I always keep an ultra lite setup with me. I grew up in Southern California, and it is my rainbow trout set up. It's a 5' rod with a small reel, I have 6 lbs test on it, and use it to fish with 4" flukes. It makes it fun on a slow day. I've caught a couple 5-6lbs bass on it, and also some big peacocks. It's great for fishing ponds that don't have a lot of vegetation, but have the steep drop off. Give it a try.
Also, I just fished with a buddy and he had one of those counter top rod and reel combos that are about 2 feet long they sell at bass pro for $10. We were live shiner fishing for peacock bass with it. Maybe the most fun I've ever had fishing.
