if you want an all purpose rod i highly recommend a spinning rod. with a spinning rod you can toss light baits a lot easier then a baitcaster.
7' Medium action st croix premier can basically do it all. although, if you fish heavy cover and/or frogs i recommend stepping it up to the medium heavy
i don't think it really matters. i generally stick to colors to match the baitfish they feed on. by me the main forage is baby bass, perch, bluegills, and other panfish. i use a lot of baby bass colors
3-4" grub on a lead head. when it hits the water count to 1 and retrieve, next cast count to 2, the following cast 3, etc. use this technique until you find out how they want it. a slow steady retrieve works best for me.
i have not used them. but just recently bought the spro frog popper and it's awesome! i like using the popper frogs when the vegetation is spotty on the surface. they are also deadly in open water. my only complaint is the hooks are a bit small for my liking
spinnerbaits have always been hit or miss with me. i can't say i hate them but can't say i love them. i recommend buying a few 3/8oz and give em a shot. they do work well in windy conditions
depending on how much you retie 2-3' leader is going to probably be too short. you shouldn't have a problem using an albright knot to join your two lines. the albright is one of the smallest if not the smallest knot to join 2 lines together.
you said your dropshotting i think you're better off just going straight mono or fluoro. you don't need braid for that kind of fishing
A-Jay where are you from? I'm from long island, ny and we have had one of the hottest summers ever and we are currently experiencing that transition period right now. the past week we have had some of our coolest nights this summer (low to mid 60's with one night in the upper 50's). the weeds are still pretty bad and the scum is all over the surface still. my friend who fishes a lake with lots of pads has been noticing them turning yellow and brown which means they are starting to die off.
The summer/fall transition seems to happen everywhere. usually by the 2nd week of september the fishing begins to bounce back by me and we can catch em real good up until about the end of november depending on temps. last winter we fished all winter due to the exceptionally warm winter and lack of ice.
I've been using trilene XL mono since i started bass fishing. and when i fish heavily weeded areas i use power pro from 10-30lb test. I never tried flurocarbon because i have never had the need with the exception of flurocarbon leaders when saltwater fishing.
my friend tried flurocarbon on his spinning reel once and he did not like it at all and went back to mono.
