If guy in front of you is flipping and trolling motor is on 80 then try to either keep up with him flipping or cover water across tops of weeds. Squarebill, fluke, spinnerbait, chatterbait, buzz bait.
If trolling motor is slow use stuff like t rigs, senko, shakey head, jigs. Stuff that you need to wait for the fall.
8/10 times if he's good, he'll be on fish. Then it's a 50/50 shot if he's gonna position the boat for you too.
If your paying gas money under tournament rules IMO cast wherever the hell you want. If your not then imagine there's a line going across the center of the boat and don't cast over that line. If it's team tourney you'll prob both Be on the front deck together half the time.
Which brings me to next point if he's back boating you after you just gave him $40 for gas and he's fishing a specific tree, dock or structure, ALL DAY. Communicate with him. A closed mouth doesn't get fed and in most scenarios you can go to the tournament director and get him DQ'd for back boating you.
^ all other scenarios Frogflogger above nailed it. If he's cranking a point try a C Rig. If he's skipping docks try senko. But If he's fishing a rock bluff and covering water with motor on 40-50 and getting them, you can copy what he's doing. Chances are you will have great success.
Remember it's a pro am format, you are the amateur. The pro is worried about him and only him. BUT then again out of the hundreds of tourneys I've fished as a co-angler, I can count on 1 hand how many boaters were complete jerks at first and after communicating with the person they ended up being great and helpful. Sometimes also in trails guys that are way far behind in points may only be fishing for lunker so a limit means nothing to them. So he may bust his arse trying to help you in his search for a hog.
