  1. A rod for those applications, I would look at something 6'6 - 7' M/F. If you're fishing from the bank a 7' might not be a bad idea for extra casting distance. The actual rod will depend on your budget.
  2. sounds like a good set up to me. Would nt be my choice for crank s but I would use it for everything else. The tournament pro is a sweet reel.
  3. Ultimately its up to you. You will be the one fishing with it. I think the SX and Mojo would be fine, but personally I would put more money into the rod.
  4. I've only held them. They have an interesting reel seat, though I don't know that I would dislike it. It felt light in my hand, but I am unsure of how it will balance with a reel since I never mounted one on it. They are definitely good looking IMO.
  5. Go ahead and give it a try. You might be pleasantly surprised.
  6. True, fish don't know how much you spend, but you do. I feel like this statement usually applies to situations where people feel like they NEED to spend 500 dollars on a rod and 400 on a reel to catch fish and enjoy the experience, which is obviously not true either. There are plenty of guys out there that can do damage with a Berkley Lightning Shock. Would a 1000 dollar combo enhance your experience, I'm sure most would say it would. But this is getting into the whole, "how much would you spend on a combo and why?" deal. As far as the Duckett rods, I've never actually fished one, but pick one up every time I'm at BPS and think about walking out with it. They have a good rep and, from what I hear, are one of the "best bang for your buck" pieces of equipment. I'm sure others will chime in that have actually used them, but if you are considering buying one, I wouldn't try and stop you.
  7. Wait till Black Friday sales and you'll be able to get some awesome deals. If I remember correctly, sales are usually 20% off. If you're good with mag brakes, personally I'd look at a Lews Speed Spool on a Duckett Magic, Fenwick Smallmouth or Shimano Crucial.
  8. senko's, texas rigs, jigs, squarebills and lipless crankbaits.
  9. There's some nice house brand stuff, but for the most part I'll find name brand stuff.
  10. I use mostly fluorocarbon leaders because I like to fish bottom contact presentations. It gives me better sensitivity and abrasion resistance over mono. I will, however, us mono leader when fishing a Crig if I want my lure to float better. I rarely use mono as a leader in other situations, but when I do it is usually for treble hooks on a fast action rod. For example, I like to fish top water walkers on a 6'8 mh/f rod that has braid on it, but if I am using a top water, I will tie on a mono leader to add some stretch. Whether it really actually makes that much of a difference, I'm not sure, but it makes me feel better.
  11. I'm sure there are others out there but I feel like my Phenix m1 7'2 h/xf does a good job 3/8 up to 3/4.
  12. These guys pretty much said it. Green, brown, black/blue. Swim jigs, you might add a shad and bluegill color.
  13. Don't feel like studying. Figured I'd finally post one of these. (Right to Left) Lews Tournament Pro/Powell Endurance 723CEF Lews Tournament/Phenix M1 7'2 H/XF Abu Garcia Revo S/Powell Max 683CEF Abu Garcia Revo STX/Powell Endurance 695CB Daiwa Tierra 2500/Daiwa Fuego 6'10 M/F Pflueger Supreme MGX/Shimano Compre (travel rod) 6'6 M/F Lews Tournament Pro by itself St. Croix Avid 7' MH/F on the way, in which case I'll probably rearrange my rods/reels
  14. Generally, yes. Don't think of multi stop as a necessity however.
  15. If you're fishing rocks, fluorocarbon is a good choice. A lot of scenarios, lures, etc. comes down to personal preference after some basic principles are taken into consideration. I would do some research into these different lines and make the decisions for yourself. I'm sure others will chime in on advantages and disadvantages.
  16. I like the pflueger spinning reels. I think the president would be a good choice. As you mentioned, the Abu Cardinal is another good choice.
  17. Not that the SX is a bad reel, I like the STX more. I really like dual braking on my reels.
  18. From what I understand, the 5:1 bb1 will allow a little intentional back-play which is supposed to help with "delaying" the hookset with treble hooks. The 6:1 nad 7:1 will not have this feature. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. As far as lipless cranks, I prefer a 6:1 ratio. I also use this for squarebills. Gear wise, I think youve picked out some solid pieces. Just a matter of preference as to how fast a reel and how strong a rod you want.
  19. I agree on the rod. What is reasonable for you price wise? Are you looking to do everything at once? Or save up and replace little by little? All this stuff will help us make better recommendations.
  20. Absolutely. I will say, make sure you have a moderate action on your cranking rod. Spinners/swim jigs, definitely. Jig/worm, I'll go straight braid a lot of the times, but I have the option of tying on a leader.
  21. For an all around spinning rig I'd look for a 6'6 - 7' m/f rod with a 2000 - 3000 sized spinning reel. If you like cranks, 8ish # mono might be something to consider. I like braid on my reels but mono will allow for more stretch with a fast action rod.
  22. Red Eye Shad has produced more for me, but there are times when the Rat L Trap will catch fish when the Red Eye Shad won't.
  23. drop a 50 series shimano on a dobyns 701 or 702c
  24. I feel like the actions of all the dobyns rods ive fished have been crisp. Obviously the higher up you go, the better quality, but even the tip on the savvy is nice imo. I found the veritas rods to be heavier and stiffer than rated from my experience. Still a good rod for the money, but I think youre definitely taking a step up regardless of which line you picked.
