  1. If I were to buy a quantum the smoke would be where my money would go. I've fished with the kvd reels and didn't care for them
  2. I also use it as leader material. Works fine for me
  3. I think it's really going to come down to the person holding it. As price increases you SHOULD experience a higher level of performance, but not everyone's hands are the same. The only way to really find out is to try them.
  4. Currently my Aldebaran bfs xg. My Core 51 should be here tomorrow.
  5. What rod are you guys planning on throwing this in?
  6. Shimano aldebaran bfsDobyns dx 742c 20# pp braid to a 12# p-line cxx Weightless bps stick o
  7. These "discussions" always entertain me.
  8. Well guys, I wound up getting the core. The scorpion will probably be in my short list in the future. I forgot how much I like the 50 size shimanos
  9. Caught this one off the bank. It put up a solid fight. I don't know how big it is, but it's big enough to take a picture of in my book.
  10. The Powell Endruance should be available at Fish ranger .com for 150 or so. The Max line is also a good choice IMO. Phenix makes a good offering with the M1 and Recon. The St. Croix Rage and Avid are built on the SCIII blank which makes for good sensitivity in my hands. The Fenwick Elite Tech and Aetos could be good options as well though I've never fished one. All of these recommendations are assuming you're wanting to stay in the $150-200 range. You can also keep an eye on the fleamarket here. Great deals on great gear pop up all the time.
  11. The savvy isn't dead feeling in my hands like some might report, but I think there are definitely better rods out there for the money. I wouldn't blink at getting one for moving baits, but for jigs and other bottom contact lures, I would look elsewhere.
  12. The initial applications you listed would be fine. I use my 703 for those minus the cranks, but I imagine I could handle them in a pinch. 1/2 oz jigs with a grub though might be a bit much, but I haven't tried them. Overall, I really like the rod. I use it a lot skipping senkos in my kayak.
  13. Sorry, I keep forgetting to mention, it is the bfs. The new reel would go on an assortment of rods so I want it to be able to handle any number of things. Mostly Dobyns rods, which I am not concerned with balancing well with any reel, or my Cumulus 71mhxf, so the light weight of the core is, again, desirable, but not an absolute must since the scorpion is already pretty light, and the fact I already have the aldebaran bfs.
  14. Thanks for the quick reply! I know it all comes down to personal preference, but at those prices do you think the core is worth it over scorpion? I already have an aldebaran so I'm not overly concerned with having a super light reel, though it is a desirable trait.
  15. As some of you know, I'm on the hunt for a new reel. I'm looking heavily at the core 51, but the scorpion 1001xt recently piqued my interest. However, the tt review has me a bit confused. It sounds like they like it more than the core/aldebaran but then compare it to the curado 51/50e? I've never heard someone say the curado is better than the core... I saw the question raised on another forum but didn't feel like I saw a solid explanation. Can anyone compare the core and the scorpion performance wise? Thanks.
  16. This will probably be my next reel now haha. I fish way more soft plastic type applications than hard baits and I really prefer a low profile for those. The more I'm reading about the Conquest though, the more I'm thinking that's going to be next on my list for mostly hardbaits.
  17. Thanks! I really like the Aldebaran, so I'm kind of leaning towards the Core 51. My biggest concern is its ability, or lack of ability, to handle crankbaits. I'm not throwing any DT22's or anything, but definitely squarebills and mid range divers, like Wiggle Warts. Do you think that's too much for the 51? If it is I may opt for the Met101.
  18. Plat?
  19. If you were buying 2 rods. I wouldn't get both the 745 and 735. Imo it's redundant. I'd look at the 744/784 and the 745 in the dx line, depending on how and where you like to fish. If you're just asking if those are two good jig rods, then yes, absolutely. The 702c might be good for 1/8 oz jigs with small trailers and light wire hooks, but definitely not for bigger jigs that will get a bigger trailer.
  20. What do you like about the metanium over the core?
  21. Thanks for all the replies yall. in all honesty the only way in getting a steez is if I find one used. My max is probably around 350, which puts the shimano reels in my sites given sales. I have handled the met before and it felt nice, just never put it on a rod to truly size it up. I throw shallow to medium diving cranks 100x more often than spinner baits, and even then, I'm probably throwing a swim jig before a spinner bait. I think the heaviest spinner baits I have ate 1/2oz too.
  22. Thanks! The more I'm looking at it I think I'm leaning towards the Core51. For the money I'm willing to spend I personally feel like the Chronarch is a bigger size than I'm looking for. I should probably bring my rods into BPS and mount the different reels on them and see how they feel to make the best decision. Unless the Metanium is THAT much better, I'm probably gonna look pretty hard at getting the Core.
  23. Just saw the TP 6:1 is a 28in/turn, just as the Core 51.
  24. I'm not positive. I think they had/have a TW special edition jerkbait model. I haven't really kept up with Powell since I sold all of mine a while ago.
  25. It would be OK for those. Not my ideal rod for jerkbait fishing, but it can handle them. I don't know that the 683 really excels at any application, IMO, but it can do just about anything you want it.
