  1. River for me is the upper Niagara. Has a bit of current. Go to is a white spinner, then a hot pink x-rap xr08. If that fails then I'll head out off of the 3-12ft. Water to about 15-20ft and try a silver or watermelon tubejig.
  2. Thanks for the tip. I may hold off on silver lake until the fishing picks up again, maybe towards the beginning of fall? I haven't really fished silver lake, was going to head out there with my dad for the first time. We have been pulling in smallies in the river and here and there in Lake Erie. I think it's just a tough year all around with the cold winter and not so warm start to the summer.
  3. Also having trouble locating smallies this year. Consistency has been mediocre. Agreed, water clarity is an issue I believe with the lake turning over and the runoff
  4. How is the bite up on silver lake right now? Thinking about heading there this weekend..
  5. Caught my biggest on a gulp alive 3 in. Leech drop shotting. But have caught some nice ones on wacky style and jigs
  6. spinnerbait (war eagle) : 11 fish, biggest - 3lb 8oz, 18.5 inches jerkbait (x-rap) : 2 fish, biggest - 2lb 12oz, 17 inches
  7. Smallmouth just over 7lbs. drop shot with no. 1 hook and Berkley gulp alive 3 in. black leech in lake erie
  8. I started using x-raps a few years back and they produce. Being on the upper niagara river and in Lake Erie, the smallies go nuts for these. Try the XR06 or XR-08 sizes, I fish in about 3-12 ft. of water with these and run them just over the weeds. Reeling and stopping for a few seconds as it is suspending, then jerking, or start reeling again and wam. I hit them almost every time I use them. My top colors are hot pink, a purple/silver, and green muddler. The newest color that I have been using is hot mustard muddler. I usually use spinnerbaits up here but if it's slow I throw that hot mustard x-rap on and they can't seem to resist. Edit: they are a bit overpriced, I was hesitant to buy them at first but I have been lucky to have only lost 1-2 in the past years.
  9. I definitely love the feel of a 6'6 medium fast action rod for spinnerbaits, it is a very strong backbone rod being st. croix, but also has a ton of flexibility at the tip. I will also probably look at another 6'6 medium heavy for jigs, and the 7' medium for trebles. The one thing Im not really sure on is what baitcasters to get next. If I use my revo sx and st. croix 6'6 medium fast for spinnerbaits, I would like to get maybe a shimano curado or a 7-1-1 ratio for jigging. if that sounds correct. Also possibly another revo sx (because i love it) or a shimano citica. Another question is, I seen pinacle baitcasters, what are your guys opinions?.. I also have a spinning reel and rod for dropshot use only too
  10. I have been bass fishing for quite a while and I was using a cheap spinning reel and rod for some time. This past spring I managed to pick up my first baitcaster and decided to go with the Abu Garcia Revo SX, with a 6'6 medium, fast action st. croix mojo bass rod. I am really getting more involved in bass fishing and want to get a few combos before spring for different techniques. I find my current setup is great for both spinnerbait and jigging. I would like to get some ideas on what technique my current setup is designed for, so I could add a few more combos for topwater/crankbaits, spinnerbait, and jigging/soft plastics. I heard a good rod for spinnerbaits would be a 6', what kind of action do I want, what gear ratio baitcaster do I need, and line type and #. and Ive also seen that jigging/pitching/flipping I should use a 7'6 rod? is this correct? I would appreciate if someone would get me in the right direction for 3 or 4 different combos that I can work on, and what type of line and #test to use.

Hey! My name is Ryan, I came across this site just browsing around for different fishing tips. I also know a few people that come to this site to look for tips. I am 19 and I have been fishing since I was 4 years old. The fish I remember most when I was young is catching a northern pike in Canada. I have been into bass fishing for quite a while, and head out on the boat with my Dad every weekend to Upper Niagara River and Lake Erie. The largies and smallmouth fishing is amazing, when I get on them. I am still looking for new techniques to fishing. Last year I decided to start using baitcasters. My first one being a Abu Garcia Revo SX with a st. croiux mojo bass rod and I LOVE it. It is great with soft plastics and spinners. I am looking to add on and start getting combos for each technique of fishing and really get into the tournament bass fishing in my area in a few years.
