  1. Stopped by Bass Pro after work and picked up two of their home brand poppers for 1.99 a piece. One was the typical shad and the other looked like a baby bass. Both had blood markings around the gills. Looked fairly life like. Only draw back was they didn't have the feathered trailer on the rear hook. I figure I have Fly tying stuff So I can improvise. Anyone ever use these with success? Thanks
  2. I dont call myself a pro by no means but I can tell a slight difference when using one my bass pro rods over my ugly stick even though the ugly stick cost more. I have a 6'6" MH ugly stick and I cant seem to get any distance on a cast with it. I have to run a 1/2 oz weight on my plastics to get the distance I want. Kinds defeats the purpose with wacky rigging. I am using the Bass Pro Tourney LTD and with a 4" Senko, I can launch it just as far as I can with my cranks. One of my reasons for using the ugly stick is the durability and cost of course but more for the fact that Dad love em. Swore by em and my first rod was as ugly stick. Kinda one of the few things I have to remember him by.
  3. Not a fishing story but a night hunting story. I was running late trying to get to my stand. It was about 1/2 hour till the sun started peaking. I had a bunch of gear and was moving quickly. I took a step and something started thrashing. I lost my balance couldn't see squat and fell over backwards on to about 7 more animals thrashing around. Then I got hit so hard from behind I ended up drawing my side arm. Dazed and scared I got my composer and split. Finally got to my stand and started smelling crap. Had turkey crap all over me along with turkey feathers everywhere and a nice rip in my jacket. I got owned by a turkey. I ended up taking the largest muley I have ever taken that day. Walked right up to my stand at 20 feet down wind from me. Never even smelled me. Dad always said from now on smear turkey crap all over before you get to the stand.
  4. So how was everyones take on the draft? Myself, I was dissapointed. I think Thomas Robinson should have been a #2 pick or 3 at worst. Letting him drop to 5 was a mistake. The guy is a power house who can play and was taught by Danny Manning. Kid-Gilcrest doesn't deserve a #2 spot at all. More like a low 2nd round pick. His D game is killer but he cant shoot and struggled all year offensively. Glad to see P Jones III go to OKC Thunder. He will fit nicely with Perkins and Collision. I have a feeling now since they went with a big, Ibaka is gone for next season. I would rather see Westbrook part than Ibaka but no way OKC can afford what it will take to keep him and Harden
  5. I agree with the Majority here, try a soft plastic. Texas rig it and see if you can use it top water. I am having the same issues here in Central OK. Its hot, 104 and no wind. Bass wont hit squat below the surface. I have been throwing a T-rigged worm and using top water poppers. I have been doing really good on both but a bit better on a popper. I kinda wait around between 630 am and 9am when the bass are pushing the bait fish closer to shore with some good success. BTW kinda off subject, that is some dang pretty county there
  6. Will the 4" have enough weight with a MH?
  7. I had actually looked that over. I couldn't pass up the deal on the BP PQ reel in the classifieds here though.
  8. I just commited to buy a I just committed to buy a Pro Qualifier here on the forums for a killer price so I got that out of the way. This rod looks nice http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Graphite-Series-Trigger-Rods/product/1204170505167/460627 I read the reviews on the 2011 model and read on the net that not much other than the color pattern has changed for the 2012 model.
  9. Hey guys, I will apologize first off if this has been covered, but I have been searching and read just about every thread in the Senko FAQ's and cant find the right answer. I am wanting to get a combo specifically set up for running Senko's. Preferably 5". I am a big fan of the Ugly stick and have been looking at the Lightning rod as well. I am going to more than likely stick with wacky rigging. I need a good baitcasting set up that will be able to really zing it out there. I need to stick with the 100-150 dollar range as this will be a dedicated set up and I don't want to go over board with it. I am partial to bass pro, but have access to a Gander and Cabelas as well. Thanks
  10. Got off work at 8 this morning. 93 degrees sunny, not a cloud in the sky and no wind. I wanted to try running some new jigs on the dock area today. 15 minutes into that with no luck, the bait fish were going bonkers all over the place. Grabbed my top water rig and let loose. I was using a brand new Popper in silverish. It was a feeding frenzy man. I swear I could have thrown a bare hook and caught fish. Unfortunately no large mouth. Lake Hefner in OKC has a hybrid bass alot like a striper/wiper. They are mean to the bone. I ended up stopping count at 45 fish. Most were 12-13 inches but I did keep 9 that were 20 plus. The biggest one measured 26 3/4". When that sucker hit the popper it sounded like a 22lr going off. The bait fish were being pushed up north to the dam and I followed. I ended up quitting at noon as it was 101 and I was worn out. My thumbs are all chewed up, my popper needs new hooks and the paint is shot. I tried a few different plastic baits and some cranks but not a single bite. Top water was king. At one point it was so crazy they were hitting my line about 10 feet up from the popper. Man it was a great day. Fish all cleaned and in the freezer. I have been up for 36 hours and the caffeine has wore off. I am going to hit it again tomorrow.
