  1. I have this rod and use it all the time, no issues. Ive even pulled some 3#+ fish out of slop throwing a hollowbody frog across scum. I will say though I see alot of mix reviews on the W&M stuff. I just dont see how so many can love and so many can hate one brand so widely. I beleive its, either the QC department is letting alot of bad stuff slide or some people see Skeets name attached to it and expect a $90 rod to be as good as a $150-$200 rod. To me, it is what it is. A budget rod, but I also beleive its one of the nicest budget rods Ive owned and I'll let the rod show me in time if I need to invest in more or buy something else.
  2. We went, but nothing to report. One of those mornings, were very active and the boy forgot to go to the rest room and was afraid to do it behind a tree. I was hoping to catch some as today was the last day before I transition back to a weekend Dad as it's my last day with him for the summer. Have to just try it on the weekends now.
  3. I would suggest looking at the Berkley Amp's as well. For the money they arnt bad, Ive used the Amps, Lighting, and Shock series rod's and actually I liked the feel of the Amp over the other 2. Just picked up a spinning rod recently for my fiance ran me $30 bucks I think.
  4. I should be in bed right now but I dont sleep much these days. In about 6 hours Im taking my 6 year old to a farm pond that has alot of skinny 14" bass in it. Reason they are skinny is for another post I plan on making tomorrow after I get home with some pictures(I hope anyways). Im a little worried about one of these fish scaring my son and him dropping his rod they are diffently big enough to pull his rod in. So, do you think it would be just as fun for him if I basically just set the hook and handed over to him? Let him get a better feel for these fish before breaking out his Zebco 33. He has caught fish on senko's in the past but they was really short fish 6-8" and he was complaining they was to hard to reel.
  5. I tell you what I got a Quantum Energy e600PT, its rough looking, paint chipping, boat rash whole 9 yards, $15 tyd. PM if your interested.
  6. Ive seen and been on both sides of this coin. Even to the point of I know I should save and get something better, but the bottom line is I want it now. Id strongly suggest a Black Max Combo if buying from Wal Mart, but thats $70. Main thing Id look for is brass gears, you dont want plastic. Your drag is what will land that fish, and plastic can bust under intense pressure.
  7. I got a chance to get it out and use it. I have to say I like it, I threw a few diffrent baits on it. A spinnerbait, chatterbait, jig, popper, and fluke. Only thing I got bit on was the fluke and they was all dinks, did have one break off on the hookset. And I dont want to change this thread into something else but it appeared my uniknot gave on that one it felt like a solid fish to. I did just start tying this knot so it very well could of been my issue and nothing more.
  8. No joke, how many of us grew up eating hotdogs several times a week for lunch. Cut up hotdogs I bet is alot of peoples first memory of food. I also bet everyone of us has ate a uncooked one straight out of the fridge. Now days they say hotdogs is one of the most dangerous and unhealthy foods for kids, and to boot uncooked ones are said to cos all sorts of health issues.
  9. They will put your eye out have a buddy as a kid got a new combo for his b-day tied on a egg sinker and went to the back yard, stuck it in the grass....yank yank yank....POW....right in the eye. Luckly he didnt loose the eye but that eye is lazy, if you was to meet him the 2 things you'd notice off the bat is he's got unique sense of humor and what happened to his eye. As far as the lead poisoning goes, wouldnt worry bought it unless your pouring 8 hours a day worth of sinkers jigs and others.
  10. Id suggest tieing on your favorite frog and giving it a whirl. From the sound of things, your in the middle of you rod upgrade and a frog rod would be one of the last ones added. Im even ventureing to say you probably dont throw alot of frogs, due to the I have two of them and don't want to buy something just for frogs. When I first really started throwing frogs I used whatever. After 1 summer of that the first rod I bought this year came after looking at probably about every "frog" rod under $200. I ended up on settling on one more designed for a buzz toad than a hollow body but I'll have another frog rod or two in my arsenal in due time. Bottom line dont sweat it, try it.
  11. It arrived today, and keep in mind this is the first time I touched one. I ordered it on a blind risk, which I normally dont do, but Im not a big Kistler and G Loomis I know is out of my price range. The main other 2 rods my fishing buddys use. WOW, I swear I think the newspaper it was wrapped in weighted more than the rod let alone the BPS Pro Q I put on it. Its almost like your holding the reel and the rod's not there. Took it in the yard and was zinging a practice plug all over the yard. I cant get out tonight but luckly tomorrow evening Im headed out to start fishing a Lake Ive never been on in preparation to joining a USA Bassin event next season.
  12. Yea, there is no doubting this, in away it almost feels like the NCAA gets upset cos thats money they dont get. Wonder what would happen if some rich dudes, maybe someone like Donald Trump(USFL) or Vince McMahon(XFL). Elected to create a Amatuer Football League, took these kids before they enrolled into college and paid them. When they hit the right age, those kids then could enter the NFL Draft. For one, you be competeing vs the NCAA game more so than the NFL. Which depending on your market could be at least more do-able. Also, it could make the NCAA game in time back to a level of fair play and not so many dirty scams. I mean your not going to be able to do 30-40 AFL teams especially out of the gate. Probably 10-12, set large rosters maybe 60-75. And the kids who really see $$$ ala, totaly baised on reports Ive heard or read, Reggie Bush and Cam Newton. Can just skip the college game all together, play ball for 2, 3 heck 5 years at the AFL then go enter the NFL Draft.
