day considering the conditions with the east wind. Here is the first 5-2 I caught for the day. This fish has special significance to me. It is the 50th bass over 5 lbs I have caught for the year. When I caught this fish it was still pretty cold out. I was wearing my winter jacket. Caught this 6 lb 8 oz bass around noon. Landed this 5 lb 2 oz bass later in the afternoon. Not the healthiest fish in the world.
  21. Let me know how you do. Water temperature today was 64 degrees when I got on the lake at 1230. It was overcast and the wind was blowing out of the east. I had to wait for my buddy. I hadn't fished with him in years. The bite wasn't very good. It was kind of slow. Couldn't get any kind of pattern going. We saw some big 3-5 lb fish cruising but couldn't get any to bite. I landed 9 largemouth and 3 smallmouth. Nothing to speak of. Got most of my fish on a weightless worm.
  22. I got most of my hits on a crawfish colored rage craw. I would recommend any color that looks like a shiner, a crawfish or a leech.
  23. After I caught my personal best.... It made me hungry for more !!
