  1. I'm not sure if we will have access to a boat or not, but presumably we will fish from shore. He said some time in October, so whatever time of the season that would be and it will be up around Chippewa Falls in Northern WI. Why a 9' rod? If I were to buy a 9' rod, I would have no other use for it and it would be useless to me since I couldn't transport it in my car unless it was a 2 piece. Could I re-purpose some bass gear? My uncle said he just uses salmon eggs, but I'm game for lures too. Especially if it gives me an edge to outfish him lol.
  2. http://www.bassresou...g_articles.html then http://www.bassresou...fishing-videos/ If, after reading and watching what is contained in those links, you still have more specific questions, head over to the appropriate section of the forum and 1) see if someone has posted about it before or 2) make a thread asking a more specific question. Getting into bass fishing isn't all that different from regular fishing, IMO. It's when you fish strictly for bass and make bass fishing a hobby that it becomes more intensive.
  3. Also, since funds are tight, I would like whatever set up I have to get to be versatile and not have to get something that perhaps is specific to Salmon fishing. Also, let's stay away from "buy brand X" because most likely I WILL NOT be able to afford the brand that you suggest. I just need to know what action rod and what to look for in a reel. I am trying to find some websites to read about it, but again, all recommendations are to buy brand X rod and brand Y reel and don't yet indicate why. I know NOTHING about Salmon fishing....
  4. So my uncle has recently invited me to go Salmon fishing come October-ish. However, I have ZERO clue where to start as far as terminal tackle is concerned, let alone lures and such. I guess the basics would be line and rod action. I know a lot of people fly fish for Salmon, but I doubt we'll be doing that. Something tells me I need some hardcore gear for this.....
  5. The fishing department at the counter where you buy fishing licenses.
  6. Walmart usually has some good maps of local lakes, but they are relatively expensive. The ones at the local walmart indicate vegetation and even what fish are frequently caught in different spots on the lake, as well as depths, shoreline structure/cover and whether or not the shoreline is developed. Presumably, the local baitshops have them as well.
  7. My dad and uncles have always fished, but the fishing gene skipped my older brother and hit me. Fishing with my dad was always a time where I was "one of the guys", even at a young age. We'd take trips and there was a lot of "don't tell your mom" moments lol. We never did very well, so it was always more about the experience and just being out in nature or out on the water. The serenity of seeing the sun rise on the water and watching the fog burn off of water that was glass smooth. Or even in inclement weather, grinding it out in a gentle (or even not so gentle) rain shower. There is something serene about raindrops hitting the hood of your rain jacket. Whatever it was, I would dream about that next cast. The next cast was always sure to be the big one; the catch of a lifetime.
  8. How much does this typically cost per reel? Now that I have a good reel amd soon another, I'd like to get it done, but don't want to get ripped off.
  9. I hear this a lot but I have a question about it: how do you keep from picking up weeds on the treble hooks? I've tried it, but always get a straggler weed tip and it kills the action of the lure. Or is that because I have cheap cranks lol?
  10. I suppose I did forget to mention that you got them primed to bite up front and i cleaned up lol.
  11. Jeez, SMILE lmao. You're catching killer smallmouth and you look like it's torture.
  12. Pfft, ultra light? Real men bass fish the heaviest cover with ice fishing rods. 4# test is for wimps. 2# is where it's at. On a serious note, I spool my regular spinning rod with 6# mono, so it's pretty light I think.
  13. Indeed it is, thanks. It definitely helps to have a partner who really knows his stuff. It's one thing to get off the water then come here to critique or to game plan beforehand, but to have a knowledgeable fishing partner is infinitely more helpful. Especially if he has a boat lol.
  14. Got out this morning with BR member pappajoe222 (thanks to Bassresource) for a Labor Day morning of fishing on Delavan Lake in SE Wisconsin. The early bite was about all we had and the fog seemed to help, if not just to give us a bit more time before the pleasure boaters came out, which they did the minute the fog lifted. I got these two LMB and pappajoe got a got a good sized Pike but he didn't feel it picture worthy. I guess that happens once you're used to catching a lot of fish lol. The first is my current PB and the (don't laugh) the biggest fish I've ever caught, bass or otherwise.. We didn't get a weight, but it was ~18 inches. Fought like a champ as well. Both were caught on a pumpkin green (ish) 1/2oz (I think) jig of unknown make with some crazy looking trailer of the same color, part of that lot I posted about getting from my neighbor. Come to think of it regarding my thread "confidence in worm selection", these fish were eating stuff that was EXACTLY the same color as the thick weeds they were in. This, folks, is what fishing is made of. Fishing with a purpose and catching what you are fishing for. That might seem second nature to a lot of you, but for someone who always has had a passion for fishing, but has never been too successful and had a habit of never committing to a certain "style" that was suited to the environment, this has been a monumental summer.