  13. I feel bad for the CURRENT Penn St, coaches, staff and players. What did they do, and really they are the ones being punished. Granted the players can leave, but some wont, some cant. And what if you grew up dreaming of playing for Penn St. Anyone want to guess on what number coach they are on when they come off probation? Im not saying something shouldnt of been done, but time after time. The people who did wrong basically walk away with a slap on the wrist and the current roster and future recruits get hurt. Is there a way to fix it, probably not. Maybe install some type of rule for example of the Tressel situation if another school hires him he is suspended x amount of games. Really be no diffrent than when Ricky Williams returned to the Dolphins after his failed drug tests. Bottom line the NCAA really needs to look at itself, it's gotten to a point of no return in my opinion. I think stiff penaltys could be key to fixing issues. They all have to be the type where the top dogs at the U is keeping tighter tabs on players and coaches. Imagine if USC or OSU got similar penaltys to what PSU just received. Its going to cost more than the head coach's head. And the next guy should know if he allows something similar to occur its his head first. Look at IU basketball, I live just a couple hours from Bloomington, but Im a Louisville fan. First few years after the book was thrown at them, they was begging anyone who could dribble to walk on.
  14. You know Ive asked this question on every board Ive every belonged to. Alot of ideas have been mentioned to me to find a better way. Tried one guys suggestion and all I ended up doing was breaking a tip. I have to admit that this right here is the best sounding suggestion Ive heard to date. I'll be trying this one out for myself. And Im not kissing up either!!!
  15. Typically what I do is just back it all the way off, and then give add just a little. I wait till I catch a fish to adjust the final drag setting. Ive often felt there was a better way, but this is how I do it. How do you do it?
  16. I have a 6' 10" Quantum Tour Elite Tommy Biffle paired with a Quantum Energy e770. I also mostly fish from the bank and find the shorter rod works better for me. Ive thought about adding a Hack series rod but doubt I will honestly.
  17. I checked the tracking number today on a package, figured it be here tomorrow. The tracking # says its in the town over and has been sorted but nothing about out for delievery. I know that I could check it again in a hour and it would say out for delievery. But I just picked up the phone to see what they could tell me. Man was a that a was of my minutes. Lady picks up, I explain and tell her I have the label # here. Figuring it would help someone look. She says all delieverys are out for the day and if its been sorted it SHOULD be out with one. I asked her if she could just look and see if its been sent out and she said no. I rember a time when places like this was eager to help you out. I know the recession has costed alot of places cut backs. There is a post office here in my town and in the one over. Rumors are all over the place that my towns might shut down and everything just run out of the one. Maybe if its true she's on the cutting block. Heck, recently I was told you was no longer allowed to arrive at the PO before the deleivery guys are gone and pick up your own mail. On top of that our mail runs from anywhere between 12 to 4 depending on who's on our route on a given day. Id make a formual complaint but the one guy that does get my mail on a consitant time is also a old friend from my childhood, sandlot days. And on another note whats up with the DMV setting up the phones for automated service only!! Cant not get a live person to pick up, tried asking to speak to someone pressing 0 nothing. Nothing worse than having to go in there sit and wait hoping you brought enough $$$ with ya.
  18. Anyone use Ducket rods? I took a gamble and placed a order for one yesterday. The reviews look good, but I dont beleive you can always base a decision on customer reviews. I ordered the 6' 9 MH-C model DFMM69MH as I was in the market for a new spinnerbait/buzzbait rod. Might attempt to use it for squarebills, 3/8 poppers and sammys.
  19. I myself have taken the leap into Lew's. I settled for the introduction Speed Spool model SS1SH to be exact. I paid $79.99 each w/free shipping. Still $20 cheaper than ***. I feel like a kid in awaiting the arrival of a package from Grandma. They should be here by the weekend. Ive used Quantums Energys for years, but last year I started using Pro Q's, but got tired of driving a hour to the local BPS to get a new 7.1 and they be sold out. I know there was other options to get them, but come on. Who doesnt like a excuse just to drive to the store and make the ole lady suffer like she does you in the clothing or shoe stores? I have my eye on a guys Tournament Pro for $150, he says its basically nib, and I beleive him. We have made many deals in the past and Ive never been disappointed. Would of taken it over the 2, but I needed 2 reels. And was told the SS1SH is very similar to a BPS Pro Q. Dunno but going to find out.
