  1. 3/8-1/2 oz or 1/4 oz for small presentations
  2. I agree. It looks like a lobster/craw hybrid
  3. Haha same here. That's why I threw the question out here. I'll try some stuff for like 10 casts, and others for hours with no luck...
  4. How long do you fish a lure before you switch to try something else? I don't mean going from slop along the bank to deep rocks. But given relatively consistent structure/cover, when would you bail and try something else? Could be a different color or a different technique entirely. Thanks.
  5. For stained/muddy water I start out with either something dark (black/blue, watermelon, etc.) or bright and flashy (chartreuse, fire tiger, etc.) and work my way from there. The less light penetration because of rain or clouds, the darker I tend to go. You can never go wrong with using natural colors that "match the hatch," in my opinion.
  6. Arkie or Alien in 3/8 or 1/2 oz would be my recommendation assuming you're not talking about swimming jigs
  7. Very nice. Thanks for the feedback yall.
  8. Hey guys, I'm looking for a spinning rod that will do a good job handling smaller crankbaits, square bills to medium divers. I don't want to spend more than $150 and would REALLY prefer to keep it closer to $100. I plan on fishing in it in pretty much all situations. I'll be using a cheap shakespear dimension spooled with 10# Yo Zuri ultra soft until I upgrade around Christmas. Thanks!
  9. Depending on how tall the weeds are I'll hold my rod tip up higher to keep the sq bill from acting like a bulldozer, picking up weeds and killing the action. It just takes a little trial and error. If I feel the wobble stop I'll give my rod a good rip to the side to get as much of the weeds/grass off, and continue my retrieve.
  10. You know its a good fish when you two hands to hold it by the lip! Awesome fish!
  11. x2 I've noticed the same issue with some worms if I leave them on. I always take them off the hook now unless I'm going right back out the next morning and I just feel to lazy to put in the effort. Always re-tie the next day too!
  12. This is the second time I've heard about the walmart prices on a Veritas. Man, I wish I could justify buying another set up right now..

    Hair Jigs

Awesome! Thanks for the feedback! My brother ties flies and said he would tie me some jigs for Christmas and didn't know if anyone fished hair jigs for bass. This should be plenty of info for him to go off of and for me to use them to catch fish
  14. from my experience, jigs in that situation, yes, traps on inactive fish, no
  15. x2, I think 3/8 and 1/2oz are good all around weights and comprise most of my jig collection. But I completely agree with bo. Fish them and find out. If you need to bump up the weight, send your 3/8oz jigs to me. I'll take them off your hands free of charge
  16. Like mentioned above, this is nearly impossible to answer. If you HAD to choose, go with the tried and true lures. Jigs, worms, crankbaits, spinners and proven top waters (spooks, buzzbaits, poppers, etc.). Also stick with basic colors: generally - green, brown, black, white, shad colors and mix some chartreuse in there. This is just my list that I've gathered from reading and my own fishing experience. As far as selecting from those, that IS impossible to answer IMO. So many times I've tried something that makes sense based on water clarity, structure, time of day, etc., and doesn't land anything. I'll work my way to trying something doesn't necessarily have a rhyme or reason to it, and WHAM, fish. Most of this will just come with experience, as I'm quickly discovering.
  17. Most of my set ups are about equal in price with a slight advantage to the rods. 100 - 200 on the rod and 100 - 150 on the reel. I personally feel like the rod is going to be more important in most cases, at least for most of the techniques I fish. I really like jigs and soft plastics, so sensitivity is very important. This also means spending a little bit more on line too IMO. The only set up that I feel like one could argue that you don't need as sensitive of a rod might be a cranking set up, but still, I like the sensitivity to feel the wobble/rattle on the retrieve, if it bumps into cover, is bouncing on the bottom, gets stuck on weeds, etc. Just my 2 cents.
  18. Texas rig a 5'' senko weightless on 8lb FC has been money when the bite is tough. Its my fail safe when nothing else works.
  19. I really don't know where these stories of it breaking come from. I've heard about them too from second hand sources, but nearly everyone I've ever talked to that has one has not had this issue. Not saying it doesn't happen, but it just doesn't seem like as big of an issue that it can sometimes be made out to be, from my experience. And even if it does break, abu rods have a 3 year warranty, so just keep the receipt and you should be fine in the chance that it does happen.
  20. I have a 7' and 6'9 MH/F Veritas and, like aumdb said, I can throw pretty much everything on them. I use my Mojo more for spinners and vibrating jigs, but I wouldnt think twice about tying one onto one of my Veritas'. If you already ordered it, I would stick with it and leave the Vendetta on the shelf.
  21. I got a 5.5:1 Citica that works great, but I wouldnt mind getting a second set up with a 6._:1 reel also. Go with whatever you like.

    Hair Jigs

Can any experienced hair jig fishermen give me the lowdown on these jigs and how to fish them? I've read some and watched a few videos but still feel like I'm missing a good deal of information. 1) Do you use a trailer? 2) How do you work a hair jig? Swim it, drag it, etc.? 3) I've gathered to use them in high pressure/stress situations (winter/summer), but are there other times you would use them? 4) Do you use all hair? Or a mix of silicone and hair? (I've seen both) 5) What type of head style do you use? Why? 6) What weights do you use? From what I've gathered, it is more of a "finesse" style jig so anything over 3/8's seems too much, but maybe not. 7) Finally, what set up do you fish it on? I realize thats a lot of information to ask but I would really appreciate the help. Also, if anyone has any good articles or videos I would appreciate those as well. Thanks!
  24. A 7' MH/F rod with a 6._:1 reel will let you "properly" fish just about everything aside from crank baits and some very light finesse style techniques. Even then, you can throw spinner baits, vibrating jigs, swim jigs, etc. instead of a crank, and they might honestly be a better all-around lure depending on who you talk to. I would go with the Revo S or another comparable reel and stick it on a 7-7'3 MH/F Veritas like Rock Chalk said. From there, you can get a M/M baitcaster or spinning combo for treble hooks, and a M/F-ish spinning combo for lighter presentations and you will have a solid base to go from. Then you can start getting special application set ups (deep diving cranks, flipping/pitching, etc.).
  25. Shimano Curado or Lews Tournament Speed Spool are both around 150 and are awesome reels in my opinion
