I would suggest a 2/0 wide gap, light wire hook. Do make sure the drag is set so as its not locked down. A light wire hook,penetrates easier and you dont need to set the hook so hard, which will cause missed bites at times.
Ive used to add weight to hooks on swimbaits. And to crankbaits to get them alittle deeper. All though ive been using lead wire roll on cranks and jerkbaits. Its quicker with split shot and super glue on hooks.
#7 and # 9 are what i use. They will catch fish just i florida just fine. But do yourself a favor. And grab some Rapala Suspending Shadraps. Clown and shad have been my best producers. Also i switched out the hooks,to the KVD1X2X.
Yes you can use straight braid. I have 20lb on one rod for crank/spinner baits. Keep an eye on your line for digging in itself. Also adjust you drag accordingly. With a properly set drag you wont be bending hooks. Thumb pressure on the spool can be added if need be, until the fish slows down. Theres really no reason any reels drag should be locked down.
