  1. By odd coincidence I just picked up a new rod and reel for bass fly fishing yesterday and went with a 6wt as I generally do SMB. I'll probably end up picking up an 8wt for LMB later this year. But I do agree that spending crazy money on a reel is probably ill-advised since as flyfisher said it's basically there to store line.
  2. Ditto, couldn't have said it better myself.
  3. Bought a couple of Rapala cranks (they had a decent sale at my local outfitter so what the heck...and got a free t-shirt) and a new St. Croix fly rod and reel for trout and bass, a few bass flies. Only went to look...
  4. We probably traded dock fishing for fishing heavy vegetation. An improvement? Who knows, but I will be ordering the season pass again.
  5. Fly fish for bass. Fish more.
  6. Excellent stuff...but it's Hank Parker, what else could you expect?
  7. Some of the first lures I ever fished with back in my teen years were Mepps inline spinners...whether it was the Black Fury or an Aglia. Still catch smallmouth bass with them today.
  8. The funny thing is when the A-rig rose to prominence after Paul Elias won that tourney all we heard were doomsday predictions: Anyone using an A-rig would automatically win a tourney, A-rigs were so powerful that they would literally deplete lakes of bass, A-rigs would win Barack Obama a second term. And? Well since Elias won we've learned that A-rigs are effective in certain situations. A limited tool useful in limited circumstances. Both the FLW and PAA results have generally shown that. Personally I'll never use an A-rig -- mostly because the standard rig is illegal where I live and because I don't fish tournaments, but also because I just have a personal aversion to them. Just doesn't seem right. But if the PAA wants to ban them, then ban them. Pro anglers caught fish before the A-rig and they'll catch them afterwards as well.
  9. Went to an outfitter and bought some soft plastics and a spinnerbait box. That should have been enough but I went to the annual sportsman's show later today (well, Friday) and bought some spinnerbaits and some odd jig heads the guy at the booth called "jig flies". Never seen them before so I figured I'd buy a couple and see how they pan out this summer. Web site for those jig flies is here if anyone is curious. Didn't need any of it...sigh. Oh, and joined our new local chapter of BASS complete with tourneys. Can't wait to finally tournament fish!
  10. I swear I only went to Canadian Tire to buy something for the house and then I walked by the fishing department. I escaped only buying some swim baits that bass and pickerel absolutely devour.
  11. Congrats on your victory!
  12. Most of us wouldn't do it on purpose...
  13. My boy Shin Fukae has been a bit snake bit of late but he pulled out a victory at a PAA event on Douglas Lake in Tennessee this weekend, beating both FLW and BASS competitors. Nicely done Shin!
  14. If someone asks me what I'm using I'll tell them exactly...hell, if they want to know where in the aisle I found it I'll tell them that too if I can remember. Spots are another matter...If I think you're an idiot I'll probably give you a general location. If you seem okay I'll be reasonably specific.
  15. On the water: Never For some reason when I'm at home and just moving tackle around I sometimes manage to stick myself. Fortunately never deeply.
  16. I would love to know how he came to that conclusion. There are days when I absolutely smash the smallies with a 6" Senko. I'm pretty sure I'd do even better with a 5". At any rate, to the original question: I really doubt there are many lures that you can't use on both LMB and SMB...at least I haven't found any to date and there isn't much I haven't thrown over the years. As those earlier have said, it has more to do with presentation and habitat. That I'm glad to hear since I bought a pile last month :-)
  17. Old I suppose would be jigs. For some reason I don't think that I actually threw any last year which is odd considering that I really enjoy using them. New...probably frogs. Only throw them once last year. So not really new but mostly. That and the million lures I bought between November and today.
  18. I don't think I've ever changed a hook in two and a half decades of fishing. On any lure I've never had a hook break (outside of one hung up on a rock and I gave her good) and never attributed one to a failed hook set. Not saying that putting better hooks on a lure isn't worthwhile for some, but I've never felt the need.
  19. I use it on occasion when checking lakes or areas I haven't explored yet but I don't think I'm making as much use of it, and its full capabilities, as I could be. I do know that I can't seem to zoom in on many of my area lakes to the degree as the above images of your lakes are.
  20. There's more than a few people who should have died several times over and continue to draw breath on that show :-)
  21. I never got that. It was only up until recently -- in my opinion anyway -- that we actually started to get to know some of the characters. A lot of the episodes seem to spin their wheels when it comes to actually exploring the characters, amazing considering we had a dozen episodes at the farm where nothing happened and we didn't -- again, in my opinion -- really get to know many of the characters. Just my opinion, worth what you paid for it.
  22. Ditto. All I know is I catch fish with GYCB Senkos. I'm not saying that the others don't but if something is working I tend to leave well enough alone.
  23. As much as I don't want to agree with you but yeah. The only BPS in Ontario, Canada is the one just outside of Toronto in Vaughn. You figure in the metropolitan area it's located in there are at least four million people, which is probably just under half the population for the entire province. We may per capita hunt and fish far more up north but you aren't potentially drawing upon millions of people...and every time I drive by the Vaughn BPS the parking lot is full -- summer or winter. Ah well.
  24. I almost gave up on the show last season after that slog on the farm -- every episode began and ended the same and it continued for nearly an entire season. That said, this season is a bit better. I must admit to being surprised what happened in last night's (March 24) episode. Then again, given the dynamics I suppose there was no other option for that character.
