  1. Wait, so does that mean if you purchase it when they are 2 or younger, they never have to buy one again for Virginia? Or do you all require fishing licenses no matter the age and it cost $125 for 2 years?
  2. Thaks guys. I've decided to hold off now that I priced out the other stuff I'd need (~$200 for carpet. I think not). I am going to have to just save up until I can get a water-ready boat. I'm pretty sick of being shorebound, but patience is a virtue.
  3. Someone posted a link to an article that said exactly this. The larger bass get, the smaller the school and the school is made of similar sized fish, to the point that the very largest tend to be loners.
  4. It's directly above the map itself and on the right hand side, not the top right of the page. It says "update your location".
  5. Daiwa has a whole range of gear. From "meh" Walmart stuff to $600 custom made reels. I've always thought the same about Abu Garcia because my first baitcaster was one and it SUCKED. It was terrible to learn with. But now I see that most companies pretty much have gear for all budgets. Effective market strategy.
  6. Very nice looking work.
  7. HAHA I'll take his "bad" luck any day. You see the size of the fish in that picture?
  8. I'm looking for someone to perhaps go night fishing with after work or maybe even very early morning during the week. That someone would live in or around somewhere between, let's say Delavan and Racine if you want to night fish (I work in Racine) or closer to Delavan for morning fishing. Northern IL works too, I suppose (Harvard, South Beloit, Rockton etc). I work 1230 to 2030 most nights, but sometimes 1700 to 0100. I guess just shoot me a PM. Bonus: if you've got a boat, I'll pay for gas (unless it's close to payday, then I'll be close to broke lol).
  9. Hey guys, i am in the market for a first boat and I found one that seems like a spectacular deal: http://milwaukee.cra...3169043270.html The thing is, I don't have a trailer. I know a 14' jon boat would be easy to transport in the back of a pickup, but what about this (abe: as in, would this be considerably more heavy or too heavy to lift in and out of the bed)? Also, how much harder is it to fix/modify fiberglass (floors, casting decks etc.) as opposed to aluminum?
  10. Not a frog, but this weekend I watched a fish roll up on my pop'r and whack it with his tail.
  11. This raises another good question: does anyone suppose fish are smart enough to determine that they are being harmed by an outside agent as opposed to just a really strong natural worm that happens to have something sharp protruding from it (the understanding here is that we are "unnatural" to their environment, whereas a worm or baitfish is natural)? We know they send out a sort of signal that is detectable by other fish (in the same way they detect danger, yes?), so I wonder if they can send out different kind of signals. I guess this would be a good question for a biologist since it's getting into fish communication. That said, if there is only one type of distress signal, you'd think it wouldn't much matter as all the other fish would, in a sense, just say "well, sucks to be you. Natural Selection and all that". Sure, it would put them on alert, but research has shown fish to have relatively short memory. I could very well be way of the mark on all of this, so feel free to critique anything I just said.
  12. Some more knowledgeable members will surely chime in, but it really depends on what your "every day" use is. If you are flipping heavy cover every day, then you want some heavy duty braid, maybe 65#. If you are fishing clear open water every day, that same 65# would be over kill.
  13. Same here. I've got a spot where I can see them there, so I duck down when reeling in on shore, but once I've got one early on, that's it. But then again, I'm a terrible fisherman....so maybe that's why.
  14. I too just read something similar and that it helps if you minimize the time it takes to land the fish. But what fun is it to just rip a fish right in the boat?
  15. That is....unacceptable, IMO. Especially for a brand new boat!
  16. Glenn May has a video or two about it. Check Youtube or the site archives. Sub to his channel (Bassresource) while you're at it, he has some GREAT videos about a number of topics. Edit: here ya go: I would embed it, but I'm not sure if that is frowned upon or not... edit 2: whoa..it automatically embeds. awesome.
  17. If he gets in then I DEMAND to see Pete Rose in there as well. Who cares what he did as a manager, it's what he did as a player that makes him great.
  18. Thanks. MT2 is hooking me up with a sweet deal on a reel Friday when I get paid and I am pretty certain I will be getting a Berkely Lightning Rod since I can buy them locally at Walmart or Dicks.
  19. Hey, it gets you on the water, right? That's all that matters, IMO. Question though: how tough is the rubber on that? As in: do you have to be extra careful not to get it hooked for fear of puncturing it? Presumably they are fairly rugged.
  20. Hmm. I checked BassPro, Dicks, Cabelas and Gander. Dicks was the only one with a 7', but it was M. I'm looking for MH because I'll be getting into some weeds. Not just for the current lake (where I viually see some decent size fish cruising in and around the thick weed beds, milfoil I think), but the next potential lake is reportedly covered in muck, therefor no one apparently fishes it. I've yet to even look at it, but it is supposedly a once private sherriff owned trout fishery with good bass and pike fishing. I've all but relegated this rig here to be a heavy duty flippin stick.
  21. Those look to be VERY nice rods. MT2 gave me a killer deal so it will leave me money to most likely get one.
  22. Thanks for all the help guys. Especially MT2 for the great offer. This really is a great community. Glad I found it.
  23. Dang, the 7 footer is out of stock.
  24. Because technology advances. I had these rigs over ten years ago, probably purchased closer to 15 years ago. The first baitcaster I owned was the worst, but that was something like $25 for the combo. Now, I can get a $40 combo wherein the reel has some sort of braking system, something neither baitcast reel I owned had. The reels I have seen don't look that bad and appear to be of decent quality. This is why I asked and posted this thread: because I want to know what to look for other than price tag.
  25. Thanks Arv. That is pretty much exactly what I was looking for, but it didn't turn up in any search results (google or otherwise) that I ran.
