I don't believe that the lake is off limits, but you'd have to be a real a$$**** to try fishing next to the Classic anglers. Watch and learn, but don't steal their thunder. Just my opinion.
I guess it's the BPS version of an Ugly Stik. But for $20, what have you got to lose? Try it out and let us know what you think. That is, after we thaw out!
The bad thing is that Iaconelli really has a lot of very useful fishing insight and advice to offer. But sometimes I think being a "celebrity" gets in the way. When he tones it down and talks fishing, you can learn a lot.
Take your time, look through each aisle, and find what YOU think will work for the areas and types of fishing that you prefer. Asking thousands of people will only confuse things.
I think it's a confidence thing. If you go out and slay 'em with red hooks, you'll have more confidence in using them and will be inclined to do so more regularly. Personally, I don't think there is a huge factor, as I have used both and gotten similar results. But I do not think red hooks lessen the chance of catching a bass at all.
Check out G&G Bait Company out of Indiana. All hand made, hundreds of skirts to pick from, along with blades, sizes, shapes, you name it. Customize them to your waters and G&G will make them for you and ship quickly. Quality lures at a decent price.
BPS Brawler is $20 and looks like their version of an Ugly Stik. Not that I've tried it. But it's cheap. Go with the Lightning Rod though. You won't be disappointed. I have 3 and love them.
Berkley soft plastics have always worked well for me, and they won't break the bank. The Havoc Pit Boss has caught me many bass!
By the way, BPS has some of their cranks as their Catch of the Week right now online. You may want to jump on it if you decide to go that route!
Many, many bass lures are designed to catch the fisherman, not the fish. Keep buying expensive lures, and I guarantee they will keep making them. Which is why I won't. And I still catch plenty. The bass have no idea what I spent.
