  1. Looks like a Fowlers Toad to me. http://www.dnr.state.md.us/wildlife/Plants_Wildlife/herps/Anura/FowlersToad.asp
  2. Good job man...nice fish!
  3. Awesome fish...congrats on the PB!
  4. Welcome to Bass Resource!
  5. This...almost all of the fish I caught last fall were on a squarebill crankbait.
  6. Well I've only been at this a little over a year. Last season I got skunked a lot on everything and had trouble developing any kind of pattern at all. Then I found Bass Resource and this season has been much better. These are obviously all generalities but this is what's been working for me so far... -Spinnerbaits in the springtime, all day everyday. -In the summer jitterbugs, poppers, and spooks early in the morning and flipin'/pitchin' jigs and T-rigged soft plastics with a pegged weight to cover midday-afternoon -Squarebills along shoreline cover in the fall -In the winter fish for the trout that DNR stocks (small inline spinners and cranks). You'll get skunked less.
  7. C'mon man...to bond and get to know him better...? You wanted to fish his grandfathers beasty massive lake. You can admit it...there's no shame in that. Anyway, sucks about the fish. Losing an average fish is bad enough but losing one that would have been a PB really hurts.
  8. Good looking fish...things a beast!
  9. Nice fish! Dude, Yum Dingers and private ponds are where it's at! I have permission to fish a private pond as well and Yum Dingers are my go to bait there. Any stick bait really and since Yum Dingers are about 3 or 4 dollars cheaper than senkos and the bass at this pond crush them all day long, I go with the Dingers and save a couple bucks. Funny thing is, I can't buy a bite with them anywhere else; just this one private pond.
  10. Welcome to BR! As for losing your frogs, make sure you check your line every so often for nicks/fraying. If it's nicked or frayed re-tie. Are you sure they're being lost to bass? Could be pike or pickerel hitting them and cutting the line with their teeth. Also make sure you always wet a knot before you cinch it tight. This reduces friction which can cause a weak spot. Always make sure you give your knots a good pull for good measure just to make sure they're good and tight. If you lose a lure and the line is all curly at the end, it was your knot that failed. If its strait, then your line broke or was cut by some toothy critter.
  11. Welcome to Bass Resource! That's a nice smallie in your picture. Largemouth are green with a black stripe down the side. Like this... Smallies are a brownish/goldish color and largemouths are green.
  12. Awesome fish...congrats to your wife!
  13. Nothing wrong with a $1 Wal Mart spinnerbait. I caught my first 3 fish this season on one. Are there better spinnerbaits out there? Sure. Will the $1 ones catch fish? Sure. And for $1 a piece, it's gonna hurt a lot less when you lose one. I'd say stock up on a few different colors that are productive on your lakes.
  14. Awesome fish...congrats!

  16. Welcome to BR...nice fish!
  17. Now this I have noticed to be true. I drive on a lot of country back roads for my job and if I see a lot of deer or really a lot of animals in general, the fishing usually tends to be good that day or the next morning.
  18. I didn't feel like reading all the other responses so sorry if this has already been said. Sometimes I'll check the lunar forecast before I go out (mainly using weather.com as well) but I've never really noticed any accuracy to it. I've had it say the fishing is going to be slow and caught plenty of fish and I've had it say the fishing is going to be excellent and come up empty. I don't use it to dictate whether I fish or not. If I have the time and I wanna fish, I fish. Sometimes when I get back, I'll look at the lunar chart and compare it to how I did just for fun but it's rare that it actually syncs up. If I see its a new moon or a full moon or something like that, I may tell myself, 'the fishing is gonna be good tomorrow' but I really won't know for sure til I get to the lake and actually get my line wet. Basically what I'm saying is, if you wanna fish, then go fish and don't worry so much about the lunar charts.
  19. And they were all small. But whatever. I haven't posted any pics recently and I like to get a little pat on the back from you guys from time to time. Went out yesterday evening from about 5-8 PM and caught 3 fish. The first one, though small, was significant for me cuz it was my first flippin'/pitchin' fish. Saw a disturbance at the edge of the weed line, pitched my baby brushhog with the 1/2 oz. pegged weight into the middle of the ripples and he hit it on the fall. Shortly after it started to drizzle and I caught my first fish on my Scatter Rap Crank. He hit it off of a point in the weeds. This one was a little better but still small. After fishing for another 30 minutes or so with no luck, I drove around to the other side of the lake and started fishing off a small floating platform that the park rangers launch kayaks from. Pitched to some weeds, hopped my brushhog all the way back to me and the fish actually came out of the water about 3 inches to grab my bait as I was lifting it out. Just as I was about to leave I saw a dad and his 2 kids coming back towards the platform in a little inflatable raft. I saw the one kid catch one about 14 inches and much to my chagrin, the dad netted it, unhooked it, and put it on a stringer with another largemouth that looked to be just barely legal. I mean, he's well within his rights. The fish were legal and all but I started doing catch and release this season and it just kind of gets to me now for some reason. Oh well...to each his own. I guess it gets to me a little more because they were tourists camping at the lake and because the fish at this lake aren't exactly huge and a 14 inch fish isn't anything to turn your nose up at. But whatever, ya know. I struck up a conversation with the guy and he seemed nice enough. Judging from his heavy accent, probably not an American citizen, but he was taking his kids out fishing so I guess you have to respect that. All in all it was a fun evening. If I hadn't gone fishing, I would have just watched TV and screwed around on my laptop and 3 fish, small though the were, made the trip well worth it.
  20. I mean, I guess laws are laws and whatever but if your fishing right there by your truck and your license is right there, that's pretty beat. I wouldn't be happy about this at all and I'd probably go to court and fight it too.
  21. Both of these responses are spot on. I'll just add that while you can fish them at any depth, try to keep them from dragging the bottom as they can be easily snagged. I think I've lost more lipless cranks than any other bait. Don't let that deter you from fishing them though. They're an awesome bait!
  22. Awesome fish!