  20. Do you have a BPS, Cabelas, Gander, or Dicks nearby? Id suggest if your just looking at a combo in that price range put it in your hands first. My local Wal Mart stepped up there combos this year, Black and Pro Max Abu's, Lew's which Ive been told is now headed up by the person that use to run the research and design for BPS, Pinnacle and others. I dont see a thing wrong with buying a using a budget combo. And it sounds like you might not fish as much as some of the guys that use higher end stuff. Will these reels have issues if used day in day out.....most likely. But if you just fish here and there and keep it maintaced it should last a long time. My Dad still using a Zebco Bill Dance baitcast combo, a whooping 3 ball bearings. However, he only gets on the water a handfull of times a year and some years not even that. The amount you fish should play just as much as a factor as price or anything else.
  21. If you want to buy new you can get a Powell Diesel rod for $69.99 @ *** and thats free shipping. Never used one but know a few who has and it lead them to dropping 2-3x the money on a more expensive model. There is no warranty on that rod, but by the time you figure costs a warranty would be all but null anyways. Reels, Id suggest a Abu Garcia Max, Black Max $50, Silver $60, Pro $80. I have 3 Black I use as emergency reels. Now your best best is to look used, check out ebay see if you cant find something like a Quantum e600 or e700 series reel, probably could get both for $75 or well under depending on which one and condition. I know I was about to list my e770(7.1:1) on there for $75 but changed my mind till I get another reel. Id also suggest looking on boards your familiar with for rods. Thats where you normaly find the best deals, I cant vouch for anyone here as Ive been here only 2 weeks but on another board there are several guys with good rods at a bargin price. Im sure there is deals to be had here to. I have also used the Strikeforce reel you mentioned it was several years back, I would only suggest it if you want a 7.1:1 ratio and want to buy new. Its a good reel, but I just think the Max series is the most reel for the buck.
  22. I have only used 2 types of flouro over the years. Vanish-Vicious-Vanish, thats how my cycle looks. Im thinking about attempting to go with a higher grade as I begin to gear up in hopes of starting to fish a lake in anticipation of fishing a USA Bassin series there in 2013. Price is important as Id like to keep it around what Im spending now but Im not against paying twice as much if I can REALLY tell a diffrence between it and Vanish. Here are some Im looking at(Any others wont fall on death ears) Bekley 100% Vicious Elite P-Line Halo Sunline Super FC Sniper Id prefer to go with one that offers a 15# test, but Im not against a 14#.
  23. Ive been saying Im gonig to learn to use a jig for years now. Recently I stopped talking and started walking, a few trips I didnt take nothing but a jig with me. The results are getting better and better lost a fish of a lifetime at the bank on a bone head move by me(fish's eyes looked like quarters and all I had to do was lip her but tried to flip her.) In all in the last few weeks Ive probably caught around 25 fish on a jig. Now for my question, Ive caught a few draggins and a few with a few subtle hops between pauses. But the majority of my bites are in rocks and I'll drag the jig till I feel a rock and then I'll pop pop real hard, hard enough that my rod sounds like momma swinging a switch. And when the fish hits its normally on the fall of the 2nd pop. Which I understand you'll catch most of your fish on the fall almost regardless of the bait being used. Which has me wondering if the hard pops are a very common way of working a jig? The guys I fish with that use em dont seem to pop em that hard. So is it something to do with the type of jig Im using arkys and footballs compaired to what they use finesse, hack's, poison tails and footballs. Or does it have more to do with the cover Im fishing. I took the Fiance to a local farm pond this past sunday(She smoked me on a stickworm), and didnt get a single bite at all popping it, the 2 bites I did get was on the intintial fall the main area I need to improve on indentifying a bite. I had one guy till me they are biting it on the fall most likely because they are suspended, but I saw on more than one video that the reason for the bite could be due to be putting them into reaction strike. Some might and on other boards have said to stop over thinking it. I beleive though the more I understand why this is working the more versatile it will make me in the long run. If there is more information needed from me or a clearity over something I said please let me know. Like I said Im tryin to learn the in's and out's of this and I'll be the first to admit my grammar and spelling are subpar.
  24. I think the other thing to keep in mind as one guys said is to really watch your line. 99.9% I fish a stickworm on a weightless t-rig and its probably the one plastic bait Ive found with a bite similar to a jig. If your not watching closely it is very easy for the fish to swallow it. Recently Ive used these baits for both my fiance and 6 year old son to try to give them a easy bait that lands fish. But after a few trips out with each Im rethinking this because of exactly whats happened to you. I guess its time to get them back on the old true tested bait that really got my intrest in bass fishing going as a teen. A 3 hook twist worm!
  25. Ive known about this site for a few years, bouncing off and on. Just, recently signed up for the forums and really started digging and looking for information that I felt I could use. In the short time Ive been here, Ive learned somethings about a local farm pond I fish. Due to the video with the Pond Boss. Even backed up my suggestion on taking fish out that are all about the same size, which is this pond is about 12-15". But also, showed me that I do need to take the 6 year old out there bluegill fishing to get a idea of whats there one guy tells me it has great bluegill fishing and another says you cant buy a bluegill out of there. Ive also enjoyed the Ike videos, and have picked up some tips that has boosted or added confidence to baits that Im still trying to get the full hang of. All of this in about a week, and I havent even really began to dig around!!! THANK YOU ALL!!!!!! J.
