Tom,
Welcome to the site. This is a great place to learn. You can try what you learn at Collins Lake in Scotia if you haven't done so already.
I'm local to the area as well. Live in Albany, NY
Welcome!
I intend to trade in a bunch of stuff this year just because it's for charity. Anything I get will be better than the rods and reels sitting in my closet doing nothing.
I can't afford to have several rods rigged up with the same lure and various lines (lb test) to vary the depth the lure runs. When it comes to crankbaits I buy the same brand and make sure I have the various lures to cover the depth I intend to fish. Simply by switching to a deeper diving one I generally can get the bait where I want it.
My setup includes a 7' biatcaster with 10lb FC. I carry Strike King KVD 1.0's all the way down to the 6xds on this setup.
Why the various lines vs switching to lures which fish a little deeper?
Post *** yet again ... There is 2 feet of snow piled up alongside my driveway and no relief in sight!
Congrats ... can't wait to post my 1st of the season ... even if it's a dink!
I cooked for my 5 Valentines. The wife and 4 daughters enjoyed the meal. The wife and I extended it to Saturday at the Food and Wine Festival.
Fun times.
I just picked up the Jackall nose jig heads for this technique. Looking forward to trying this with some of the new drop shot lures. Things like the dreamshot, z-drop etc.
Any others try this yet?
I use a leader on my spinning rigs in clear water. In those cases I use 10lb with a 6 or 8lb leader. So with that being said I think you will be ok with 6 or even 8lb.
As a friend I would try and get him out to talk and discuss it. See if there is something more to the story than what you observed. The big red flag to me is this vacation with the neighbor. Something just doesn't seem right there.
Based on what you described I would have been long gone, kids and all if possible!
