  1. Welcome to BR!
  2. Hello and welcome!
  3. The lake that I usually fish is pretty shallow. Average depth is about 5 feet or so. There is a deep rocky resovoir that I fish sometimes though when I visit my parents or brother. Maybe Ill pick up a football jig or 2 and give them a try there.
  4. Well, I guess the swim jig is what Im most interested in since thats really the only jig I currently own. It seems to be more of a moving bait so now Im thinking that its probably not going to be the best winter time lure but Id still like to learn the proper technique for fishing it. What kind of retrieve, trailer (I have some Berkley craws in the same color as the jig), and what power rod/reel gear ratio.
  5. Happy New Year everyone! Now lets get drunk!!
  6. Wow. I don't know how I missed that. I swear I looked through the videos like 3 times and didn't see that. Thank you sir.

  8. Thats awesome. I found a couple of Rapalas and a Rat-L-Trap after Sandy flooded the creek below my lake. Theres also a tree there hanging out over the water that has all kinds of lures hanging from it. Im tempted to try and climp up and get them but the tree looks pretty rickety. With my luck I'd end up in the water.
  9. Went out for a couple hours this morning for one last trip before my liscence expires. Managed a nice brown trout right around sunrise on a Strike King Bitsy Minnow but nothing else. Kinda neat cuz it was my first trout on a crankbait. Anyway, Happy New Year and I'd just like to say thanks to everyone for being so helpful and willing to share thier fishing knowledge and wisdom with us new guys. And thanks to Glenn and the mods for giving us all a place to congregate.
  10. Thanks Bluebasser. That cleared a lot up. And thanks for the link Tbone. Thats like a jig fishing text book. Very informative. I skimmed over most of it and book marked it for future reference.
  11. Let me start by saying that I haven't really done much jig fishing. The other day I was in a tackle shop and I ended up buying a black/blue swim jig thinking that maybe it could produce some winter bass for me. But it got me thinking, I hear you guys talk about so many different types of jigs. What makes a swim jig a swim jig? If I had to guess, I'd say that the name implys that you would use more of a swimming retrieve rather than the hopping/dragging bottom types or retrieves but I could be way off base. Also what are some of the different kinds of jigs and what are the differences between them? I want to start using jigs more but to be honest, Im a bit overwhelmed. Perhaps Im making it harder than it needs to be.

  13. Hello and welcome to Bass Resource!
  14. I got 75 bucks in Bps giftcards for Xmas. Just got done checking the shipping cost. For a $75 order its $13 for standard shipping. Thats nuts! Plus it says they add $6 on all rods 6ft and over. I was planning on going to the store anyway but still, nuts! After I use these cards, its gonna be TW for me from now on.
  15. I never really got into Halo. No reason in particular. Getting tired of the Call of Duty franchise but for some reason I keep buying them. I guess just cuz Ive beaten them all to death and I wanna keep my streak alive. I'd reccomend the Assassins Creed, Elder Scrolls, or Fallout games if your looking for something a little different.
  16. Sucks you didn't get out as much as you wanted to but still sounds like a good year to me. Congrats!

  18. Good jig trailers: Craws, flukes, single or double tail grubs, maybe even half a senko. Worms/jig skirts melting: Never had that problem but heard something about some chemical in the plastic reacting to a differnt kind of plastic. Im sure others can elaborate. Worms losing scent in plano boxes: Its possible. They'll most likely hold they're scent better if kept in the original bags.
  19. Topwater lures, spinnerbaits, anything really. You can diversify and try and have a little of everything or you could just save the space for now. Maybe down the road a ways, you'll decide you like a certain technique more than another. Then you have extra boxes for more cranks, jigs or whatever.
  20. Probably won't be the end of the world. My rods rated for 1/4 to 1/2 oz but I still throw 1/8 oz inline spinners from time to time. You won't be able to cast it as far though.
  21. Nice fish!
  22. Hello and welcome!
  23. Hey guys. I need some tips on cleaning/maintaining my spinning reel. This is my first time doing this and I don't want to mess it up. Its only a cheapo Shakespeare reel but its been sounding a bit rough and its all I got so I want to keep it in good working order. Plus I figure its best if I learn on a cheap reel rather than an expensive one. I found a youtube video showing how to take it apart and he showed how to oil/grease it but he didn't mention anything about cleaning it out. I had an old reel that didn't work anymore (the gears would grind and when I opened it there were lots of metal shavings) so I took that apart just to see how it was done. There was a lot of gunk and buildup. Im assuming this is just old oil and grease but it looked kind of gritty too. Should I just apply the new oil and grease over the old or should I clean this out and if so whats the best way to do it? Also any ideas on what would cause the gears to grind like that so I can avoid this in the future? Any help is greatly appreciated.
  24. Agreed. And it works too. Seems like everytime I order something online whether its BPS or any other site I end up getting a couple of things that I didn't orignally intend to buy.
