  1. Less than $40. I would try the Zebco line of reels. A couple years ago I found an old Browning Silaflex rod for $4.50 and it needed was a skip and screw to hold a reel on it. For less than $10 I had a new rod. I teamed it up with a Zebco 404 reel and that particular year that combo was the only rod and reel I caught anything on.
  2. Starting Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve) I will be away from the net for several days so I would like to wish everyone here a very Merry Cristmas and a Happy, Safe, and Prosperous New Year. All the best to you and yours. Take care and stay safe.
  3. UPDATE: On Saturday Oct.18, 2014 a search team from the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office discovered a body. The body was found at an abandoned house on Old Lynchburg Rd. between Plank Rd. and Red Hill Rd. The body is believed to be Hanna Graham. The missing UVA student. The body has been sent to Richmond to the State Medical Examiner's Office. I missidentified her in my previous post. A suspect has been arrested. The suspect has also been indicted for similar crimes in Fairfax, VA. There are several other women in the central Virginia area who are still missing so I would like to ask that no matter where you are that should you find something that doesn't seem right for the area that you contact local law enforcement and report it. Thank you all in advance for whatever help you are able to give.
  4. Hello. I have something to ask of all the people who fish in Virginia. In Charlottesville, VA an 18 year old UVA student named Heather Graham has been missing for over a week. The suspect in her disappearance has been arrested in Texas. Today the Charlottesville Police let the public know that the suspect enjoyed fishing. What I would like to ask is when you are out to keep an extra sharp eye open for anything that is suspicious and notify law enforcement if you find something. I know it is a long shot but the more eyes that are looking the better the chance of bringing her home. If you need more information about the situation you may check www.nbc29.com. There is a reward being offered for any information that leads to her return. Thank you for your time and effort.
  5. Just out of curiosity has anyone heard of a Hurd Supercaster. It is a small rod with the reel built in.The rod portion is made of steel and they came in 4 ft. or 6 ft. My dad passed in 2002 and when over at brother's (he inherited the house) house I found this in the basement. I cleaned it up and it does work fairly well. In trying some research I found they were made in the 1940's era. I don't know if I will ever fish with it especially since there is no line on it but it would look good hanging on the wall. Sometimes I feel it is good to look back and realize how far we have come and all the advancements in gear, lures and techniques. Happy fishing everyone.

  6. The IGFA should also have to pay his attorney's fee if they lose the case.
  7. Hello I'm new to the gun forum part of BR but not to guns. I have been carrying a gun professionally for 30+ years (open and concealed). For concealed carry I have carried semi-auto pistols in the size range of the Colt Gov"t Model Series 70 MK IV and teh Beretta 92 series. The revolvers I have carried range from a 2 1/2" S&W model 66 up to a 6" Colt Python. I find it is relatively easy to carry a revolver with a barrel from 2" to 4". My nnormal off duty guns today seem to be a 3" S&W model 65-3 or a 4" Colt Python. The best advice I can give is no two people are the same, what works for one may not work for another. The secret to concealed carry is a combination. The gun, the method of carry, the proper holster, and the clothing all combine to make an effective carry system. I have a large tote of old holsters (duty and concealed carry) that I have used over the years and for me the OWB holsters work best. I love my Bianchi pancake style holster for my 4" Python and 4" S&W 686. With a light jacket or a 511 vest thes 4" revolvers conceal very well.
  8. Thanks for all your replies. I have learned quite abit just from this thread. I'll probably will try a baitcaster later on when the funds are more available. RoachDad: the trick about the thumb is something new to me, thanks for the tip.
  9. Thank you all for your responses. I am a federal employee and the Sequestration has severely limited my funds but when they come available again I'll look into the ones mentioned. It seems the Pro Qualifier or the Black or Silver Max may be in my line up in the next year. Thank you all again.
  10. I have been using closed face spincasting reels most of my life. About 25-30 years ago I tried a biatcast reel and had so many bird nests before I ever used it on the water that I gave it away. I was wondering if I should take the plunge again and try a bait cast reel? If so which reel under $100 would be the best for no bird nests (back lashes) with a 12-15 pound mono line or better braid? Most of my rods are the old pistol grip casting rods. There are some Zebco, Southbend, Shakespeare rods and a Browning SilaFlex rod ranging anywhere from 5-30+ years old. Does anone offer a class on how to cast with the bait cast reel? For the last 30 years I have been mostly concerned with the shooting sports since I carry a gun each day (police officer).
  11. Most of my gear is at least 5 years old. I find the older stuff still works. I find alot of old rods at yard and estate sales or consignment shops. In fact my best rod was bought at a consignment shop and dates prior to 1990. It is a pistol grip Browning SilaFlex I bought for less than $10.
  12. That's the one.
  13. A few days ago I saw a Chuck Norris poster on Face Book. Chuck Norris was setting in a lawn or deck chair overlooking a body of water. The caption said some to the effect, "Fishing leaves an option for failure. I go catching.". I think I'll adopt that as my motto, maybe I'll catch more. Ha, Ha, Ha.
  14. Merry Christmas to all and to all a Happy and Prosperous New Year!!!
  15. Welcome from central Virginia.
  16. Goose52, I seem to collect rods in the last couple of years. I have several of that type in my collection. I usually find them at yard or estate sales and consignment shops. Earlier this year I found a pistol grip Bowning Sila-Flex that needed the skip and screw for $4.50. The skip and screw cost me about $3.00 total (I ordered several to keep the shipping in line). So for less than $10.00 I have a top notch rod. I tried it against my Shakespear Ugly Stick and the Browning out performed the Shakespear handily. You don't necessarily need the most expensive rod or reel to have a good productive time.
  17. Welcome.
  18. Welcome.
  19. Welcome from Charlottesville.
  20. Non-boater here. I'll check finances and next months schedule to see if I can make it. Great idea. Maybe it could be made an annual event.
  21. Welcome from central Virginia.
  22. Welcome Josh.
  23. That's the good thing about Charlottesville. Almost everything in Virginia is only 2 or 3 hours away or less.
  24. I live in Charlottesville.
  25. I would like to say hello. I started fishing as a kid but since graduating high school (1978) I haven't had much time to fish. I am now trying to get back into it as much as I can. It is such a good stress release, just to get away from the everyday grind at work. Doctors should prescribe fishing for stress relief.