  11. One day two priests decide to go fishing. They decide to take a new priest in training along with them. They all load into the boat and head out on the water. 15 minutes into fishing the 1st priest says "I sure am hungry. I think I will go to the car and grab a sandwich". The first priest gets out of the boat, walks across the water, goes to the car and returns. The priest in training can't believe what he just witnessed. He says to himself "he must have such a strong faith in God he can walk across water" About 20 minutes later the 2nd priest says "I sure am thirsty. I think I will go to the car and grab some drinks". The 2nd priest goes gets out of the boat, walks across the water, goes to the car and returns walking across the water. By this time the priest in training is blown away by this. Once again saying to himself "wow, his faith must be great in the lord to walk across the water". So he gets an idear to get a sandwich and test his faith. The priest in training steps out of the boat onto the water.......falls in and drowns. The 1st priest just sit there and looks baffeld. Turns and says the 2nd priest "think we shoulda told him where the rocks were?"
  12. I kinda figured that. I have been spooling with no leader for years. I have always been scared to tie two lines together until this year. I had a break in my line due to a snafu with a pocket knife beer and a backlash. I tied my remaining line on the spool like a leader. I landed two wiper appox 12-13 pounds a piece the entire time the knot was exposed with no issues.
  13. I have been reading alot on fluorocarbon lines and want to give it a shot. What seems to be the best or most common way to use this. Bite the bullet and spool an entire reel or use it as a leader or go half and half with mono? Sorry for the newbie question but never strayed away from Berkley Trilene XL or Armor Coated mono.
  14. Oklahoma well central Oklahoma doesnt have the biggest bass around. 14 is a monster here. Hell anything over 5 pounds your sportin a chubby
  15. I love stuff like this. Just did my survey tonight. Another sticker for the future boat
  16. My son and I were fishing from the shore without a net so it was tuff. My son likes to reel the fish in when I catch them. He seen me struggling and when I offered to let him, he shook his head and ran to the truck.
  17. Thanks a lot! Loads faster too
  18. I can access the site, browse and more, but cannot post. Any idear why?
  19. I think I got it. I tried the 1/2 oz weights with some 10" plastics. While Im not getting the happy gilmore drive I am with my 6 foot medium rods, its pretty good. I think I will stick to using this around brush where a long cast is not needed. Thanks for all the help
  20. I have two. Deep running chartruse Bomber or a chartruse beetle spin. No matter what other baits I am running, when the fish wont bite, I fall back on the two old faithfuls
  21. Never doubt the ponds in housing developments. We used to released every fish we caught at lake wilson back into our pond for the kids
  22. Thanks for all the help. I took the reel apart and oiled it real good. Seems to be a bit smoother. I bought some 1/2 and 3/8 oz weights and some Yum heavy pumkin seed critters at bass pro this afternoon. I will hit the lake before I leave town tomorrow and see if that works some. Again thanks for all the help so far. I know the reel is not premo, but the reel was given to me by my father before he went to hospice and the rod was his all time favorite when I was a kid. It wont be my go to rig, but more just to use to remember dad.
  23. I can understand. I moved to the Edmond area for a job in Law Enforcement about 4 months ago and have not had much luck. I have hit Guthrie pretty hard. Mainly fishing the north east end of the d**n with a med crank. I have caught a few nothing over 16". Not a bite after 9am though. If there is any wind at all, the day is busted. No boat either
  24. I really havent had much luck around central oklahoma. Ive been told I need to hit lake Eufala and Murry Lake. I live in Edmond, near OKC so those two are a bit of a drive. I have hit the following with not much luck. Lake Hephner Guthrie Lake Thunderbird Lake Liberty Lake Of those 4, the dams on a non windy day seem to be the only place I have had any luck at all. Never anything over 16 inches. Only thing I can get any hits on are crawfish or chartruse colored med bombers. Anybody have any other suggestions on bass fishing around central Oklahoma? No boat yet, gotta pay for a wedding first. Thanks
