  1. Bass are attracted to your bait by it 's motion not because the bait has salt or not. Salt serves two main purposes, it adds weight to the bait but only if it 's incorporated into the bait like in soft plastic baits, salt on the outside is good for nothing; and to add a little bit of salty taste when the fish mouths the bait, which can give you a few tenths of a second more of the fish holding the bait in it 's mouth, those tenths of a second may mean the difference between a hooking a fish and hooking nothing, but I 'm not going to put my hands into the fire assuring so. Is it absolutely necessary ? I don 't think so.
  2. Just an advice, don 't get over confident with the beast, treat her like you would treat a trained lion, she 's just waiting for you to do something stoopid and wham ! she 'll bite you. Even the most seasoned anglers get professional overruns every now and then, I 've been fishing with baitcasters since 1983 and even though backlashes for me are rare once in a while I do get one, mine are phenomenal !
  3. Let him be.........I 'm not the one that after 10,000 casts hasn 't caught a fish on a spinnerbait.
  4. Go to the home section of Bassresource and then start scrolling on, READ all the articles Glenn has painstaikingly gathered by numerous authors on spinnerbaits, then read them again, after that leave all your tackle at home and take only spinnerbaits with you and begin practicing what you just read..........and after a couple of months come back and as us again if we catch fish with spinnerbaits. There 's absolutely no point in us giving you information on spinnerbait fishing if we 're not speaking the same language, language that you will learn by reading those articles.
  5. Kinda surprised about the water temp responses. That 's because you are a mammalian with a relatively constant body temperature thoughout not only the day but through your entire life, it 's cold oustide, no problem your body temperature will remain the same you just burn fat and begin to shiver to warm up; it 's hot outside no problem either, you sweat and your body temperature will remain the same. For us it 's easy, for them it is not, their body temperature and consequently their methabolism depends on the temperature of their surroundings. Water temperature is a critical point, that will tell you if you can expect the fish to be active or not to start with. In order to be consistent you need to know your prey.
  6. Well Bobo if : some us get up and put our pants on, some get drink a cup of coffee, some use the bathroom is what you meant when you asked the first thing I do when I get at the lake and steping out of the vehicle I just stand there and take a good look at the whole scenario......... most of the guys will understand what I mean.
  7. The more you dig into it the more complicates it becomes, in a multifactorial situation where several elements interact with each other and when one affects with the others you really can 't say THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT. But since we were only given the choice of selecting one........ :
  8. I start with the water temperature.
  9. By all means get an outboard ! waves can get pretty high and hairy in a 1000 acre impoundment.
  10. No the beads are not necessary but they are useful, the bead is used to create sound ( that why it must be preferably made from glass ), when the sinker hammers the bead it creates a clacking sound, it 's like adding rattles to a jig.
  11. Like I said before: The problem is ............being there when she does something stoopid.
  12. I don 't see any reason why it can 't be caught again, the difficult part is ............ being there at the moment she does something stoopid. :-/
  13. Hey Glenn, why on earth you are monitoring the forum in a Sunday morning ? you 're supposed to be fishing like the rest of the gang. Me ? oh well, I 'm grounded today, the commander in chief said that the patio walls needed paint...... >
  14. Exactly, if not certified by IGFA it 's not a world record.
  15. Forget about them Kaliforny lakes ! here in Mexico where we put our money where we say the goverment of Tamaulipas offers 1 million dollars in cash tax free for anyone that catches the WR in the lakes of the state.
  16. Well if a WR is ever caught in Mexico you can be shure of one thing, it 's going to be presented to the certified scale pretty much DEAD, refigerated and stiff as a rock, the closest certified scale is not 100 yards away, 100 miles sound just about right. Don 't know if in EL Salto or Bacurato there 's IGFA certified scale, I do know that there 's one in Mazatlán ........too far to take the fish alive. According to what Weakley said, he just wanted to get the fish back in the water as soon as possible. As soon as he realized that he couldnt get away with foul hooking the fish, he just wanted to make sure it lives. Put yourself into the position of a trophy hunter, specifically a WR trophy hunter, don 't you think that if you are in pursue of it you know the IGFA rule book as well as you know the palm of your hand ? foul hooking a fish if done unintentionally does not disqualify the catch, I 'm no record hunter and I know that. He knew that we wasn 't going to get away because there were witnesses and even a video of the catch. I would want the scale he used to be tested to see if ii was accurate. Yes sir indeed, 25.1 doesn 't necessarily mean it is really 25.1 until your scale is proven accurate. Let me guess, the bass would have been placed on it's side to be weighed, correct? All that weight could have killed her right then and there No sir it wouldn 't, I 've worked at the fish hatcheries here in Mexico and handled bigger fish of many species and it never happened anything to them.
  17. Maybe because under CA law the possesion of the fish is illegal if it is not caught by the mouth ?
  18. I understand Graham, the fish was not intentionally foul hooked, so from that point the fish could qualify but the fish was caught in a California lake and under California law you cannot keep a foul hooked fish, it doesn 't matter if it was intentional or unintentional, the law is clear, you should obey the law. Being honest and honorable is to do the right thing even when nobody 's watching.
  19. Vermonster, the fact is that unless it 's weighted in a certified scale the fish is not 25 pounds. The fish is behemoth ? oh sir yes it is, there 's no doubt of that; would it qualify for the world record ? I don 't think it will. Now, what would you have done in case you caught it ? Me ? I would take the fish to a certified scale, have it measured, weighted, photographed and the do the right thing, return it to the water let everybody know that the fish was foul hooked and not apply for the world record.
  20. Let me say this........ This is a very believable story. These guys are well known around the area as hard core fisherman, and do hold some of their own records. Let me remember something.........about a year or year and a half ago a guy claimed to have caught the mother lord of all basses in one of those California lakes that surround San Diego, he took pictures of the fish, applied for the record and later his claim was dismissed, not enougn information, something "fishy" with the way the fish looked in the pictures, something "fishy" about the witnesses, etc, etc, etc., was this guy some sort of something that you could qualify as a cheater ? actually, if you consider the fact that the guy is the holder of several IGFA line class WRs you could barely qualify the guy as a cheater and later it turns out to be that the IGFA found out that the guy actually cheated by adding weight to the fish. So as you can see: Caesar 's wife not only has to be honest, she must look like she 's honest too. Someone looking after the holly grail of bass fishing I very aware of all the gray areas that the book has like Velascus just pointed out: in the book it says that a world record fish will be disqualified if it is INTENTIONALLY foul hooked. Man if I 'm out there fishing and hook what seems to be the holly grail you can bet that I 'm going to read the book.
  21. Now that gives the expression "shore lunch" a completely different meaning.
  22. I predict that I will catch at least 1 10 pounder this year, already got a 7.72 pounder in the pocket. It 's the right time of the year to ketch me a big momma.
  23. I don 't care who you are, now that 's funny !
  24. Excellent responses from everybody, you all deserve a good behaviour star. I specially liked this one from Alandis: When I am throwing a lure, I want to make sure it looks like something vulnerable
  25. Say you are fishing a body of water that doesn't have craws in it, for example. Should you even try to tie on a lure that is imitating a craw? I don 't see nightcrawlers and earthworms crawling along the bottom of any lake.....yet we fish with plastic WORMS don 't we ? It 's the action of the bait what attracts the attention of the fish. What do worms mimic, worms ? crawfish ? darters ?.
