  1. Not sure where to post this, but long story short: my mother is coming to visit us in S.FL. in 2 weeks, she lives in Poland (where I was born) and she visits me, my wife, and our 2 kids, on fairly regular basis. Now, I always wanted to take her shooting guns, but she wasn't thrilled with the idea, so I didn't push it. Recently she confessed that she feels bad about not going shooting with me because it is something I love and she should participate in it. I said no worries mom, and then she said she will certainly go fishing with me!!! I'm like great! So I have this idea: I want to catch a bass or two, as well as a snakehead or two, and cook them for her/us! I'm thinking deep friend fillets breaded with seasoning, but wanted to ask you guys for any other recipes. Both bass and snakeheads are boneless, so that's good, and the only way I ever cooked them was by deep frying. now I'm thinking about maybe broiling or grilling with some mustard/oil spicing on one side, or... Give me your favorite recipe for fresh water fish!!!
  2. OK, I know I've posted about the canal behind my house a lot, but I need to post something else :-) Two major developments were observed in the last few days: 1) For the first time in 6 or 8 months I've caught a bass in it!!! And my brother caught one too, on a fly rod with a popping top-water fly or something. On the same day! In a matter of few hours! We both caught a bass each! They were nothing to write home about, but still! I think it's due to all the recent heavy rain in S.FL., the water levels went way up, and they must have swam in from larger connecting canals. 2) On the same day I saw 2 separate schools of baby snakeheads being guarded by parents. One was 100 yards down from the other one. So looks like the snakehead population in that dinky little canal is about to go through the roof, I've also been catching smaller ones lately, baby snakeheads that are 12-14 inches, along with larger adults. Awesome!!! 3. LOL, you're right! it catches whatever i want it to catch, it's just a matter of how far from shore i cast it :-) 0-2ft i catch snakeheads 3-7ft i catch bass :-D
  4. For the last two months Booyah Pod Crasher Jr. is all I've been using. Every fish in the "FL Bragging Rights" has been caught on a top water frog :-) I like to learn a new lure every few months, and I've been stuck on a frog for a bit too long, but I'm loving it :-)
  5. I want to update my stats with an 18" from May 26th, and 20" from May 31st. So my top 5 lengths right now are 20"+20"+20"+18"+18" == 96" TOTAL. I'm not sure if I'll have any time to fish before the 6th of May (that's the end date right?) so I think I'm going to exit this tournament today with 96" total length. Then again, there's a possibility I'll go fishing today afternoon and next week, so who knows :-) Here's the 20": And here's the 18":
  6. no, unfortunately not. they work great in FL sun, but are too dark to be used effectively as it starts to get darker i'm looking for glasses that are polarized and barely dimmed...
  7. I picked up a pair or SpiderWire 1mm polarized shades at Walmart the other day for $16, and they work great!
  8. TOP!!! WATER!!! Throw a hollow body frog around and under trees and/or close to shore. Or walk a spook like a dog :-)
  9. Me no, nothing stupid, yet (well maybe except how sometimes I suck at casting and I will hit the same tree five times in a row because i'm too dense to move over a bit). But I hear LgMouthGambler once left his rod lying on a boat with the tip over the boat's edge, and a hollow body frog with enough line to touch the water... you guess what happened :-)
  10. 5lbs bass on a $16.99 walmart special rig with my 4-yo son when his hand was broken and in a cast. wanted to make him feel better and took him fishing. you can see this memory in my profile pic. we both had huge smiles on our faces, and seeing him jump up and scream "big bass fish! big bass fish!" just made my day, and that's how i sort of got back into bass fishing too :-)
  11. yea, since like 3 days ago LOL :-P i'm on MH/F 6'8" Compre right now with 6.x:1 Curado, but looking to up the reel speed and maybe get a heavy rod that's a bit longer. 50# braid is a must.
  12. i'll use whatever will catch fish and couldn't care less about brands of my lures. i like zoom flukes, swim flukes, and lizards. i have some gambler and gary yamamoto lures too, as well as KVD and Booyah frogs. now, i'm all about shimano when it comes to rods and reels. shimano always treated me good when i was doing bicycle racing (sports bikes, long road trips and racing) and so it was natural to go with it, plus LgMouthGambler insisted REALLY hard that I do :-P
  13. as do I. i never keep a fish out of the water for longer than a minute, maybe minute and a half. i was just making a point about what it COULD survive. anyways, guys, don't think that i don't care about fish's well being and all. i really do. i treat them gently, remove the hook as cleanly as i can, and I never THROW them back, I release them gently. but in the end, it is just a fish, and the whole sport is inhumane to begin with :-)
  14. with all due respect, i think the hold your breath tip is silly. most people can't hold their breath for a minute. but more importantly, fish are cold blooded animals with much slower metabolism than worm blooded mammals (humans in this case). slower metabolism = slower oxygen burn rate = more time out of the water before brain damage occurs (and I mention brain/central nervous system because other organs recover better from oxygen deprivation). Now, I know that I could hold my breath up to 3 minutes (yes I've done it before with a stop watch), and am sure a 2+lbs fish can handle it as well. another example i can quote, though not directly related to fish, but still illustrates how long a simple organism can survive without oxygen: often times at night I see night crawlers fall into the bottom of my pool, i will be outside smoking etc and I see them moving around for 10-15 minutes before they go dead... anyways, i'm not saying keep every fish for 3-5 minutes out of the water, but i think it's not going to kill it if you do.
  15. wait, you're saying they can live in salt water? or be used as good bait, all chopped up and stuff?
  16. LOL! No I don't mind them here! They're are probably my favorite fish to catch, with bass being a very close second. I'm just wondering where the big ones are. The fact that I'm catching younglings is a good sign to me: they're reproducing, so there'll be more to catch! I guess there's so many babies they're overwhelming the parents :-) It's a small canal after all and they have to hide somewhere... it looks like there's a snakehead by the bank every 10 yards now :-)
  17. So I left work early today (4pm :-) ) and took my son fishing behind my house. I landed 2 snakeheads in 15 minutes... baby snakeheads! Before I would catch nice side adults, but now all there is are juveniles! LMG even caught a tiny one last time we fished here. So, good news is, they're reproducing in my canal :-D Bad news is... where are all the big ones?!? M.
  18. No music for me. The quieter the better. Fishing, besides giving the the thrill of catching my next largest bass or snakehead, also is my zen time :-) i like it nice and quiet...
  19. Just ordered from BassPro 4 Booyah Popping Pod Crashers, and 4 Booyah Pod Crashers Jr, one in every color thay make :-)
  20. yep, 50# power pro all the way to frog. curado G on a compre MH/F is my frogging / topwater rig... mostly frogging though
  21. Hi gang! So I started to fish hollow body frogs lately, I was getting a ton of strikes but no hookups! I used Booyah and KVD frogs, and was getting super frustrated when every fish I would catch got away (well I did land a few, but my strike to land ration was like 10:1). Well I figured it out!!! What made all the difference was setting my drag as tight as it would go! Been fishing with drag set super tight last week or so and have not lost a single fish!!! Try it! M.
  22. Curado G :-) just flush and lube the bearing first
  23. i did this the other day and all i had was rubbing alcohol and thin gun oil. i flushed in alcohol, dried, and lubed the bearings and the spool rod thingie, as well as cleaned and oiled the break drum. my casting distance on my Curado G6 nearly doubled :-) good luck!
  24. i had the same problem, then learned that if you keep it loose and pull on the main line it will tighten and you'll not waste 3 feet of line :-)
