  1. I have Curados back to the first of the B series and frankly all the reels perform fine so long as they are serviced properly. Fit is very important so it's a matter of reel, rod and hand combined to the best grip for the particular angler. When the grip is one that is locked down and comfortable the fisherman can work a bait all day in comfort. I've heard angler's refer to reels as "disposable" but the funny thing is even the less expensive ones perform fine if kept up and cared for. Shimanos low profile midrange reels the Citica and Curado are wonderful long term tools. Keep them up and they will be reels you can pass on to the grandkids.
  2. I wanted to post this because this style of lure has loaded the boat for us time and again fishing in Canada for smallmouth bass. I suspect in any nothern waters it will work just as well. I refer to them a Red Fish Magic style baits since we use not only the branded version from Strke King but construct our own versions from Slayer components and Mission Fishin jigs to name a few. We discovered the effectivenss by accident back in 2005. I left in a hurry for the Canada trip and had maybe 20 of the Red Fish Magic baits in my duffel from a saltwater trip a few weeks before. Tying one on just to see if it would get hit resulted in fish right way. Loads of them! in fact since we started using the bait we have landed walleye, smallmouth, largemouth, pike and musky. Some of the last two have exceeded 40lbs. Quite a lure and a real sleeper in northern freshwater.
  3. Frankly the weather is decent right now. Just wish I had more time for fishing but it's meeting and conference season for my other line of work. Emmrods are an aquired taste. The custom rod folks look at me with distain as the time. After all it's sort of hard to customise a blank thats solid steel with one guide. I understand the lack of love, on the Jax kayak site it took me years to get accepted. Now there are even folks who will admit using the Emmrod in public. I fish with other anglers all the time and once they see what can be done with the little rods things change.
  4. Saw this stream on the Emmrods and wanted to comment. I'm failry well known in the Emmrod world, yes there really is such a thing. The gear works or I would not use it. Basically all of my sport fishing is Emmrod and we have the pictures and video to prove it. But the reason I got into Emmrod was the fact that they are fun. Fishing is my recreation and I want to enjoy it to the fullest. I'm an active kayak angler from my Wavewalk 500, plus fish from shore and boats too. Simply put give the Emmrods a chance. If you are baitcast angler the casting distance we get normally brings the comment "do that again" it's pretty cool. Fish fighting power is outstanding. Besides you rarely have to worry about those rod eating screen doors, tail gates or truck lids.
