Tried helping a friend use his last night. He said he bought it because it was cheap and the guy at the local shop recommended it. He now wants something better. The reel works and feels like $50 reel. Nothing more and nothing less.
Saros or Stradic 2500 series depending upon what price you can find them for. Also consider what size line you will use. I mainly fish 8# so the 2500 series is ideal. If I fished a heavier line or needed more line capacity the 3000 would get the nod. The 1000 is more relevant if you fish 4 or 6# line.
Outside of the palming and the slightly heavier feel the reel is incredible. Pretty much worry free casting. Very impressed with the retrieve and casting distance. Paid $75 for it couldn't be happier.
I would look for a used 200 D series Shimano reel. The Citica would be pretty affordable. Guys use them for big cranks and spinnerbaits as well as the A-Rig. The Curado 300E is more costly but it would be slightly more beefed up.
Matt you can't put purple and blue together! Just kidding I know you are probably playing around with spool options. Killer setups! It's unfortunate a few good oldies had to be sacrificed but its the way it goes sometimes.
Would love to see video footage on a football field showing distances folks claim they can cast. Also factor in wind direction and speed as well as line, rod, reel, weight of bait thrown, and just how aerodynamic it is. I have never measured this personally so I am not going to take a guess at it.
I fish 4 variations of the 50 sized platform. Anything from 3/16 to 3/4 oz works quite well. Never have found the need to have 200E instead of the 50 though I still have two 200e reels in the rotation. Plus the 50 series are slightly lighter and have more aftermarket upgrades should you need them. Also the resell value and demand for 50 series reels is slightly better in the event that you need to sell it.
Same reasoning why Rage tail plastics come in clam shells for majority of their products. They want the baits to remain 100% perfect when you go to rig them.
Casting distsnce, smoothness of retrieve, and the ease of brake adjustments make this reel a no brainer for the price. Only downside is weight and size if that matters.