  15. Can I ask why? I've only had braid for a little while and haven't been able to see if there is a difference by using KVD, but if it won't help braid any, I would be able to save it a bit by only putting it on one reel. That said, I did notice a dramatic positive effect on my baitcaster with mono. I got twice the distance with half the effort and it greatly reduced my overruns.
  16. Since Rockchalk has been posting his "scores" that he's gotten, I figure I'd post mine. My neighbor is an avid fisherman and has rummage sales every summer. I forgot it was this weekend, so when I went outside, I popped over to see what he had. He had a mat full of plastics and such, so I nosed through it. Since him and I are on good terms, he gave me a discount. The price he had listed only came to $6.75, but he let this all go for $5. 5 freakin bucks!!!! All those jigs are practically brand new! 3 or 4 have rattles. The plastics have seen better days as far as the packaging goes, but they are fine. The crankbait is old, but unopened.
  17. I am remiss to ascribe "spirituality" to anything at all, but the core of the idea, one of not having a clouded mind when performing a task and merely concentrating on what you are doing, is something I think we all do to a certain extent. Some people just ascribe that to something "spiritual", whatever that means. There is nothing metaphysical about it. If you concentrate on the task you are performing, you will do better than if you are thinking about other things. Simple as that. The opposite of what this "zen fishing" is, IMO, would be to just toss your bait anywhere and pay no attention to how you work it, if there are likely to be fish there or what presentation the fish want. It doesn't take meditation or "zen" to understand the biology and habits of fish. That said, if meditation or whatever works for you, fine. Just don't tell others that they are wrong or misguided if they don't buy into it. No one worldview is universal. Human beings are far too unique.
  18. I think there is a Sam's pizza everywhere. We have 2 where I grew up in IL, but the better one, the one that me, my dad and brother all delivered for and were rather close with the owners, was a tiny restaurant owned and ran by a father and daughter straight out of Sicily. They had ZERO employees except delivery drivers; those two made all the pizza and did everything even when Sam (the father) was in upwards of 80 years old. Best pizza I have ever had in my life. When I was young, I'd go in there with my dad and Josie (the daughter) would give me raw pizza dough because I love bread and dough for some strange reason. Sadly, they are closed now. The other is more of a chain type Sam's and their pizza sucked.
  19. My top 2: For take out: Mushroom and onion or, for frozen pizza: garlic chicken w/spinach with garlic sauce, not tomato. I don't like chain restaurant pizza (Pizza Hut, Dominos etc.), I like little Italian restaurants that have the pizza that has a lot of flour on the bottom of the crust. Around here that is Vesuvios and Genoa Pizza.
  20. You are. Is your CAPS LOCK key stuck?
  21. I'm broke as well and i have been contemplating an inflatable boat. Of course, I don't fish large bodies of water, so it should be fine for me. Amazon has a number of them for ~$100 and you are ready to go. Then, you could check out Craigslist and find a cheap trolling motor. I even saw a video where a guy modded his and put in a PVC frame for his wooden floor that he covered in carpet. Plus, you don't really need an actual boat launch.
  22. Wow. Phenomonal write up, islandbass.
  23. Did you put any KVD on it? I am not saying for sure that it would have helped, but theoretically it would have.
  24. Presumably these are beaches not frequented by swimmers?
  25. I would love to be able to stick with one place, but I don't yet have one solid spot to call my own. So far I have 3 places that are good (for me, in that I have actually caught fish): a crystal clear lake that is deep as all get out (old rock quarry), a dirty, fast moving river with some ok SMB, and a small, dirty and shallow lake that is only a few minutes away from home and is somewhere I can easily go after work. It looks like I need a consortum of jigs/lures.
