  1. Why bother with cheap junk? There are so many proven brands of quality reels out there that it isn't worth the hassle.
  2. I have a friend that pretty much uses a medium action spinning rod for every bait he owns. Alabama rigs, rapalas, jigs, topwaters, medium divers, etc. Does it work? Sure, but it isn't always ideal and he has a lot of fish come off.
  3. Bearings are different and the tolerances are tighter within the reel as well.
  4. Go with the Scorpion 1000xt. They are incredible reels and you can always swap gears to something faster. TT did a review of both and the Brenious did not fair that well. I have 2 Scorpioin 1000xt one that has the stock gears and one with the Brenious gears. They are fantastic. Also the stock bearings in the reel are quite good. Out of the box the Scorpion is a great reel that can do a lot of things well that I think you will enjoy.
  5. They are new. Here is a link with some in stock and ready to ship from a great business to buy from. If you are wanting the 6:5.1 ratio maybe call them and see if they could order it directly from Shimano. Or if you would rather call Shimano directly you could see what they would charge you for a gear set shipped. http://tackletrap.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=898_792_793 Under Shimano parts and then gear sets.
  6. If you need gear sets any from the Curado 200 E series or Chronarch 200 E series will work but are about $25 - 30 per set. If you are wanting it for resistance baits get the 5:0.1 for all around use the 6:5.1 or for something requiring higher IPT the 7:0.1.
  7. Yea, sounds like the builders fault. He either used the wrong reel seat on your build on accident, got it switched with another clients reel seat, or he had his notes wrong on what you told him. Contact him and see what he says. If you have something in writing you sent him noting what you wanted I would mention that too.
  8. 20# braid is pretty thin which will cause the line to dig in. I would try going up in size to 30-40#. Congrats on your new toy
  9. I had one a few years ago. I thought the retrieve was smooth but like you it never casted that great for distance even after a good cleaning. Don't get me wrong they are good well built reels for the money, but I never thought the reel was a distance caster.
  10. You won't find many rods built with them whether it be factory or custom. That is not to say they are good or bad as they could just be not as widely known.
  11. I am curious as to why he selected the reel seat and not you? Was is something you were not concerned about? Was their a fitment issue with some parts somewhere? A good deal on this seat? No experience with that particular seat but as long as it is comfortable for you to use and perhaps offers direct blank access it should be fine.
  12. On my 2500 series reels I like 8# Sniper and on my 1000 series reels 6# Tatsu is great.
  13. Good as in comfortable? IMO it is hard to beat the various Fuji seats.
  14. Prayers for you and your family ww2farmer. Sounds like he was an incredible and very influential person.
  15. Topwater is a broad category of surface lures. Could you be more specific about what you are asking about at least in terms of baits. There are walking baits like spooks, various popping baits, buzz baits, prop style baits, etc. I would try using topwater early in the morning or later in the evening if you aren't catching much on them in the heat. Most of the morning topwater bite here is done by 7:30 or so unless there is some cloud cover.
  16. This a great reel. In have two and they are capable and reliable for anything between 3/16 to 3/4 oz... Normal bass lure weights... You have a lot of upgrade options two from gears to spools and much more.
  17. The Metanium will be lighter and probably balance that rod out better. The Calais 200 DC is a heavier reel at 9.5 ounces. The Calais will also outcast that reel with heavier baits. If you are comfortable with the weight of the reel and the balance on your rod, buy the Calais.
  18. Disappointed in another split grip GLX...
  19. A good friend picked up a fully loaded 2006 Ranger Z20. It is incredibly smooth, stable, solid, and full of storage for the time it was made. It is an incredible boat that is well built and will last a long time.
  20. Thanks guys. Barring any bad weather the Curado/Custom and Core/Custom will get their first "go" this weekend.
  21. You probably need to have the guide replaced. I think it would alter the dynamics of the rod as well as casting distance. You will also probably notice a lot of line slap around the blank just above the foregrip as well. A friend was missing a guide on his rod. He was able to watch a few YouTube tutorials and do the replacement himself. Most of the time the rod manufacturer will send you a replacement guide. You would just need the epoxy and thread wrap.
  22. I have the Rhythm Wave swimbaits on the way as well. Jackall and Keitech are two of my favorite plastics companies. Going to give them a whirl.
  23. Don't encourage me. I am trying to downsize my arsenal some but that seems like a failing proposition. I have 14 casting and 7 spinning setups. I also have another 5 beater outfits. Add in the fact that I have 4 casting reels without rods you are not helping.
  24. Decent baits for the price. Nothing too fancy but they work pretty well. I use the Rojas Fighting Frog, Russ Lane Yo Daddy Craw, and the Swimming Mama. I have a few packs of some of their other baits too but not more than a pack or two. The Berkley Havoc baits are also a good "budget bait" as well.
  25. Anyone get their mitts on these baits. I have a few packs of each on the way for dropshotting and finesse presentations. If you used them or have a few packs on hand I would like to know what you think of these baits.
